Failure is never fun, but they do happen. I tried my hand at sublimating Kydex and it didn't work. I have learned a few things since recording this and need to give them a try.

If you want I can print you a few on the epson paper I use. I have the F170. Also pressure when sublimating is important, mostly light. One more thing 200 some seconds seems a bit long. Usually I see 60 to 85 seconds at 400. I have never done kydex sooooo I don’t know the setting but with the f170 I have the option to use hard surface or textile.

They are supposed to be faded. They will brighten up once you put something on it IE... Gun oil so that the plastic can rehydrate, it also makes the colors pop after. The paper is not going to come off easy, its supposed to stick a little bit. if it sticks then just clean it with orange cleaner, it takes the paper right off

Those images make me think hydro dipping might be more appropriate and easier. Alternatively, I used to have a DTG. You just pretreated with this stuff that I sprayed on a, d then you could print on golf balls, tiles, keyboard, etc. Spray to seal. You could probably laminate to seal. What about just water on the ones with paper still on it? Dissolve it off? I'm not familiar with sublimation. Did heat transfer vinyl, or printed vinyl and heat transfer, or dtg.

Sublimation. My favorite kind of limation.

Water and a sponge will clean the paper off and probably make the prints look nice. The warping, can't help you with that.

the warping doesnt matter, its going to be heated again and then thrown over an item and pressed.

Never subbed to Kydex, however I sublimate onto canvas all the time. The trick is to first apply a real thin layer of lamination film, then sub onto it. For cooling I put it on the cement floor and put a piece of Corian (from a countertop) on it. Flat, heavy enough and helps to cool it faster.

I'll give that a try, thanks.

Look at sublimation ceramic mugs. We use a sawgrass vj628 printer, works nice.

Is this the same stuff where you can lay the printed sheet in a tub of water and lay the kydex gently overtop of the ink.

I've done kydex successfully, your dwell time is way too long. I do 380f for 70 seconds light pressure, peel transfer immediately, flat weight on top til cool. Would love to see another attempt at it. On the others you did at 300f the temp was way too low for sublimation. The sublimation process doesn't fully gas until 350f so those were very faded. Because of that.

Awesome, I'll give those settings a try.

Do you put the sublimation paper on top or bottom?

Your color did not match because the file was in one color profile (CMYK or RGB). And you chose a opposite color for the background. This caused me so much headache early on until I found this out last year why it would never match.

Do you try with sublimation primer?

its kydex, soak it in water afterward and brush the paper off.

It looks like hey are overcooked, either too much heat or too much pressure, or both.... The transfer should not stick to the substrate. I've had transfer paper stick to slate when over cooked/over heated. For instance suggested temp/time of my slate was 400 degrees/7-8 mins. Way too much, I cut the time down to 4mins 20secs and got perfect results, but that's for slate.... I would try 60 seconds with light pressure on that plastic you are sublimating to. Not too light though!! I feel like the transfer should also be on top, not bottom but that could be specific to that plastic. You would need something heavier to flatten them out, flat metal weights work nice. I've had FRP plastic ornaments warp on me, thankfully I scored 4 of these SEAL flat weights at a liquidation sale. Let me know if you need any transfers printed, I've got an Epson F570 and I'd be happy to help. Here is a link to the SEAL weights, a little expensive but they get the job done. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/47250-REG/Seal_Bienfang_SE_997_Weight_20x20_Flat.html

Sometimes in minor cases you can use a damp magic eraser to get that paper off the substrate. Flat razor blades will just scratch the image, I learned the hard way!
