I recently found your channel after deciding to embark on a journey to learn Finnish. It looks like your channel has about eight or nine years of content, so plenty here to keep me busy for a long time! Thanks so much for all your hard work! You really do a great job explaining things, and you make it really clear to hear how words are supposed to be pronounced. This will be my sixth language (I've studied Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, French, and Russian). Hoping to add Finnish and Swedish next!

22:23 'Viesti on kirjoitettu talvella' - We cannot tell precisely, because lumimyrräkkä can happen both in spring and in autumn. And if people write in Finnish, it does not necessarily mean they are in Finland. Maybe they are on Länsimaa (Norja) or in mountains in South Chile. 🤷‍♂ There should also be a comma after 'Hei Ulla'.
@KatChatsFinnish
@KatChatsFinnish 10 месяцев назад
That’s true but I don’t think they want you to over analyze in the exam 😅😅 but if you get it wrong maybe it’s a way to appeal to the examiner hahaha

@@KatChatsFinnish truth is more important to me than what the examiners want. ✌ I dislike that the test authors expect people to adapt and lie. The system must be fair and encourage honesty.

Kiitos tästä! Nice to see some more advanced Finnish on RU-vid! So much of what you find is geared to the beginner, understandably as that's where the most viewers are I guess. It's not the easiest to find things in Finnish when you're at the "I understand more than a child but not a fully functional" adult yet level.

In Russia and postSoviet countries (especially where people speak Russian) using just first names is a big NO if you talk to older colleagues or older people in general, and in most cases to your boss (but now, in modern companies, where your boss is more or less the same age as you, that's changing). You can use it while talking to colleagues of the same level and the same age. Last names aren't used, the common polite way is to use the name + the patronymic (the father's name), for example Ivan Ivanovich (Ivan, the Ivan's son). We have the patronymic in our documents (actually, they put my patronymic as a middle name in my passport, I am Evgeniy Viktorovich - my father's name was Victor) - almost all of us, people who have no father or people from some ethnic groups may not have it, but usually they put an arbitrary one (for example, I had a friend who is a single mother, her son doesn't have info about the father in his birth certificate -> she put a patronymic for him as she wanted when she got a birth certificate for him)

'Sitä' is the partitive (mitä) form of 'se'. Example: Älä osta sitä. 'Siitä' is the elative (mistä) form of 'se'. Example: Ota siitä uusi lautanen. If it helps, think of 'sitä' as se-ta and 'siitä' as se-sta.

This is my one issue stopping me getting citizenship. I can manage in everyday life but letters and some more detailed things I struggle with. It wouldn’t even have been an issue but for the stupid Brexit that happened so now I’m just a third country national with no EU rights…….gutting 😕 The YKI test is beyond my level at the moment.

Assuming you're British (or does Brexit affect more countries when it comes to third nation status?), it might have been easier for you to learn Swedish instead. (If that counts for Finnish citizenship. I don't know if it does). Swedish and English are related languages. After you got Finnish citizenship you could then have dropped the Swedish and continued learning Finnish at your own pace. But now if you're half-way there with Finnish it might be easier to continue with Finnish.

@PavelQuiteGood
@PavelQuiteGood 10 месяцев назад
