In this video, I attempt to replicate a Tuatahi racing axe. As the name implies, the tuatahi racing axe is used in competition speed chopping. The axe head is keystone shaped, and, my axe measured 6.5" long x 6.5"wide at widest point. Scoops are ground out of the sidesof the head, presumably to give it more clearance and prevent binding. I forged my experimental replica from a single piece of 5160 spring steel. After forging to rough shape, it was refined on a grinder,then heat treated, polished and mounted on a wooden handle.
Although, I am clumsy and unpractised, the axe proved to be effective and lively.In my humble opinion , a very good design.

I've been waiting for someone to make this happen for years! Good on you sir! Keep it up please. It would be awesome to see you remake a bunch of popular older axes

Really, really nice axe. But dude!! That was some seriously casual chopping. You're lucky you had steel caps on, I could see that axe slipping and cutting off your toes. Stay safe. I enjoy your channel

For someone who isnt into the really detailed fine details and dimensions of a race ax, damn you showed some skill putting this together.

I’d kill for a double bit Tuatahi - racing axe (cross cutting grain) 15 degree bit one side and 22 degrees work axe (splitting long grain) bit the other side. Wings ground out on both bits.

Great video and beautiful axe, you did a much better job crafting the axe than chopping with it. To your defense, that limb was too light and needed to be fastened down in some way. New subscriber, love your videos.

A dude saw this video and has commissioned me to make one now, so thanks for that. (You cut will be I the mail :p) Out of curiosity, what is that hot cut made from? Holds it shape super well and you don't seem to cool it often/at all. Messed around with lots of different alloys myself too see how each work, so was wondering if you remembered. Cheers man.

Shiny visual is similar to Tuatahi but geometry is totally different. Tuatahi racing axes have hollow cheeks, low angle flat grind, thin behind the edge. It is just forging experiment for fun....so it doesn't matter if it have propper functional geometry or not. But main problem is your chopping technique. It's dumb and quite dangerous. Please have some self preservation.

That was some of the worst chopping ive ever seen... bro you almost cut off your toes multiple times... also you need to make the edge thinner because it glanced way to much and is dangerous
@ThakIronworks
@ThakIronworks 2 года назад
Are you able to email some more info on this. Chopping is outside my regular skill set and I would gladly take some more advice on this topic. info@thak.ca Thanks

@@ThakIronworks i don't use email but there are a few really great teachers on youtube. Ben Scott and kevin kevech. They both adopt techniques from competition choppers and have some good videos talking about that and general axe safety. I also wanted to say that your axe looks beautiful. Maybe a couple tweaks on the geometry and it would be a fantastic chopper. But the job you did creating it was awesome to watch.
