Yeah, the ESC settings can have a big impact on performance. I'm not an expert in ESCs, but here are a few observations about startup/ramp-up power from my own experience: 1) Micro motors tend to need higher startup power, especially the really tiny motors like on whoops. In fact, many BNF whoops have an issue where the motors won't always start spinning when you arm. Instead, one or two motors might just twitch at first, but if they do start spinning, then the drone will work just fine. Increasing startup power will almost always fix this problem. Some whoops go as high as 1.5 for the startup power (something I would not recommend on larger drones). 2) If the prop-to-motor ratio is high (big prop, undersized motor) then increasing the startup/rampup power can help give the motor better control of the prop, especially in low throttle situations. I guess it just needs more oomph to get the relatively large prop to change speeds. 3) However, increasing starup/rampup power also increases electrical noise which propagates back from the ESCs into the rest of the electrical system. Thus, increasing startup/rampup power may make interference lines in analog video get worse, or they might require a bigger capacitor to compensate. 4) In the most extreme cases, a high startup/rampup power can cause power spikes that are so large that they actually trigger a reboot of the ESC. You will know the ESC rebooted if you hear the startup tones again. Needless to say, the drone is going to crash. This is a common cause of the "death spiral" behavior. For example, I had a 4S 5" drone that would fly fine if I was gentle on the sticks, but if I tried to do a snappy roll then the drone would spin wildly out of control and crash. Lowering the starup power fixed it. On that drone I think I had to take it all the way down to 0.25.

Well this all explains my issie ive had on a micro ive tried fix and re calibrate, gonna try this on it tomorrow morning, fingers crossed and thank you gentlemen very much. Uve all taught me so much!

For pure flight performance you are correct, however you do this at a large risk of blowing up components while drastically reducing your battery life. When running very overpropped or over kv this will keep your motors cooler and not on fire.

@MAD GRUMPYMAN I have dodged a few bullets but also been raked over the coals suddenly. Have come to the conclusion there is a good chance I am dying alone and as the end of my line. Ended badly enough but it could have ended even worse had I married her and then she suddenly had a change of heart. At least I still have my retirement intact.

switched to 0.125 on my 3" cinewhoop... and now motors are barely even warm. went from super hot to barely warm, on a hover test. thank you so much

Damn you! I always treated ESC-settings as an afterthought when setting up my quads and running into problems like desyncing or oscillations. Now I realized I have to treat it as a first class citizen in my tuning process and adds at least one more iteration to my loop (most likely more till I get a feeling for it). Thank you for the input!

Last time I went on a hike and carried a bottled water. I noticed my shoe was untied. I set my water bottle down. Bent over, tied my shoe. As I put my hand on my water bottle to pick it up. @@Kabab I was being serious. I was having issues with the current bells and bent a shaft. You gave me that replacement set of bells Sunday and I figured out the issues with fettec and it does fly amazing now. I wont really need the replacement bells that 'fix' the issue without changing ESC settings. The issue being I was running Dshot and not Fettec Onewire. Dshot worked great with Steele motors, but not your motors. So i was glad it was an easy fix and not tuning a bunch of stuff.

I just want to tell you that it has helped tremendously in my 3” Jacks Splash heavier cinewhoop. I have small 1408 motors and they were always hot as heck after even a short flight indoors. I’ve tried fighting filters and PID’s and they haven’t helped much, after lowering the motor timing the motors came down barely warm! Thank you @kababfpv

Oh Bob, having been flying quads since the KKmulticopter fc days (where tuning relied on 3 pots to dial) i can totally relate to your tuning experience. With family and work there really aren't enough hours in the day! So greatful for all the knowledge you share, i thoroughly enjoy your content and always feel i learn something, and useful knowledge at that 😊👊🏼 I also floss more and encourage my children to do the same 😁

Thanks for pointing this out! You're also totally right about typical larger craft (6" & 7"), they could actually be a fair bit heavier relatively in the same way a micro needs to be lighter.

This video came just in time. I just bought your 2203/4 2800kv motors for my Squirt v2. Had real bad yaw twitches but getting better when increasing Ramp Up from 50% to 75%. It still twitches but less than before.

My old beater Martian 220/RS2205 is overweight , underpowered , and had tons of propwash. I just increased ramp up power by one notch and the propwash is all but gone! Now it's just overweight, underpowered, and smooth :)

Nice walking with you. I have a 3 inch quad that flies great at 4s (1507 and 3800kv) but with hot motors. And a 7 inch quad that can improve it's performance. Will try your ESC tips. And will keep flossing at least twice a day as usual. Thanks, doc!

