FYI ... This Video helped me repair this DVD Drive ... Who knew that DVD writers would come back and be relevant in 2024! Oh, just found a 10Gig Maxtor Mac Drive in the basement that used to run the entire iMac computer say 1999ish.
This drive is still being sold as "new" on Amazon. Company also asked me to change my review for the exchange. I told them that my integrity is not for sale.
I had a similar problem. Device used to work.... then I got it out today and it did not. Your video helped. In my case the board on back had a different chip/component layout. I unplugged the usb cable and plugged it back in... and then when I plugged it into my computer it worked. I am disappointed that it did not work initially. But I am happy to have a workaround of taking it apart , unplugging the usb cable on the little board and plugging it in works for me. (BTW: My drive had a 2012 manufacturing date on it.)
Repaired a drive for a fellow employee. It was just purchased in 2022. Internal drive was a 2009. Label was yellowed. Drive was faulty refused to finalize the disc. Ended up swapping internal drive with a much newer 2012 :P Had to replace the faceplate with the old one as it was too wide and refused to open. It just has three clips to unfasten.
My drive is recognised by Windows 11 and will show up in Explorer (but only after a registry tweak) and can play original CDs properly, but when I try to burn a CD using Nero the blank disc (have tried different brands as well) just spins and spins with the unit making odd noises but won't start the burn process. I had similar problems. It worked for me once. When plugged in, it will do a host of things. Kill the power to the PC, kill the function of other USB connected devices, cause an error about power problems on the device. I did a 2-star review a week ago and just got an email from the company wanting to send me a new unit or refund to erase the review. The fact that they don't even have their own domain and are using a hotmail account for email is telling.
Mine worked o.k. but when I tried to play a DVD today it didn't. Apple tech support said it was the player and not my MacBook Air. If the internal parts are recycled that does seem deceptive.
I hate this thing. My son just bought me one for mother's day 2024. It's a piece of junk. Has to be plugged directly into my Mac and the cord is so stinking short. And the tray will not open. I wonder if it's too late for refund. Just about 3 months old.
Mine that I received recently also contained a re-packaged old (10 years old) drive. HP in my case. I sent it back for a refund. Very deceptive (if not illegal) practice.
I'm having the exact same problem same model. The DVD writer inside mine is a toshiba samsung storage technology korea corp manufactured July 2008. I purchased the Rioddas "new" in 2018 off amazon. disappointing.
