I’m currently working on some abstract paintings…They are not finished, I’m right in the awkward middle bit, where I’m trying to find some resolution, to move them forward and develop them, to let each painting unfurl into what it is going to become....

Your generosity with thought process is so appreciated. I think the questions you ask yourself here would also improve observational drawings. I'm going to start using them today. Thank you!

I love how you look at colors, patterns and design and how you reinvent the designs over and over again in new and exciting ways. It endlessly inspires me. Your work is so bright and fresh and alluring. I also really appreciate your color pallets and combinations that contrast and yet flow well. I love the thought, passion and your sharing of the experiences you have while creating.

New subbie here, and binge watched your videos. I really appreciate how you explain your thinking process and application....other art videos I have watched seem quite guarded regarding this and just produce a piece of work without the depth of feeling (passion?) behind it. I find your videos quite motivating and very interesting, thanks for sharing. :)

Some very useful reminders Helen! Would these abstracts be your final paintings on paper or would you transfer them to wooden panels? I love your mantelpiece artwork in your sketchbook. My mantelpiece isn't that interesting apart from my woodwose man and a couple of candlesticks! 😂Come to think of it - they could be a great starting point for me! Thank you always for your videos. I look upon you as a friend who gives great advice. Have a lovely week ahead. x

I found this really interesting. I am exploring abstract art for the first time, so it is a very new thing for me and very intriguing and exciting. One thing I found interesting in the video was where you said that our eyes are drawn to areas of contrast. I find personally that I don't like too much contrast, I find it very jarring sometimes if contrast is too great. But I imagine contrast as a concept is probably rather subjective! Thanks for the video 😊

Thank you for your videos! I really like this one about abstract work. I usually stick to figurative art because it is so hard to define what I should be aiming for in abstract art. You have given me some concrete (ha ha!) goals. I think I'll start experimenting and playing with abstract art now, too, thanks to you.

Thank you for this, so many thought provoking ideas and techniques to think about. You explain those things really clearly. I am not working in abstract but am struggling with composition and tonal value. I can see several clear questions that I need to ask myself now!
@HelenWellsArtist

Thank you for this post Helen it was immensely helpful! Especially about values and tones, balance and harmony. All four are so important when related to painting and art! Your point towards the end about painting abstract art is so true! My own art is mostly representative and was quite realistic in the past. Personally I found it quite difficult to articulate and express my feelings through abstract then I lost the ability to paint completely simply for that very reason...I was told I could not paint abstract (the tutor became frustrated with my inability to paint abstract 🙄☹) sad to say I gave up trying. HOWEVER, I picked up my paint brushes and paints again about 2 months ago ❤ so there is that! Phew! Now I paint for myself. Thank you again Helen! I am saving this video for future reference. ❤🌹a lot more thought is needed when painting abstract I'm sure...but I am determined to carry on trying!

Oh what a lovely share. I’m sorry your tutor was so ridiculous! Abstract art is not easy and I think it can take a life time to get to grips with. So many famous artists started as representational painters and then edged towards finding their own abstract language. I wish you every success and joy in the art making process and finding the way of making your art that makes your heart sing…Love Helen x

I looooooove that you work on big sheet of paper. I always see artist painting on canva or wood pannel (I know you do that too). I'm a "paper girl". I really love the feeling of paper. I'm doing the 100 day project and I paint on bits and pieces of recycled food packaging (very small). I was thinking to going big and give it a try on a large piece of paper, but... how do you frame it when it's finished?
@HelenWellsArtist
@HelenWellsArtist Год назад
Yes I love paper so much. And in terms of a frame I'd only frame it if I was keeping it or it was going in a show.. but I'd just get a big frame....x