I am guessing this is part of my tuning issues with my 10inch when I tried 900kb 2814 motors on 6s. Off the ground at 15% throttle and 60+mph at 50% throttle. Had I knocked the ramp up down a bit I may have settled in on a better tune. When I went to 640kv 3115 motors the tune was a beautiful tune that flew amazingly on 6s.

I had something very similar to this on the TP4 arms with some 1404s I was trying to run to offset carrying a DJI setup. I couldn’t tune it out and gave up on it, chalked it up to frame/arm resonance. Maybe its time to throw it back together and see if this can help it out.

@@matthieukhubbens2489 mine is under-powered with 2047 1700kv Tri-Prop 6S. HQ 7x4x3 are too heavy, but my favorite for haul-a$$. APC 6" are very light and spin up super-quick, but bend too easily. GemFan 6042 trip-prop is a balance of strength and weight. not perfect, but a fair match for my fly-style. i set my ramp-up at 30%. something else to consider is PWM freq. while 48khz is ultra smooth, such may have less torque to push a bigger prop at low throttle. good luck!

This is an awesome video, thank you for making it. I just recently built a 6S 5" with a T-Motor ESC, and I was getting some random de-syncs. One of the settings that I did adjust (lower) is rampup power and I haven't had the issue return since then. I was previously unaware that T-Motor ESCs have a higher rampup power rating than normal.

What did you end up setting it on at the end? You did not mention what ESC exactly and what RP worked for you at the end. I am having these exact same issues with T-Motor Velox V50A. It flies amazingly, but as soon as I try to combine couple of rolls, loops, it goes crazy.

@@Seii-FPV My issue ended up being something else altogether after all. While using the SpeedyBee Betaflight tuning app on my phone, I accidentally put a small value in the 'Dynamic Idle Value' tab. I kept chasing my tail until I finally noticed it. Mega noob mistake. The first thing that I would do in your case is to check your JST connection, and possibly try a new cable, as this is a culprit that's easily overlooked.

@@michaelc5027 - finally! In my case, it's completely solved with lowering the Rampup power from 50% down to 25% and setting demag compensation to High. I pulled its soul out the other day, I was so into it, I started thinking I want it to crash just to not get disappointed if it happens. And it didn't! For the first time I am enjoying this combo (T-motor Velox V50A and Rush Blade F722 HD). I'm on my 8th battery pack with this custom build, did everything that would 100% cause desync before, and I did it multiple times... quad flies super smooth and I can even tell by the sound of motors that it's finally fixed. I also installed follow cam to monitor what's happening with motors and props in case of desync.

UAVtech’s 2 pack slider tune video was super helpful for me. I would say give that a shot if you haven’t already. Super useful info, I’ll definitely have to start messing with ramp up power!

I've tried following his ways. I can get something better than default but sure can't get near perfect. I'm usually having issues outside pids that need to be addressed first. If you build a run of the mill 5", it should work but anything outside the norm could have issues

@@EnzoM His methods are good, there's just more going on than the specific group of videos that you might refer to in your mission to tune something. The more basic pid tuning I do, the more I realize that the sweet spot for pids is really quite large as long as all the other stuff is right. Primarily esc settings and noise management.

Sometimes on some of my 6S 5 inch quads, I would have one of the motor not responding as fast as the others when I slam the throttle from like 30% to 100% very rapidly. It feels like one of the motors has a slight hesitation while the others are going full throttle very fast, then the flight controller reacts by cutting the power to the motors that spin faster so that the quad doesn’t flip. It’s almost like the traction control on a car when you try to accelerate too fast on a slippery surface. And it turns out that by slightly decreasing the startup power it solved the problem.

@12:00 you get into somethi g that may explain an issue I had with a quad 2-3 years ago that I could never figure out. That sticking in a yaw where the quad is right on the fringe of being a fly away while also having hot motors. Guessing it is something that is not just tune but also in the ramp up.

I was have a "discussion" (read: argument) that since Blheli_S configuration tweaks for non-Blheli_32 esc like Bluejay, etc... allowing moves to the PWM to higher values, that is when people started to see some of the whoop size motors not starting from a dead start. My argument is that the smaller pulse width of 48 is having trouble saturating the cores with enough magnetic energy to overcome the inertia and friction from a dead start. Thoughts?

