New Zealand's tuatara has been around since the time of the dinosaurs. Unfortunately, it is no longer found on the mainland, due to introduced predators. Watch this video to find out how the tuatara 'headstart' programme works. Meet the Locals is a partnership between DOC and TVNZ 6 and is distributed by Bush Telly with permission.

YD=Yankee Doodle, so the first word is feather. Can you think of anything else?

For those sorting newest first looking for John's comment, it's actually a reply to an old comment and hidden under "view all replies." If you don't want to scroll all the way down, here it is: "You know what else is cool? today's password. simple riddle, written by rosianna and me. in YD's cap when seeking warmth in a hurry, or randomly when you want a smile, or the impression of one it's what i'm making now."

DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS UNLESS YOU WANT THE PASSWORD TO BE SPOILED FOR YOU. If you want to figure it out yourself, here's John's hint he posted below. "You know what else is cool? today's password. simple riddle, written by rosianna and me. in YD's cap when seeking warmth in a hurry, or randomly when you want a smile, or the impression of one it's what i'm making now." AND SHAME ON EVERYONE POSTING THE ANSWERS DIRECTLY IN THE COMMENTS. Stop ruining it for everyone!

***** Dinosaurs for example have 3 toes not 5 like these ones. you can just read the wikipedia articles on dinosaurs and tuataras and compare en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinosaur en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuatara
@Quiestre
@Quiestre 9 лет назад
***** I know, if you would read the 2 wikis I posted later you would know that they are still no dinosaurs.
@EnDSchultz1
@EnDSchultz1 9 лет назад
***** Dinosaurs are archosaurs. Tuataras are lepidosaurs. They are on opposite ends of diapsida. Birds are living dinosaurs. Tuataras are not.
@EnDSchultz1
@EnDSchultz1 9 лет назад
***** Seems you're fundamentally right in that the leg structure is a taxonomic trait defining dinosaurs, but it is a nested one. They are *archosaurs* with an erect rather than splayed leg posture. This is why they are even related more closely to crocodiles and alligators than the tuatara, because crocodilians are the other main branch of archosauria. The exact taxonomic classification of pterosaurs seems to still be hotly debated due to current lack of more transitional forms. As for dimetrodon, it's not a dinosaur, but it wouldn't be one even IF it had an erect leg posture, because it's a synapsid. That puts it more in line with basal mammals than dinosaurs.

They are just a prehistoric sub group that branched off from dinosaurs, the modern descendants of dinosaurs are birds all dinosaurs otherwise are extinct.

So the Tuatara is supposedly millions of years old, but it goes endangered because of a rise of predators on the mainland. Am I the only one who doesn't think this is inconsistent?
@darkxoasis
@darkxoasis 10 лет назад
Crow22Darkness Even still, surely this species has seen harder circumstances if it has been around for millions of years. I know this introduction of species is unnatural, but a species as old as the Tuatara must have seen hard times before, right?
@peterk1643
@peterk1643 10 лет назад
mlk960 Probably, but never has hard as the last 800 years. They never had to face great predator threats since all those came in due to human activity, as you know the human factor is always the greatest threat to any ecosystem. Take the domestic animals and rats away and these animals will flourish again, never going to fully restore on the main islands though. Still, respect to NZ's governement for taking the hard ask upon them to preserve thousands of unique species like the tuatara.
@dimetilldeath
@dimetilldeath 10 лет назад
mlk960 Explain other hard times though . Think of it like this ,You go 200 million years with no natural predators then you suddenly get thousands of cat and dogs and ferrets which eat your eggs and humans which destroy your habitat ,combined with a very slow sexual maturity this is why they are endangered .If there where predators on new zealand beforehand there would be no kiwi ,no moa , no tuatara or no tui .This is exactly why flightless birds existed because of New Zealand's isolation and lack of predators .
@darkxoasis
@darkxoasis 10 лет назад
dimetilldeath So much natural phenomena occurs over 200 million years. Need one example? Whatever killed off the dinosaurs. Most likely it was severe climate change. If this thing was durable enough to survive what supposedly killed off most of the worlds species, how can it not survive the introduction of new species? I know it is drastic to artificially introduce species, but nature can be just as much so over a period that long.
@peterk1643
@peterk1643 10 лет назад
mlk960 Well first off, no one gave a definitive proof and conclusion of what happened over 65 millions ago, so we can only compare speculation with present facts. Most likely it was caused by many factors though, maybe asteroid(s) sparking violant geological activity triggering tsunamis, volcanos --> movement/creation of continents, creation of new land, blackened sky with volcanic ash leading to a worldwide cooldown which reptiles are extra weak against, killing most likely 95% of all reptiles, especially the enormous to medium ones (the big ones always go first). Possible giving cause to evolution of hair and feathers --> mammals and birds. In any case, I doubt New Zealand exsisted the way it does now back then, not to mention the animals who lived there...maybe tuatara did exist (small and isolated enough) but no doubt your 'hard times' will have caused it to adept and evolve to make it to our present day.
