Join us for part 2 of our journey welcoming our daughter home. We had part 1 last week telling the story of the birth and, today we share the story of our NICU experience.
Our daughter was born at 34 weeks which required us a trip to the NICU at the local hospital.
Since we normally have home births this was a very new experience for us.

What a nightmare. I’m so glad your sweet girl is ok. My daughter is an ICU nurse and I tell you the medical field is broken like the schools and l’m so concerned for parents these days.

Thanks, Ronda. I agree... I can't think of any mainstream industry that isn't broken these days. 😥 It takes a lot of effort to avoid them all, and sometimes it isn't possible to do so... but when we are able to choose a different route, it is so worth it!

Congratulations on the new baby! Your story is crazy. I just don’t know why they didn’t listen to you. It makes me wonder how they treat first time parents. You guys are absolutely amazing!

Thank you so much, Judy! YES - this is something I have spent a lot of time thinking about... I can't imagine how many first-time parents have no clue how bad some of the decisions are that are being made for their babies! It makes me so sad. Those first few weeks are so important for mom and baby - and the nicu can easily ruin not just that time, but the foundation that carries on into future weeks, months, and even years.

❤️❤️❤️ Thankful for a God that gives us more strength than we can muster up on our own. Without Him, this could have easily turned into a very ugly situation. 😬

Thanks for sharing your story! I got in trouble for sleeping while nursing my baby in the hospital too. For the next one we switched to a birth center with a midwife, and got to head home 2 hours after the birth. So much better! (Home birth wasn't an option because we were rural. So we drove 90 minutes to the birth center instead! It was pretty close to the hospital, just in case.) I'm glad you and the baby are doing ok!

That policy is so wrong! Not being able to sleep with her really gave me a new perspective on things. I've never had any postpartum depression symptoms at all, and it makes me wonder if the way our society "does babies" might be a key player in bringing that on. 😢 I'm happy you were able to find an alternative option that worked well for you. A 90-minute drive would have prompted many car deliveries for me. 😂 I'm thankful that we have been able to find great midwives that live close enough. Thaks for sharing your story!

Oh my goodness. I am so sorry you had to go through all of this! So glad you didn't have to stay one night/day longer. Jolene is a beautiful name!

Thanks so much, Beverly! Yes - we are so grateful that it was only 3 nights. We would have most definitely left AMA otherwise.

Congratulations on your sweet Jolene! I, too, have a Jolene. It's a lovely name.❤

Thank you! We added her name to our "someday maybe baby name list" some 10 years ago... it wasn't even really at the top through my pregnancy, but when she was born, it just fit her. And I'm now in LOVE with her name. So fun that you have a daughter that shares the same one. ❤️

I just want to say doctor are held under the policies the non doctors that run the hospital make. My friend tells me all the time he cannot make certain decisions because he signed a contract saying he will follow the policy. This is why I don’t trust hospitals unless it’s an emergency. Even then I don’t trust them. I’m sorry for your experience.
@AFamilyFoodStory
@AFamilyFoodStory Год назад
Yes - it is definitely the policies that are part of the problem. But... I think that by the time doctors and nurses go through the necessary schooling, most of them have been so brainwashed by the system that they are in no position to even question the policy. 🤔 Unfortunately, this seems to be the case with most of the industries that make up our society. So happy to be out of there!

I also would have threatened to charge them with kidnapping and holding people hostage

I'm so sorry you guys had to deal with all of this. While NICUs definitely have their place, I could relate SO MUCH to having to satisfy the ridiculous requirements to just get out. 🤯😜

Yes, they do have their place... but man oh man, their policies can be impossible!

I hate it when they don’t listen about the blood work! I know where they will get the best vein and have had to deal with idiots! I coslept with my children also. My daughter has worried about it also and I have explained how it works and she is now planning to sleep also. For me it was vital to have my baby with me! I could not sleep without my child and once I had them with me I would sleep so much better and the baby did also! Both my daughters had infant apnea and I was able to sleep with them wires and everything! It is all about control in the hospital! The hospital will call social services because they believe they have the power and the patients will do whatever they want. They do this by i intimidation
@AFamilyFoodStory
@AFamilyFoodStory Год назад
So happy that you were able to talk your daughter into co-sleeping! It is SO beneficial all around. ❤️ Yes - control and liability prevention. They would rather do dozens of unnecessary interventions in order to cover themselves against any possible bad outcome. The problem is that they fail to recognize the underlying consequences that may not be so easy to sue for.

I have had 3 failed back surgeries and been put on medication that have cost me so much more than the money. The side effects of the medication have left me with memory issues and more health problems. The one thing it has done has woken me up to how the system works for the hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry not the people. I now make a lot of the medication I use and have researched ingredients to find different plants to treat my own health issues and to help my family with herbs and supplements. I don’t trust the medical establishment in the USA at all.

@@Mindy56743 I feel for you as I am in the same situation. I have had to have all my teeth pulled as a result of the side effects of a medication I am on for pain relief for a dibilitating back injury and now I need an MRI that insurance won’t approve until I go through six weeks of physical therapy which is absurd that they dictate the level of medical care and not my neurosurgeon 😮

I'm so sorry this all happened 😢 Hospitals are great for emergency medicine, but the allopathic medical industry and their draconian practices just don't resonate with me anymore, and I can tell you guys feel similar. Thinking of you and your family, hoping you can heal quickly from all the trauma. 🥺
@AFamilyFoodStory

I agree - had our baby NEEDED lifesaving measures, we would have been SO thankful and in a much different place. (maybe... 😬 at least I would hope so, but I'm sure that there would be things that I would find to disagree with) Because yes - their practices are draconian! I am thankful that God has prepared us in just the right way to be the perfect people to deal with the situation and make the best of it. I was able to quickly recover from the lack of sleep, not being able to care for my baby the way I wanted, and being totally on edge and in defense mode the whole time we were there.

Gosh I have so much to say…but…I’ll limit it to I hate the bili blanket. Long story short, my pediatrician told me that not even sunlight helps jaundice. She said it clears up by feeding the baby so the baby can go to the bathroom and clear it out of their system. So how does it make sense to separate the baby from its food source to be on the “blanket”?

I've not done much research on whether or not light is effective or not, but I'm thinking that there is probably a lot of unnecessary "caution" taken for a process that is actually very natural. 😢

I am SO thankful we had the knowledge we did going into this environment, but looking back, we realize how unprepared we were. If we had it to do over, we would have done so much more to fight for our rights and the wellbeing of our baby. Thankfully, nothing life changing or detrimental... and for now, we can be thankful for the experience and the value that came from it to help others.

I think the majority of doctors do more harm then good these days

You guys sound as if you were more polite than I would have. I once let a nurse tell me what to do during child birth that was a disaster and then never again. I will not ever again let a doctor or nurse tell me what treatment they are going to do. I must agree or it doesn’t happen . We get to say they are not God even though they think they are.They have forgotten their oath to first do no harm. I have lost faith in the medical community over the last 5 or so years

Honestly, having very little experience working with hospitals - especially the nicu... we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. With that experience behind us, we can now say that it would look very different - but lets just pray that we don't have a second go around! 😬 The hardest part is that they have a tendency to sneak things in without even really telling you, let alone ask for permission! I've learned that you need to pay even closer attention than what we did.
