Tuning up a generator with oil change, cleaning carburetor, Preparing for a Hurricane in Florida.
We have had this generator sitting in storage for over a year. There was old oil in the system. I show the steps needed to make sure the generator starts up without damaging the motor. We do an oil change. I check the gas tank. We add oil into the spark plug port. It is important to make sure the piston moves freely and doesn't damage the block. I add 1 tsp of oil and rotate the motor with the pull cord 3 times to make sure engine rotates freely. I also go through the steps of removing the carburetor and clearing out the jets to make sure fuel flow correctly.
I didn't have to use carburetor cleaner because the carburetor was pretty clean when I opened up the float bowl. If you have buildup or gunk inside, make sure you use a carburetor cleaner to clear all the orifices in the carburetor. My spark plug was also in good condition, so I did not have to change the spark plug. I simply removed the spark plug to put oil in the cylinder and reinstalled the old spark plug. All of my fuel lines were in good condition and did not have to be changed.
