Got this in a game once. I had two knights and my opponent had a bishop and pawn. My opponent just parked his bishop next to my king to be captured and then immediately offered a draw. Little did he know... I accepted and went to take a shit.

@@pairot01 Not quite, you can still mate, it just can't be forced. The only situations where it's draw due to insufficient material are: K v. K, KB v. K, KN v. K, and KB v. KB where the bishops are on the same colour

I love his opponents cooperation when he gives him more time. Every now and then a position shows up that is so interesting or special that opponents want to see it happen more then they want to win. That’s true love of the game right there.

Great video Eric! Interestingly, in the NIemann game, the pawn was not behind the Troitski line, so it would have been interesting to see where Black went wrong, because he could have theoretically held the draw.

It's usually because the player takes their king to the wrong corner. I believe it's even happened to Karpov. Unbelievably difficult to play OTB if you haven't looked into it before.

Don't worry, do some training on your chess website of choice. I believe all of them have separate ways to train these with a bot.

With rook you just box enemy king around, so it can only have less squares than like 2 moves before. It's easy if you give it some training

You need to make a combination to force the king to an edge, then you need to force it to go up, by moving your king up a square, then the rook one and repeat, until in the corner, and then is easy

according to tablebase, the position at move 56 in Hans' game (20:08) actually is winning for white (though it theoretically violates the 50 move rule) the Troitsky line determines whether white can force a win given any possible position of the other four pieces, but this doesnt rule out that some positions involving the pawn passed the line might still have a forced win for white. (Also, it doesnt take into account the 50 move rule. Theres a "Second Troitsy line" that does)

If you want to try a really hard endgame, go for two bishops vs knight, which is always winning(with obvious exceptions) if not for the 50 moves rule.

Most 'advanced' endgame I know is double bishop. Probably (and i hope that I) wont need knight and bishop and this endgame :). Way to hard

I encountered this only the other a day. Trying to win from what seemed a good advantage point was so frustrating and brain-draining that I was actually relieved to be forced into a draw.

When the pawn has crossed the Troitzky line, there is always a drawing zone for the black king. In this case, the drawing zone is between the a1 and a8 corner (furthest away from the blockading knight). Hans' opponent didn't know enough theory to know that staying on the a-file would have been enough to draw the game.

This is why chess is so amazing. Logically, it doesn't make sense that giving the opponent an extra pawn takes it from a draw to a forced mate, but tactics trumps logic.

Moving a pawn resets the 50 move count. Since a pawn can't move back, a pawn move counts as progress.

@@apotato1213 In order to deliver mate, white has to put the black in a position where it has no legal moves before manouvring a knight to deliver a check. This would result in a stalemate if it wasn't for that pawn.

I just ended up in an endgame with 1 knight and my king vs a king and thought that there was a checkmate I was missing. Is there any way I could have won that game? It ended in a draw

No, it's impossible to checkmate with only a king and knight against a king, even if your opponent is trying to help you do it. There's no way to put the king in check and also cut off all his possible escape squares because a knight can only threaten squares of one colour at a time.

Not really, no. It all depends on your starting point. I was an 833 in November of '21 and as of September '22 I'm a 1600 and with consistent studying i will be crossing the 1666 barrier having doubled my rating. Going from 2000 to 2700 in a year? Absurd for the average player. Going from 700 to 1400 in a year? Incredibly reasonable imho
