Today I’m going to show you how to grow your very own tulips! Tulip bulbs can be ordered online at retailers like Etsy, eBay and Amazon or at your local nursery. All my tulip bulbs were ordered from Etsy & eBay. Tulips can be grown in a pot, raised garden bed or directly into the ground!
To find out your exact USDA growing zone, click the link below and enter your ZIP Code.

I looooove tulips! I can't seem to grow anything, but they are planted at the base of practically every tree in Greenwich Village, where I live, so the neighborhood is just blanketed with them come spring. I especially love those variegated ones

Great video! I really don't like the one minute music intros in most videos. Yours was to the point and informative. I don't know if you're still reading these comments, but I ordered a lot of bulbs from Holland. The problem is, they don't deliver them until the first week of November. I live in northern Wisconsin and the ground usually freezes by the last week of October and we get our first snow in mid-October. Can I plant the bulbs in containers and leave them indoors near a south-facing window for a couple weeks and then put them outside? My mudroom (where I would put them) usually hovers around 30 - 40 degrees at night, but outside it's already getting down in the teens.
@IsaacAlexanderDIY
@IsaacAlexanderDIY Год назад
Hey Mark, thank you so much for the feedback. That’s awesome that you ordered yours from Holland. So there’s a couple of notes with your predicament. You are correct in assuming that it is too late to plant your tulips. In Wisconsin, especially the northern part, September or early October is the best time to plant them. Once the ground freezes or temperatures are in the 30s, it is too late. If you’re going to plant the bulbs in containers, and you won’t move them from those containers (as in, you won’t transplant them from the containers into the ground) then I would wait until February to do what you have suggested. Tulips ideally need at least three months of cold temperatures that are below 50° consistently. So I would keep the tulip bulbs in the mudroom, in a paper bag, inside a cardboard box so they can remain dry and away from light. Then, in the first week of February, you could plant them in the planter pots that you had in mind. Move them outside as soon as you paint them. Essentially, what we want to do is “trick” the tulips into thinking that you transitioned from fall to winter. By keeping them in the mudroom, you are imitating fall temperatures. I’m not sure when spring begins for your area but if plants begin to sprout, say in April, then planting your bulbs in a pot and moving them outside on February 1st would give them enough time to sprout by April. Sorry for the long winded message, I hope it made sense what I was trying to convey. If you have any more questions just ask me and I’ll be more than happy to help

@IsaacAlexanderDIY
@IsaacAlexanderDIY 2 года назад
Glad you like my video, Jenny! :) I’m a bit confused though. Are you saying you have a tulip plant in a pot and the leaves are turning yellow? If so, It’s much too late for tulips to be blooming. Tulips bloom in early to mid spring. If your tulip hasn’t bloomed, it’s not going to bloom. Tulips need cold winters in the ground in order to be able to bloom in the spring. So at this point your tulip is just at the end of its life cycle. It’s dying because it’s no longer their time.

@@JayNJoy you’re in growing zone is 9a. It’s not the most ideal for tulips but they should be able to grow but treat them as an annual instead of leaving them in the ground for multiple years. In your zone, the tulips should be replanted every year but you should definitely plant them in the late autumn when temperatures get cool.

We are in the plateau area of Eastern Tennessee so it sounds like we should plant in mid November and my question is this… Should I leave them in the ground in our climate all year long or dig them up after they bloom and the leaves have turned brown in the spring? I’ve heard that the bulbs can be refrigerated in a paper bag. Thanks in advance 😁
@IsaacAlexanderDIY
@IsaacAlexanderDIY 2 года назад
Hey there! Yes I normally plant in early November so I would plant it before Nov 15 in your area. So the issue is that most bulbs planted but American gardeners aren’t suitable for multi year growing. If you leave them in the ground or pull them up, it won’t matter. The blooms for the next year will be much smaller and much slimmer. It won’t be as impressive and many of them won’t bloom at all. Most gardeners just have to buy new tulip bulbs each year

Today I plant 95 tulip bulbs in my garden Germany. Way late but on sale for 1 Euro. Should do fine as they will get the freezing weather necessary. Tip from North Alabama. Buy tulio bulbs in late November. Put you bulbs in Refrigerator for a few days then freezer for 3 days then back to Refrigerator for 3 days. Keep them dry.
@IsaacAlexanderDIY

Hello Jonathan! you should be good with planting them now. You are located at a higher temperate region than we are over here so it should be enough time for it to bloom in the spring. If they do come out, would love to see how they look

Hi Isaac, thanks for the really informative video. I’m in Australia, Zone 11a-b, warm temperate. Can I still grow tulips? It’s mid-Autumn here now and can still be a bit a warm, so I’m thinking maybe I should wait till next month to plant as it will be colder in May onwards. Our seasons are opposite to US, UK etc.
@IsaacAlexanderDIY
@IsaacAlexanderDIY 2 года назад
Hey there! Tulips need a period of cool dormancy, and Australia winters in your zone are just too warm to give tulips the resting period they need. However, you can grow tulips if you just think of them as annuals. The trick is to use bulbs that have been pre-chilled for two to four months, and then plant them in the yard in the winter. To pre-chill your bulbs, you need to put them in a box (shoe box or container that blocks out light) and keep them in your fridge for 2-4 months. The issue is that any fruits or veggies nearby will give off ethylene, which will reduce the significance of the blooms so place your bulbs at opposite ends from fruits and veggies. Doing it this way will trick the bulbs into thinking they’ve been in the ground during the winter and should bloom when planted
@Sundrop2204

I live in Southern California, can I grow tulips? I live on the beach, and the average temperatures are up to 76 fahrenheit in the summer months and 49 fahrenheit in the winter. Because of our close proximity to the beach, it gets quite foggy in the mornings.
@IsaacAlexanderDIY
@IsaacAlexanderDIY 2 года назад
Hello Eve, my apologies for the super late reply. I had not seen your comment before. Southern California does not have the climate necessary to successfully grow tulips. Tulips need temperatures that are below 40-50°F for several months so that they can bloom in the spring.