That could be part of it. The other part is that it's just a lower time 'on' for each pulse so it's just lighter. This goes for breaking too

hi bob in your testing what have you found to typically be your higher and lower values when playing around with rampup? I've reduced the rampup to .125 in the past on different quads but never increased over 0.5

It entirely depends on the quad unfortunately. Most quads are usually fine around defaults but depending on what your doing, more or less is beneficial

a few days ago i tried to learn about this feature and got as far as thinking 'startup power' was something that helped throw the props from 0rpm when a quad arms , also cannot wait to build the cinesplore with fpvcycle 3450kv , have you found the cinesplore to benefit from higher/lower than default startup power with the jhemcu board ? thanks for making the video its much appreciated

@@Kabab interesting how the high kv motors on 6s compare with 4s in flight , I wonder at what difference in noise / flight time ect occuring from the change in windings , I plan on using 4s and eventually 3s 1100mah packs with mine , likely il fly the cinesplore onstage at some concerts so the lower noise level will be perfect , thanks 👍👍

Don't do this yourself - LOL, it's me. Just at yesterday flew 3" in Acro around my apartment by accident (was convinced that Angle mode is on). Didn't broke anything. Although one room still have 3 years old notches in ceiling from frame and props :)

I have a question. I have a 7 inch drone build with relatively hot motors after hovering the drone. What filter / slider should I tune to make it cooler. Is there an easy fix? I'm using the supafly 7 inch tune on betaflight. 6S 2807 1300kv motors.

If you have a black box chip on your FC, run a gyro scaled log and see what the noise looks like. 7" crafts are particularly frustrating however because they wobble in the lower frequencies when they're high powered. The low frequencies are hard to manage because that's what used to control the craft

Whatever the default is. The issue is that you don't know if that default is low or high for the setup and it changes from esc to esc even within a single brand

I think I might try increased ramp up in small increments on a 3 inch that I have with 1404s which are slightly under powered. If this works, could it also have an effect on prop wash handling?

Yes it can help prop wash handling. Can also cause flutters. Be ready on the disarm

I have always set my ramp up to .18 - .25 I have argued many times with Preston Garrison how ramp up can cause all sorts of woe if set too high. He said it would not effect anything negatively and I told him he was wrong. Ramp up too high can burn your quads motor/s up and make tuning a pain in the ass for some builds. You will get amp spikes if set way too high.

From what I’m seeing high mhz f3 esc have less torque than standard f0 or 48mhz esc. So maybe add RampUp should add a little bit of torque? I’m talking about Tekko32 65Metal v2 (108mhz) and Rush 168mhz

Perhaps this will help me with my 4 inch toothpick build. Dang thing flutters horribly on high throttle. Flies great low throttle. Flying it on 4s but toned down 60% on motor outputs. Only way I can make it flyable.

Anyone have a cli dump/tune for the iFlight Titian XL5 or the HGLRC Wind5? The wind came to me soooo badly tuned its damn near unflyable! Every flip or roll I do it wants to fall backwards diagonally The Titan came with an excellent tune To thins day one of the best quads I’ve ever flown but I ended up frying the stack when the balance port wires accidentally got caught in the props I put the exact stack back in there and got it working pretty good but it’s not as locked in as the tune it comes with If anyone has some good tunes for these quads lmk Thanks!

I've got a Geprc Cinestyle with 1507 Motors. It flies great with 48 khz and BF 4.3 but when I go full throttle the kwad shakes hard. No death spiral. Looks like microseconds motorstops?! Can't really describe it. Doesn't seen this before. Could it be rampup power?

Sounds like a noise issue. Try 24k. It changes the noise profile. You could lower ramp up by one notch too and see how it responds

I was wondering what trail that was. It looked familiar. My girls last name is rivas. We normally hike griffith to the wisdom tree past the hollywood sign. Good spot to fly and it's a pain getting there with all the gear but like they say the harder the hike the better the view.

Griffith is an unfortunately ugly place to hike. I'm not totally sure why it's so popular once you get over the view. This hike is temescol canyon in the palisades. It's my favorite area around LA

@@Kabab I know that trail. It's called the rivas trail. But you know by now one mans trash is another's mantel piece. I went to hollywood and fairfax high so that was our get away growing up. I may be biased but while I stand next to you in most cases when it comes to drones I highly disagree in the hiking department. They all have many hiking trails so it all depends on the route you took. Our truths are our opinion and when that blue moon comes and the sky's are clear, my route to the top is the one thing that still leaves me in awe of this city. Especially when the sun is setting. Don't get me wrong temescal is beautiful and so is malibu but then again I find them all that way. Except for runyon. HA!

