I can't believe you got the negatives out and then didn't trichrome them for the video, nice

Back in the mid-70s, this camera was amazing. With the leather variant, if you had any bad exposures, you could send them to Polaroid and they would send a fresh pack--I am not making this up. The image was smooth--no grain--and the colors were rich. I found about 20 images in a drawer recently and the colors in most are still rich.

How to make Polaroid shooting even more expensive 😅
@ethanpschwartz
@ethanpschwartz Год назад
Owning a vintage Polaroid is one of the most frustrating things unless you want it to sit on a shelf and look pretty. Even if you manage to find and/or pay out the nose for film, there are so many points of failure in the camera. I have one that takes 100 Type and there's currently only one place that makes it and they charge 50 Euros for THREE pictures. Considering I'm not confident the camera would even work, that's a gamble I'm not wiling to take. So... it's sitting on a shelf looking pretty.
@atticdarkroom
@atticdarkroom Год назад
Yeah that's a real bummer. They're really nice cameras when they work, but so many things can go wrong.

I didn't know you could get a negative out of a polaroid, I knew about emulsion lifts, but not about retrieving the negative. Also, I've own two SX-70's. One works kinda, uneven exposures from time to time, and the other just ejects the whole pack of film as soon as you put it in. The joys of polaroid.

I always assumed polaroids worked like slide film. Never knew there was a negative involved
@atticdarkroom
@atticdarkroom Год назад
Fun fact slide film is first developed as a negative then reversed. The negative is then bleached out.
@kubagurpl8130
@kubagurpl8130 Год назад
@@atticdarkroom Does that mean you could get similar results with normal film if you bleach it?
@keisisqrl
@keisisqrl Год назад
@@kubagurpl8130 you can absolutely process C41 film in E6, and there's a reversal process for black and white slides (actually at least three off the top of my head, because of course there are) which are made from basically any black and white film with a clear base.
@ianbakke
@ianbakke 6 месяцев назад
@@kubagurpl8130I did reversal on normal black and white for slide shows when I went to school (does sound like I’m over 50, but no I’m under 25). What you can do is using hydrogen peroxide and vinegar as a bleach. What the bleach does it to remove the developed silver, the opposite of a fixer. First you develop like normally and then put the film in bleach, take the film out and expose it to light, and then back into the developer again. And there you go, you have black and white slides.
@PiotrekGrzesiak

The SX70 is a beautiful SLR camera with a 40-year-old light meter that's definitely getting unreliable in my case. I adore both the look and the focusing on it but really wish I could get it to be more consistent. And I've been debating on and off selling it and trying to buy a Nons or something

I've shot quite a few Black and White Polaroids (600 film in my case) and the majority of them have that brown "light leak" at the top center. I think it's just a fault in the film itself in my opinion. Considering they formed over time and not when i initially shot them.

My main tip for emulsion lifts is leaving the Polaroid under the warm water for a longer time, like 15-20 minutes and you won't struggle with taking it off

I truly love this channel, as someone who is very new to film and photography in general. Love that you focus on the actual film and developing process. So many other channels are focused on gear, cameras, lenses, etc that it doesn't make them much different from a digital camera. Hopefully soon I'll be learning how to develop myself at home. Thank you so much for the great content!

It might be that in some way heavy colored filters affect this to a point of big difference in exposures. Fun video btw.

either it's a bad camera, or a great camera depending on the type of art you want to make. personally i lean into the abstract, and find that the consistency of digital technology renders it quite pointless to expect antique equipment do the same. if i want a perfect image, i don't need a vintage camera to get it. i find it aesthetically pleasing to not a perfect image, and to fight with the process. the organic world is imperfect, and fluctuates...to expect our cold industrious technology to be perfect clashes with nature in this respect. i find these abstract outcomes of the experiments far more interesting than the compositions alone...to an extent so does this film's creator, who thinks the journey of that process is worth documenting and sharing as a youtube video instead of just presenting the photos with no context in a gallery. however it's not my camera, it's not my art against the firing squad of a critical audience...so it's not my place to say what should or shouldn't happen to the camera, the art, or what the owner decides to be done with the camera.

I have a weird idea: if you use a panchromatic b&w and a orthochromatic i think you can get a color image by using the luminance of the first image and the chroma from the spectral sensitivity difference

Yeah, I know what you mean. My last good experience with Polaroid cameras was with FujiFilm 100C and 100B pack film using an original Polaroid Auto 100 from 1964. That film went away but I still had a Polaroid 600 that someone gave me. I tried the Impossible Project film, the results were unacceptable to me. Later I tried the "New" Polaroid film and it was only marginally better. I was watching RU-vid videos with people using Fuji Instax Wide film and was envious. The Fuji Instax cameras seemed to me to be over-priced toys with very little flexibility. Mint camera produced a really interesting camera using the Instax Wide film but it's just to expensive for me. I finally bought an Fujifilm Instax Wide Smartphone printer on sale for around $100 with a few packs of film. I take photos with a Canon DSLR and transfer the images to my smartphone via the Canon app and then I print the photos from the phone with the Fuji app. Very kludgy but it works. I took photos at my neighbors birthday party and was able to give them prints on the spot. No need to ask everyone for their phone numbers to send the photos via cellphone, they could take the prints home and stick them to their refrigerator like normal people do!
@atticdarkroom
