If you want a really authentic xiao long bao, I can highly recommend going to Yu Yuan Garden in Shanghai and have xiao long bao in the restaurant by the water overlooking the bridge with many turns, and most definitely go to the traditional side of the restaurant as it’s the most authentic experience. It also happens to be the birth place of Shanghainese style xiao long bao, and they’re absolutely amazing! The other side of the restaurant is a bit more high end with normal chairs instead of Asian style wooden stools, but the more high end side is also more touristy, locals go to the traditional side more. Best dumplings I’ve ever had! I only went to the traditional side the two times I’ve been to that restaurant, but just OMG! Both the dumplings and the view is just out of this world amazing!

I had tried xiao long bao in both DinTaiFung and NanXiang store (which is another famous store from Shanghai ). I think the DinTaiFung has the edge over NanXiang since it has a milder and more delicate flavour, I think NanXiang could sometimes a bit too greasy. One of the reasons why the most foreigner would prefer DinTaiFung.

Din Tai Fung is my absolute favourite, when I had to go gluten free it killed me. I would take all my visitors to Hong Nong here on the first night. So delicious! Also I love Joel’s British lad, Joel speaks, Sarah questions for a minute of what he just said was English!

만두에 생강이 들어가면 풍미가 더 좋다는 것을 사라가 그 맛을 아는군요. 2~30년 전만 해도 생강이 든 중국집 통만두(싸오롱바오=대나무통))가 동네마다 흔했는데, 요즘은 찾기 힘드네요. 70%넘는 다크 초코릿은 마크에 가면 제빵 재료로도 팔고, 편의점 가도 팔지요.

설날에 집에서 흔히 만들어 먹는 만두를 소에 돼지 비계를 좀 갈아 넣고 만두피에 전분을 많이 넣고 얇게 빚여서 찌면 싸오롱바오가 된다는 거, 밀가루 피는 육즙을 다 빨아 먹어서, 전분가루로 피를 만듬. 그런데 만두 소가 건강에는 그다지 좋을 거 같지 않네요.
