Refreshers are good, thank you as always. A few notes, if you push the volts per division know in it will toggle to fine/course adjust. You probably already knew that. Also, as I noted before but didn't explain well. If you set the horizontal time to very slow, like for 20 seconds per division to capture a long process, and the trigger is set to the center of the screen the status in the upper right will say WAIT. I believe this is the scope waiting until the buffer if full before it will trigger. During this time the scope WILL NOT trigger, even the force button is ignored. This could be for over a minute and I thought the scope was broken. Moving the trigger to the far left will decrease the wait time to nearly zero. Might be a well known fact, but since we are talking basics and it royally confused me for a couple hours until I emailed the excellent tech support, thought it might be work mentioning. Oh, and a law degree too? Dang, you must like school way more than I did. I've thought about going back to school, but getting too old, and the engineers I'm seeing just out of school are a real disappointment. You working on curriculum gives me some hope though. Probably should let the hacking subject alone. Many people feel they aren't going to go after hobbyist, and businesses will pay for upgrades, they might even figure it sells more units to hobbyists this way. While hacking it has nearly zero rick of bricking the device, there are legal, and moral aspects. Like the lead solder debate, nothing good comes from going down those rabbit holes on youtube.
Thanks again for the comments and info. I did not know about the long wait you describe. I think what you are describing is the "Slow Sweep" mode described on page 4-4 of the 2020 manual. I have not tried it, but it describes waiting for the pre-trigger buffer to fill before enabling a trigger when the sweep speed is 200ms/sec or slower. Live and learn, thanks Cory.
Very good explanation of basic operation. I have a question about turning it on and off. Is there a correct way to turn it off? I mean, how do I properly turn off the scope? Is it the same way as normal PC?
I am contemplating buying this as my old oscilloscope a siglent sds1204xe doesn't have mso capability. Siglent has a competitive model "sds 2000x plus" that has slightly better software and noise floor than this model. I am comparing Rigol MSO5004 vs Siglent SDS2000X Plus

Ultimately , The courts are going to do what they want anyway, BECAUSE "LEGAL" DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN "MORALLY CORRECT" 3. This opens the door (simply put) for corporations to fuck us around 4. If they made a scope or MSO dedicated to each level without a software upgrade option and then charged the appropriate prices, I WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM BUYING THEM and i'm not an advocate of stealing. However Stealing is a subjective term, Can you really steal from a criminal ? Can you be unfair to those that are unfair towards you ? 5. In saying that, i have been in electronics since the age of 6 (i'm 49) I've been around this Rigol Hardware Hacking thing since it started with the DS100E. FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL THE NEWBIES... 6. Yes definitely consider the legalities , 100% BUT ALSO CONSIDER REALITY 7. RE WARRANTY - Technically you do void the warranty if you remove that sticker, BUT THE STICKER IS BULLSHIT AND FALLS OFF ANYWAY AND CAN BE REMOVED WITH A RAZOR AND SOME STEAM FROM BOILING WATER. RIGOL MADE NO ATTEMPT TO FIX THIS RIGOL KNOWS THAT WE UNLOCK THEIR SCOPES RIGOL AND EMONA INSTRUMENTS ARE FINE WITH IT 9. I HAVE BEEN PERSONALLY QUESTIONED BY EMONA INSTRUMENTS (Most people have assumed we need to keep this a secret NO WE DON'T, IT'S NOT A SECRET, RIGOL KNOW !! My argument is.... Make a scope that cannot be unlocked via software and charge it accordingly AND I'LL HAPPILY PAY FOR IT. For the Record, Rigol's Start up Logo on the DS2000A (and every other scope) I HAVE REMOVED THAT AND ADDED AN IMAGE FILE OF (Metallica's Master of Puppets Album Cover) POINT IN FACT i accessed the Memory and merely changed their logo for Metallica's Master of Puppets WHY ? BECAUSE IT LOOKS FUCKING COOL WHEN IT STARTS UP I also wanted to add an audio file for the song, but that was not possible BEFORE DOING THIS.... I approached Rigol and asked them "i want to add my own Logo or Picture upon start, How do i do that" THEIR REPLY "it can't be done" WELL, YES IT CAN !! AND I WORKED IT OUT and that's my own business Same concept with the upgrade it's my scope, i paid for it , You try to be dishonest, I'm not trying to be dishonest, i'm just trying to get the full use that my scope can give me. in the same way that i may change a resistor in my Multimeter to make the back light brighter in the same way that a person may want to tune their car engine I want the fullest potential out of my scope I didn't hide this from Rigol When they asked, i said to their faces Look, don't make me out to be the bad guy - I've been loyal for years - this is not malice - You took a punt that we wouldn't figure it out - We figured it out - Now... if you'd care about it at the DS2000 Series level YOU WOULD NOT HAVE INCLUDED THE SAME DECISION IN HIGHER GENERATIONS AND MODELS - BUT YOU DID , SO DON'T CRY ABOUT IT And that's as easy as it gets I would love to actually see Rigol Attempt to sue someone over unlocking the features in the scope (Considering who the audience are) NO WAY So even though the law must be considered and definitely don't be a dickhead and try to rip off the income of companies intentionally. But.. DO CONSIDER IF THEY ARE BEING MALICE TOWARDS US DO CONSIDER IF THEY APPROVE OF THIS DECISION DO CONSIDER WHY YOU ARE DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING that's my 2 cents on it I Invite Rigol or Emona to attempt to sue me on this matter and i happily admit that i have unlocked My DS2000A and MSO5000 I HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE so for the newbies..... don't worry about it and if by some Astronomical situation they get you for it HERE IS WHAT HAPPENS "Sir, Please bring in the unit for a firmware downgrade" and they'll just look at your receipt and downgrade it to the state at which you bought it at THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS YOU DON'T GO TO COURT AND BE SUED ON THE FIRST INSTANCE..... NO CHANCE !!
