This is similar to my reaction when Eddie Van Halen died. I did not care for his style of playing. I got allot of flack for that but I was honest and said I respected his playing but that was it. Different strokes for different folks.
It’s funny how music works, right? I get absolutely nothing from Catherine Wheel but most everything from Radiohead. I’m getting a lot from Willow Smith right now. Her new music it’s like a a soulful Radiohead. Really deep and forward moving. Her whole band slays, especially Mohini Dey’s bass playing. I really like your reviews and how passionate you are about the music like. I always give it a try, even if I intensely dislike some of it.

Mr. Higgins the problem with David for me was that he played without soul. Just my opinion. I am more of a maceo parker kind of funkhead. It's like people do not like when i say Michael Jackson was overated. But prince played and paid homage to all of his heroes.

We all hope you’re doing okay too! But I don’t know, you seem unhappy, depressed, even angry. When I watch your videos from 2017, you are a different person. Of course the thought of that orange turd would make any sane person sad and angry. But what do I know, it’s all very flat perception here on the interweb. I so agree with you about drinking. I was brought up around booze and taken to pubs as a kid. I now loath those places, the smell of beer, how people act after a few drinks. It's very boring to me and I just don't want anything to do with it.
Hey Dereck, This is my first hearing of Dave's passing. RIP. Would have to be in the mood for that approach to playing and style, though yes, also respected him much in general. Really liked that Sunday Night show he was part of years ago. Quite enjoyed his sopranino sax playing actually, though doesn't seem to be many examples of that on record. Will be trying out that Allen Ravenstine for sure. Appreciated as always. 🙂
I saw Björk at Radio City Music Hall on her Vespertine tour. Great show, but she barely uttered a word between songs, just “hello” when she came on stage, “Thank You” and “Goodbye” just before she left the stage at the end of the show. Lol.
Good morning from Madison, WI. I like your Sanborn comments. Other people's skills may impress on the skills, but maybe never the results of the skills. I feel that way about lots of bands and artists.
What really bugs me is that "smooth jazz" is for people that will never own a john coltrane or a miles davis record. Smooth jazz is something they hear on the radio at the supermarket and think it's a real musical genre. I'm sure David Sanborn was aware.
Hey Dereck, During the 80's I worked for a boss who loved smooth jazz, and through him I became quite familiar with that genre and its musicians. There were a couple of things I heard that I liked by DAVID SANBORN at the time, but it did not take me long to get very tired of the sameness of this music. I was though, very surprised at the amount of LP'S I like, where I would read in the credits where he played on a song or two, Take care Dereck