Just built a tp3 varient with the new amax 1303 5000kv, I ordered them a few days before the new fpvcyle 1304s dropped . And I’ve tried countless firmwares 3.5.7, 4.2 with and without rpm, emuflight. All all with a wide range of changes in filter settings and pid settings along with 24,48,96khz and I still get that robotic noise and super funky wobbles and oscillations and that prop flutter that wants to shoot you to the moon. Super low pids helps a little but like you said it flies like crap. Gonna try to drop the startup power down like you suggested. It’s a new board also from your store. I used the larger cap that came with it , a 330 I believe and I just took it off and put a 440 on I believe and haven’t tried it yet. Hopefully the larger cap/ lower startup power do the trick. Been having such bad luck with these micro builds. My spec tp3 is just absolutely amazing though.

Yeah the 1304 we have now has a lot of the same issues and makes it a bit challenging to tune. We're gonna make the 1303 available again in the future because it just works so well without any hassle. In your specific case, lower ramp up power will help but also lower timing could help.

@@Kabab yeah I tried everything. Swapped out the fc and it flies amazing now. Guess I got a bad fc . I even tossed multiple caps on the board along with super low esc motor ramp up and still super bad . And the motors sounded so bad

I tried setting my ramp-up to 25 on my Beta95 and half the time one motor won't start spinning properly when I arm. Almost like there's a phase disconnected. Usually it does start after a few seconds... weird shit

If it's too low that's the issue you run into. You could probably get better performance by increasing the ramp time on that quad

it completely depends on the quad. Lower if you're having noise and PID tuning issues that make you feel like you need to lower the PIDs. Increase it if the quad is overweight or under powered to see if you can get better performance from the PIDs you've got

@@Kabab I have flown yesterday and forgot to post this comment, so here I am to thank you very much. Everybody is saying "if you have desync, lower startup power" and I have tried every setting in the blheli configurator under 0.50 even with different timings... I was frustrated and I had new motors put on when I have read your comment.....so I couldn't resist and put the motors back xD, set startup power to 0.75 and got two packs without any issue. Only one bell flew off so the second pack was just cruising lol. But it looks very promising. It flew very well. Thank you.

@@Kabab Hey, I have returned from the field and it's really ....interesting I'll say. I have flown a half of battery and then I got a normal desync, just one arm dip and I'm down, not the freak-out as it was doing before. That was on 1.00 power, so I tried 0.75 again and it desynced too. Motors were cool but sound was little odd and then I noticed I have the wrong pid profile with who-knows-what tune and then it flew "better" or more "as expected" .....well then. I hesitated to increase the startup power to 1.25 so I tried timings: MediumHigh - desynced after a while, MediumLow - desync after first flip and the last pack I ran High and it was fine. Thinking about putting the startup power to 1.25 to be sure. I am a little bit confident I'll have finally quad I can depend on lol. I have 60 hours in Liftoff but barely nothing IRL...only some theoretical knowledge. It's not great how little information is there on "ESC tuning". I have mobula7 which have flown terribly from the box and I have pid tuned it as much as I could and it just barely could fly ok. Just wobble after wobble and filters to the left. Yeah, startup power was at 1.00 and flashing blheli S firmware does not reset it to defaults so I turned it down to 0.50 and now it flies so good! I know, I sometimes talk too much but thank you! Maybe you don't tune much but this was the best tuning advice I've ever got.

The frame has zero flex or motion to it. The arms all interlock together very tightly for a solid structure. That tension sound is actually one of the issues because vibrations travel down the arms and cause everything to resonate....but if you stop the vibrations from happening in the first place, it's not an issues. Or if you're running a drivetrain that's just too weak to even begin to cause those sorts of vibrations it doesn't matter. 2004 would never have any issues. 2204's and the 2304's I'm about to put on here are another story

@@ibnfpv Ahh ok, yes, but if you reduce motor output in betaflight is like you reduce the kv of the motor, so if i have to reduce my 1950kv to like 90% is like to have a 1750kv...so maybe is better to buy directly 1750kv and is sure more efficient too. I have a problem with my 1950kv and i now have motor output to 90% and is "flyable" but i dont like this, system I dont understand how people can fly 6s even with 2500kv without problem, my gyro go crazy even with 1950

@@dronetube8477 yes this is not ideal you always want to buy. The kv for the prop ,volt ,wight. Combo There is a pendently with motor output as the KV is “lowered” the efficiency is still of high KV motors as this is a physical factor you cannot change in software I say lower to give the too much high kv motor fair chance of preventing desyncs and other issues to the system
