Wabi-sabi is the Japanese traditional aesthetic of seeing beauty in imperfection. Urushi lacquer with its impeccable allure has a branch that embodied wabi-sabi: Tsugaru-nuri.
Tsugaru-nuri is named so after the progenitor of the technique. It is said that the Tsugaru clan developed and promoted the Tsugaru-nuri technique starting in the latter half of the 17th century. The foundation mainly of Tsugaru-nuri Urushi lacquerware features hiba or asunaro wood, which is very durable and has a slight scent to them. The technique is based on the Tang paint technique which paints various color lacquer in layers, polishes it to give a pattern with established technique like Nanako, Koko, Nishiki.
Tsugaru-nuri are techniques hallmarked by its complex patterns and shapes created as much by the whim of chance as the skill of the craftsman. Urushi is mixed with egg whites, tofu and seeds, along with metal powders and pigments form the basis of these techniques with the intent of creating the random but expressive shapes and patterns distinctive of this techniques.
The Tsugaru-nuri technique is the embodiment of the traditional Japanese aesthestics: wabi-sabi. Wabi-sabi is aesthetic view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. It is sometimes described as one of beauty that is ""imperfect, impermanent and incomplete"". In the words of Richard Powell: ""Wabi-sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect."". This aesthetic is embodied by Tsugaru-nuri Urushi lacquerware.
In order to produce a true piece of Tsugaru-nuri Urushi lacquerware, the artisan has to come the realization that aesthetic of his work are elevated by chances but not lessened by it. The artisan has to accept that he cannot translate his vision exactly into his work. The attitude of wabi-sabi - accepting your work is not perfect - is the fundamental of Tsugaru-nuri Urushi lacquerware. Although some might not regards Tsugaru-nuri highly in the pantheons of Urushi lacquerware, the wabi-sabi aesthetic endowed each piece of Tsugaru-nuri Urushi lacquerware with unique beauty.
