A really late night impromptu visit to TTC's Davisville Yard yielded the opportunity to see an assortment of the least-documented parts of the fleet. Shot between 5:00xm and 5:50xm on November 10, 2010, this series of short videos features cars including RT-7, RT-29, RT-38-39, RT-45-46-47, RT-61-63, RT-64-65, RT-73, in the chronological order that they arrived at the yard. Some of the shaky video pans have been maintained in order to preserve the sounds of the work cars for enthusiasts. Recorded in HD on a Sony HDR-SR12. I love seeing these cars in action. (the diesel cars mostly) It's so rare to see that many in one filming trip.

Really a remarkable movie. Great stuff. Thanks for getting up all early to shoot this and show us a side of the TTC rarely seen!

I think this was an all nighter. I keep telling myself I need to do it again. One day I will. The trains will be newer but the video will be 4k.

@youdonwannaknowme They're used for maintenance purposes, including tunnel washing, crew transport, asbestos abatement, tamping, rail grinding clearance testing, and a whole host of other uses that I haven't listed.

RT-17 is a tunnel washer. RT-73 is used by the ATC construction crews for mounting new signalling equipment. It has a crank-out deck that's interlocked with the propulsion system. The rest of the cars are used for general maintenance, asbestos removal, painters, concrete work, MMF removal, etc. This video shows most of the work cars coming back around 5AM, just before the first service trains go through the area, coming from Finch Tail tracks, and Wilson yard.

Kind of reminds me of the work trains running on the subway in my hometown of New York City. Of course the trains on the mta, like the ttc here, were once regular subway trains, only to be rebuilt into work cars upon retirement. These are the types of trains we see doing track work, or garbage detail. These would be painted yellow and black, but these cars here just have a yellow stripe I have noticed, while others look like they've had their pantographic end gates removed.

This makes me sad to see what ttc did with the h5 and h6 trians reson how ik this is bc the h4 has the same headlight design as the work train

Hmm, I wonder what we're in those H1/H4 work cars... I wonder if they got rid of the bench seats to make room for equipment.

It's hard to believe, but it's true. I was just reviewing other raw video from the same time period and it's amazing to think about some things that are already there at that point or that were still around.

great video, I've never seen this kind of activity at Davisville before. What time were you in the area at and was the TR at the beginning of the video operating under its own power?

From the most I can gather, no car on the system, with the exception of some double cabed work cars, the Tokyo Rose, and some diesels can reverse in that fashion. Apparently the work car and the H1's or H4's act as a married pair like normal subway train. In fact sometimes the H series car is actually the one being pulled be because there are a few that have had their motors removed. Although the pair of H1's or H4's pulling the flatbed without a cab would work in that fashion as you have said.
