You're right. It is so spot on. Every time I used to try and leave, she'd have a panic attack and struggle to breathe, which would force me to stay to make sure she was okay. Getting to the point where you can walk away is so, so difficult.

Especially if you've lost friends over it. His trust issues are his. You need to tell him to either get help or to leave because that is no way to live the one life you have on this earth.
