If you shoot in a studio with flash you have the choice between setting the flash power yourself (manual flash) or handing that job over to your camera and flash (TTL flash). Both have real advantages over the other and both have some drawbacks. So which is right for you? That's the question Gavin Hoey asks himself as he takes on the challenge of shooting three different shots in both Manual and TTL flash.
With TTL flash technology having come on a long way in the past few years, Gavin finds the results are a real eye opener but will it be enough to tempt him away from his preferred manual flash shooting? Watch to the end for his personal verdict.

Those 'antennae' at the end... nice! And yes - using TTL is great when you know the LimiTaTions of it. Key is knowing those limitations and adjust when you know TTL might or will get "confused" giving result you don't want. In controlled environment & needing maximum consistently manual is the best. TTL = LimiTaTions

I’ve played around with flash but not used it much to actually photograph things! I found TTL got much of what I was practicing with ok, but the more I tried to get fancier effects the less well it worked. Nice to see you found the same thing!

Gavin, it is good to acknowledge the power of the tools we photographers have at our disposal. I tend toward manual flash but rarely use a light meter though I should. Starting with TTL and switching to Manual also works well and I tend to go there before pulling out a meter. All arrows in our quiver, we should use them all. Thanks.

Call me old fashioned but I much prefer manual flash although I'll happily use TTL for event photography where changing light conditions doesn't permit time faffing about manually. Anyway Gavin, brilliant as always, oh and upgrade your lightmeter to the Sekonic L858D and you can meter for HSS too 😉

One major thing that was not pointed out, and I assume you were probably doing this, to your viewers is to make sure they compensate exposure IN the flash not compensate on the camera body when using TTL!! Big difference. One advantage of using TTL on your flash is to set your camera controls to manual. The flash will expose accordingly (i.e. 1/250 @ 2.8). Most high-end speedlights, like the Nikon SB-910, has high speed sync, exposing perfectly... for me at least.

A significant & important factor not addressed when using Ttl was the metering mode on the camera and what that meter was sampling. That makes a difference as to the ttl calculation and output. Personally I find when I use ttl the result is typically over exposed. So like others, I’ll use ttl for the first shot as a quick way to establish a flash setting (versus a light meter).

Thanks, Gavin. Like you, I was a bit surprised at how well TTL did in the early part of the shoot, and the other issues were what I'd expect. Well explained!

I’m using manual. I tried couple times TTL, but I didn’t like it. I think the best way to get the shoot you want is with manual mode!

Thanks, this is a very current issue for me as I’ve moved from studio moonlights to the AD200 which can do TTL so far have only used them in manual, but TTL with one light looks doable but probably not with multiple ones

I really like TTL under two conditions: (1) I don't have the time to get it right, like at some events (2) I am only using one light, like at some events But once things get more complicated and interesting, like mixtures (ratios) between ambient and strobes or multiple strobes then I don't even think about TTL at all, going straight to manual and my beloved light meter.

I’m new to flash photography and I like to use manual with multiple lighting setups. I have the Godox AD300 lights and every 10 shots or so (not exact) in manual mode, the lights waaay over expose.

Another great tutorial Gavin and very happy to see another Olympus shooter. I am curious as to what metering you were using for the TTL? I have found - thanks to a tip from Mike Fulton - that using using spot metering gives me more consistent results especially if I meter on the part that I want properly exposed, e.g. faces. Any thoughts on that?

In a studio I will always use manual but recently outdoors I returned to using manual mode. TTL was not giving me the results I wanted. My last shoot proved manual mode is king. TTL is for the quick point and shoots.

Thanks Gavin. Kind of what I expected as I've been VERY pleasantly surprised at how good TTL is with my Godox gear on my D850. I'm not surprised the TTL bombed in the later shots - but you did do a torture test! :-)

I'm guessing here that the studio flash is communicating with your camera the same way a dedicated flash would. Apart from your trigger is this a social feature of your studio flash unit or does the trigger handle all this?

Thanks for the informative video. Does that mean that with a TTL flash one would not use or require a light meter? I noticed you were never using one until you switched to manual. But your transmitter has modes for both TTL and manual, is that correct? Does that also mean that if I were to get a speedlight such as a Canon which is designated as ETTL that it would only shoot as TTL or can it function as a manual flash? Thanks.
@anthonyknight5114
@anthonyknight5114 5 лет назад
In my opinion, TTL is a crutch. It can be useful at times for sure, but I feel that the problem with it is that most people who use it and say it fails, don't really understand reflective metering and their camera's metering modes to begin with. TTL WILL NOT give you completely automatic perfect exposures. Considerations based on what the camera is seeing NEED to be taken into account BEFORE the shutter is pressed and then fine tuned after.
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 5 лет назад
Oddly I say the same sort of thing when teaching how a light meter works. It's a guide to what's "correct" but that's not necessarily what you want.

You have some of the most creative shoot ideas. Is that shiny material (in the second set of shots) a home made background/prop or something that can be readily purchased online somewhere? It had great texture for the theme, and the round shape was interesting on the wider shots.
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 5 лет назад
Thanks Christopher. The shiny background is a Flashpoint reflector, the link is in the description but it's... ru-vid.com?event=video_description&v=VXztfw4aG_o&redir_token=65uyGW6g1ph_kDUmJO0rziL3Oq18MTU2NDc2MjU0NEAxNTY0Njc2MTQ0&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.adorama.com%2Fglcrwp52.html%3FDyoutube%26Dsocial%26DTTL%2520vs%2520Manual%2520Flash%2520in%2520the%2520Studio%253A%2520Take%2520and%2520Make%2520Great%2520Photography%2520with%2520Gavin%2520Hoey%26Dvideo

Hey Gavin, I’m having an issue with flash compensation on the XPro. When I dial in a compensation it doesn’t change the value on the Ad200pro or 400pro. It doesn’t seem to change it to TTL 0.3 visually on the unit for example and the pictures all expose the same even if I under exposure compensate by 3 stops

Informative video you put out. Question though, When you are using Manual I see you wanted F4 to show and you kept hitting something on the Godox trigger. What exactly were you changing? I thought the light meter would tell you what settings to put the camera in?
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 5 лет назад
I'm pressing the flash test button on the transmitter. The flash meter then tells me the aperture achieved by the light it sees.

This is great, but don't the Godox/Flashpoint TTL systems have a 'hold feature' where it will keep the last TTL setting until you make a change? This would be good for those TTL situations like the last one (where you used TTL)
