Everyone, including myself, always yapped "Flair - Steamboat". And rightly so. However. Tully & Magnum were a DAMN close 2nd in the best NWA single matches. Classic. Absolute classic.
@artmeddaugh6669

Flair vs. Steamboat didn't have the intensity, the hatred, the blood and guts that Tully vs. Magnum had for six solid months in '85. Flair and Steamboat had a trilogy of outstanding wrestling matches, some of the best ever, but it doesn't stack up to the feud Tully and Magnum had in sheer hatred and brutality. Flair vs. Steamboat is a close 2nd.

Definitely! From 1988-1989, in the Then-WWF, Bobby "The Brain" Heenan managed them. They had really gelled, though, years earlier, in the old NWA, as part of the 4 Horsemen. Then, in 1991, Bobby "The Brain" Heenan managed a certain "Nature Boy"-Ric Flair! Of the original 4 Horsemen, the only original Horseman that Bobby "The Brain" Heenan never had the privilege of managing, was Ole Anderson. With Ole Anderson being the way that he was back then, which is grumpy, and, when you really pushed him, very ill-tempered, I really don't think that Bobby "The Brain" Heenan would've wanted to manage him!

Absolutely. Babyfaces exist to be cheated out of what's rightfully theirs, and Tully's presence made sure they didn't get too far from heel status. He was the yuppie accountant who people thought was undeserving of the success he got, usually by nefarious means or a distracted ref. People loved seeing his ass get kicked, but not before 'subverting justice' and taking titles. He was the sour guy to Flair's ebullient bro persona. Balance.

Admittedly,...I didn't "appreciate" Tully, back in the day. Perhaps it was because I was a pre-teen/teen at the time,...still in the days of KAYFABE TO THE MAX, and Tully was a heel. If I'm being completely honest, back THEN, I probably viewed Tully as being...."overrated". Obviously, this was NOT the case, and it was merely a "biased",..."misguided" opinion/view of an otherwise...."blind", young fan of wrestling. As a now-grown-man, I COMPLETELY understand/appreciate/realize just how *SUPER TALENTED* and INTEGRAL Tully was, not only as a singles wrestler, but even MORE SO to the 4 Horsemen, WCW/NWA, and Crockett promotions. You're a HELLUVA' talent, Tully, and a awesome person, PERIOD! God bless.
@tvtitlechampion3238
@tvtitlechampion3238 4 года назад
Actually, him being dismissed as 'not awesome enough' was part of what offended people when he met with success. He cheated, the ref gets distracted, or he gets counted out but the title doesn't change. All this leads to a big payoff down the road, Starcade or something. He did his job doing long running programs with both Dusty and Magnum, who specialized in chewing up their competition, being 'too awesome'.

Magnum and Tully were a lot like the Rock vs HHH in a way. They were both wanting to be the number one guy. Back then Magnum seemed to be "the Anointed One" at least before his wreck brought all that tragically to an end. They were building him to be the future of the NWA and later on WCW and odds are he would've been had it not been for that wreck. We'd be comparing him with Brett Hart and Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair as one of the greats of all time today had it not been for that wreck and anyone that watched him back in the day knows it. But I guess you could say that Tully was wanting that spot as much as Magnum did? They really did beat the crap out of one another when they got together. There was that one shoot they did at the end of the program, Magnum was doing a promo, Baby Doll comes out and confronts him, he grabs her and starts making out with her, then Tully comes running in and jumps on Magnum, they are rolling around on the floor punching at one another as hard and fast as they can as the show is coming to an end and the credits are showing the music is playing and you can hear knuckle meeting skull with those thumps with every shot they took at one another. There was nothing fake about that lol! Then decades later they are sitting side by side doing an interview with Apter and one guy is saying "Yeah I really kicked the hell out of you!" and the other responds back "YEAH BUT I WON THE MATCH!!" lol. That rivalry has always been there rather it was over the spot on the card, belts, women or what ever and it was real. Just like the Rock and HHH those guys never were friends and never will be. They may be able to be civil but those guys were two young lions trying to become the leader of the pride and the top of the card as young bucks and always tried to out do one another.

@artmeddaugh6669
@artmeddaugh6669 3 года назад
I'll take it back to the beginning when Tully and Magnum T.A. started to hate each others guts. Tully was defending the NWA World TV Title on television vs. Don Kernodle. Magnum was the U.S. Champ, and doing commentary on the match. Tully was getting beat up really bad during the match, and it looked like Kernodle was going to win the belt, and the fans were going crazy. At the end, Kernodle was going up to the top rope to deliver the finish, but Baby Doll grabbed his leg and made him fall down. The referee saw it and DQ'd Tully for her interference. Magnum couldn't stand it and ran into the ring. Baby Doll was also in the ring and stood between Tully and Magnum, getting in Magnum's face. Tully staggered over and sucker punched Magnum in the face. They exchanged some blows, Tully got the upper hand, and slingshot Magnum off the top rope. Magnum went crashing to the canvas, and then Tully pounced on Magnum and delivered fist after fist into Magnum's skull, before Dusty finally came in to save the day. Magnum was left bloodied and beaten by Tully Blanchard in the ring, and that was the first time I had seen that done to Magnum, and I'm glad my favorite wrestler, Tully Blanchard, did the honors! That kicked off the best feud in 1985, and one of the best feuds ever in the NWA.

If Tully wouldn't have gotten fired from the WWF and got to go back to WCW, I think MAYBE he sneaks in a world title reign. If Flair still went to the WWF, Tully maybe could have snuck one in somehow. Before Luger, Sting, and Vader got the title. I don't know when in that timeframe though. My point is u have certain guys FOR SURE capable of being a great world champ. But it just wasn't in the cards in the NWA-WCW or the WWF for Tully. When the AWA was strong, Tully FOR SURE could have been a great world champ up there though. Their roster wasn't as deep EVEN THOUGH they still had a great roster in the mid 80's. Instead of putting the belt on a loose cannon like Hansen they couldn't trust, Tully could have beaten Martel in that spot. But then again to be frank, I think I would have RATHER BEEN in the NWA as US Champ INSTEAD of being the AWA World Champ! LOL JCP OVERALL was the best wrestling company on the planet at that time. WWF was the most successful and mainstream no doubt. But JCP and Mid South were the top two companies IN TERMS of what old school pro wrestling was all about in the mid 80's!

Joe, in the full cut of this interview, he talks about how he was the only wrestler he knew of to test positive for drugs who then got booted out and never re-signed by WWF. Then he talks about how God used what he thought was a bad thing for good. He certainly didn't come across as someone who was bitter about it, and hasn't faked it to some great advantage to himself. "They proved never died on the cross".....no, no one has "proved" that, neither "they" nor anyone else, nor can anyone even make a semi-rational claim as such. We have numerous 2000 year old books that say he did, and a number of ancient non-Christian historians who attest that he did. There are very few events from the ancient world for which we have as much evidence. Let go of your delusions.
