Trying to FIX a Faulty PlayStation VR Headset (PSVR)

Hi, this video shows me attempting to repair a PlayStation VR headset that does not display and doesn't have audio. I bought it from eBay for £20. If you want to watch a shorter version of this video then please see my other 13 minute video.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

A beautiful fix mate, kudo’s for fiddling around with those Tiny wires without damaging more of them.

I watched the video closely. When you gradually eliminated damage and finally found a broken cable, I knew you might be able to fix the problem. I was glad I was right. you are an inspiration and a source of information for me. Even though I am a stranger and have to watch a video with subtitles, it is a lot of fun for me.

I had a faulty one given to me, screen was black but when you moved a certain part of the cable that runs from the headset it would come on and give green lines. Stripped the cable back and found the shielding had been some how damaged, replaced the shielding and hey presto it worked perfectly and I'd scored a complete ps4 vr system for free... Like you I just enjoy fixing things and have no formal training.. Keep up the good work 🙏🏻

Thank you for the pinout and for showing it close up to the camera :) I have had one sat open for like 5 weeks that I believe to be an issue with the power wire since I get no lights and I've been taking my time watching your two videos for this pinout. I just need to get a slot of time to test the pins against your pinout to test that hypothesis.

Didn’t expect you’d read my post about PSVR, it’s great to see you progress in troubleshooting. The issue with your dishwasher in particular were interesting. Edit: A tip, a useful tool known as ”tonal generator” (rough translation from Swedish) can help you find broken leads. At one end you generate the tone (an EM field is generated) and the 2nd part of the tool you sweep/hover over the cable and follow along the chord until the tone stops - and voila, you’ve found where the continuity stops.
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince 4 года назад
Thanks, I do have one from my telecom days. I used to use it to find telephone wires but I have never used it to find a break. I can try that next time. I am not sure if my one would work because it is very powerful and can travel miles down the wires, the problem is that is can induce onto the neighbouring wires, so I think I would hear it all along the cable and not just on the cable before the break :-)
@Ohem1
@Ohem1 4 года назад
My Mate VINCE there are ones with very low voltage/output, and even if those’d bleed the signal it’d would be diminished in the neighbouring wires and you could determine where it starts to go down in tone. Sure it’d feel redundant buying a new one when you already have one, like screwdrivers that comes with every specialized toolkit. But it’s a thought at least, helped me identify network cables at lan events 7-8 years ago.

I think it is the hdmi connection, i would have stripped the small button unit first, and tried doing continuity checks between the pins and the circuit, that would narrow that problem, i believe the sound is pulled directly from the cable, and that it doesnt return the signal. as their is still only two wires going out.. Im assuming my PSVR has a lose cable near the white control box near the headset because when the cable moves slightly on one end (and slightly on the other) the screen shows white pixels artifacting the whole screen and every now and then total blackouts for split seconds, do you think I should take the cable out of the end and reconnect it or might it be inside the actual box?

Great work and thanks for finding our the pin out work here. I managed to send it power and have detected as a hdmi device without the actually box. From there i suspect that the other wire must be some kind of usb that send commands and stuff in order to turn it on and some other shit. I might dig into this eventually on my free time when i get my hand on a extra box to see what it sending and hope for nothing too encrypted. Anyway. What i did to fix it for now is to add db25 connectors on both ends and it work perfectly; it's a dirty fix and the wire is a bit bulky though.

If you have two separate ground wires you can disconnect one of them and use just one and connect all ground pins to it. Then just use another free wire to resolve your connection between ends. Does it make sense?

Nice fix Vince, but personally I would have been thinking more of just replacing the whole cable with a half decent quality HDMI lead, I say half decent lead so that you know its not a cheap one from a pound shop that tends to cut a few corners and have wires missing. I know it would have been a bit tedious soldering 19 pins, but I am sure you are more than capable and it would look far better and be a lasting repair.

Dear Vince, great job. I have similar problem with my kids vr, no screen on vr. Before I lost the screen totally, I was having noise on the screen when I touch the cable. That's why I believe we have similar problem. I followed your steps, I checked out continuity of both power cable and hmdi cable. All cables have continuity except one difference to your diagram. For hdmi cable, if i connect to any hdmi pin, correspondent to pins 1-8 on board side, I have a continuity on all pins 1-8 on board side plus ground (assuming you mention ground when continuity with copper foil on the board side). This wasn't your case, right? I mean in the video you mentioned for hdmi pin 19 you got continuity only with pin 1 on board side, no other pins or ground.

Good show, congratulations! Others have mentioned, and I agree: I find it does pay to beef up the strain relief of thin cables near the connectors early on, especially ones which see lots of action -- say veteran, proprietary USB cords, this kind of thing, etc. In the states at least, you can get stretchy silicone tape in the plumbing section of the hardware store; it's cohesive and cures in place so as not to unroll and flag later on. That or maybe a coil spring held on with some silicone around the original molded strain relief bit. A spring might provide a little added help with that RF noise on the conductors if they've already developed a thin spot inside the bundle, but more realistically it's sometimes easier to wind cables through a spring than to get a good fit with heat shrink tube big enough to clear the connectors. Cheers!
