1) This was far more entertaining than I thought it was going to be. 2) Even with the inconsistencies, this is still an embarrassingly accurate recount of the core plot...
I always have to commend the editing on these videos. Nevermind that I actually want to play some of these games, it's worth it for the laughs that you guys, and the editing, provide.
Despite major philosophical differences, Xenogears/Saga have the most epic and compelling story I've ever encountered. Told a friend the other day if I suddenly became a billionaire, the first thing I'd do is fund Tetsuya Takahashi's dream to complete the Gears/Saga story, and only after that would I worry about saving the world. Also, your memory is actually pretty good on this one!
Maria's mech is based on Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still which has an even fatter mech built for shoulder-riding. Meanwhile the nanomachine colony snuck into Granblue as Kolulu to be one of its retro Square references.
I didn't even play most of the games you have used for these videos, but I still watch them. They're very fun. I guess Im missing out some of the experience by not knowing what's wrong or right, but I enjoy them regardless.
Oooooh boy, here we go! I've been SOOOO waiting for this! Aaaaand I have to acknowledge there's someone more confused about this game's plot than me. I never figured out the recurring villain in this game was the freaking Armordillo who can only say "OK"!
You definitely did remember some loose parts of it but yeah, it‘s definitely not that accurate so here are some things I wanna point out (and yes, I know the video is old): -Elly actually leaves the Party during the campfire scene after she and Fei were saved by Citan. Citan and Fei then continue to the Desert where they also meet Grahf for the first time, who was also the guy that actually planned the attack at Lahan and once again awakened Fei‘s alternate personality -The country (aka Aveh) was originally supposed to be ruled by Bart but some guy named Shakhan took over and then enslaved Bart and his cousin Margie (with Margie also being the holy mother of the Nisan religion). Bart was one day freed and formed this crew of Sand Pirates in order to one day take back his Kingdom -Ramsus, not Rammus. His whole thing is that he‘s angry about Fei because of past events. He was planned to basically be a host for the same powers that Fei has but once Fei was born and it was found out that he has those special powers, Ramsus was thrown in the dumpster (also Ramsus got his shit kicked in by Id, Fei‘s alternate personality, once) -Miang is sort of immortal. She is kind of like a Virus that exists inside every woman. When the current incarnation of Miang dies, a woman on Xenogears‘s planet becomes the new Miang, completely overwriting the identity and original memories of that woman -After saving Margie, they‘re not really on the run. They go to Nisan where they bring Margie to safety and then decide to start an attack at Aveh in an attempt to take it back. However, this fails horribly, Fei awakens to his powers again like at Lahan and then gets found and captured by Kislev and thrown in prison -Fei is the only one in prison, actually. Bart is still trying to take back the Kingdom while Citan sneaks inside Kislev and tries to help Fei escape the Prison. -What comes after the Prison sequence, with the elements and stuff, is mostly accurate, yeah. But you also kind of forgot the entire Ethos section. Basically Fei gets knocked out pretty badly and they need a Healer. So they find this religious kid called Billy who brings Fei to the Ethos HQ (which is basically just another church like Nisan) for Healing. Then later on they find out that Billy was manipulated by the Ethos in order to kill the „Wels“, which are basically Zombies and failed human experiments. The Ethos is also a part of Solaris that keeps the Land Dwellers (or Lambs) in check and they try to go underground and find a abandoned civilization because they had some advanced tech like a girl comprised of nanomachines called Emeralda. The underground civilization is also the place where the Party fights against Fei‘s alternate personality Id -Maria is actually part of another flying City called „Shevat“, who also tried to fight against Solaris many years ago but they kind of failed and then they team up with Fei and the crew in order to stop Solaris (even though Maria is the only one that really helps from Shevat) -Gotta love how everyone that played Xenogears remembers the canned human flesh -Actually the Party gets captured and Citan sort of betrays them because he has some ties with Solaris (and was originally a citizen of it). But it was actually just a show so they try to flee but get stopped by Grahf, Grahf awakens Id inside Fei again and Fei completely destroys Solaris -Fei and Elly actually leave the Party after Solaris‘s destruction in order to live peacefully because whenever Fei is under emotional stress, Id awakens and sort of destroys everything. But then they get shot down by Ramsus and Weltall crashlands, which is also where Disc 1 ends -The actual Boat thing was way earlier. It was actually after Fei, Citan and Rico escaped Prison, met up with Elly again and then got shot down by Bart -the Ethos part came earlier, like mentioned. You did remember Elly being in a tube though. Fei also was in a tube as well after both were shot down by Ramsus at the end of Disc 1 -God is actually the Wave Existence which exists inside the Zohar. But yes, Fei actually upgrades his Gear into the Xenogears trough the Wave Existences power (also the Wave Existences power was in him all along which is why he is so strong and gets reincarnated over and over) -Fei‘s past was that his mother became Miang and did experiments on him to obtain his power. Fei then suppressed his trauma and pain which then created Id and that‘s also why Id is so aggressive and full of hatred. Also like mentioned before, Fei is the reincarnation of something known as the „Contact“ -Ramsus doesn‘t die but gets manipulated by Miang to kill her which then results in Elly getting taken over by Miang -Miang „summons“ Deus, an ancient weapon system that crash landed thousands of years ago on the planet. She created humanity on the planet in order to sacrifice them to Deus and rebuild him. To do that, she also needed Elly because she‘s the alternative to Fei‘s Contact powers with her being the Antitype -Elly is sort of a part of God. She was created by the Wave Existence/God and Abel‘s (Fei‘s original incarnation) wish for a mother figure. However, one of her later incarnations was Sophia, who was the holy mother of Nisan. So both of your claims are correct! Another important thing to add is that God isn‘t inherently evil in Xenogears. It just got trapped inside the Zohar thousands of years ago by human experiments and reincarnated the Contact and Antitype over the years in an attempt to get freed from the Zohar, which would require killing Deus since it‘s linked to the Zohar and draws power from it. Deus is a false God since it‘s just a Weapon system but get‘s seen by many people in the story as a God. Also interesting you completely forgot Krelian since he‘s basically on the same level of importance as Miang. He also helped with Deus‘s resurrection with his vast knowledge on technology and wanted to resurrect it because he believed there was no God in the universe and wanted to create one with his own hands. Even with most of it being incorrect, I still really enjoyed this video!
I'm impressed you actually remembered that the nude woman in the intro was Miang, considering you don't learn ANYTHING about the intro until the game is just about over and the plot has gone off the rails.
Not sure which would be tougher to recall accurately, Xenogears or Chrono Cross. Probably Cross because of the alternate timelines. Definitely should do more of these. Final Fantasy IV, VI, XII, and Tactics for sure. Oh, and X-2 is ripe for editing fun.
I do find it's 'easier' to explain the plot of xenogears if you tell it in a timeline format instead of following the actual events of the story because you find out everything basically being interconnected to stuff that happened thousands of years ago. So it's easier to follow instead of going along in the story of the game where you get like hours worth of exposition dumps.
Yeah a pretty poor job recalling the overall story but honestly, I BEAT the game back in the day and still had to watch several videos and read several plot synopsis essays and timeline videos to fully understand WTH was happening in this game so I don't hold it against you.
This was awesome. I know everyone always praises Xenogears for some wonderfully complex and compelling story, but I "remember" the story just like you did... a cluster F of nonsensical comedy... and lots of mechas.
