With this video, you can tune your 12 string guitar. Simply listen to the notes played, and match them on your guitar. For more information about 12 string tuning, as well as the best apps and plugins to help you. Go to meteoritesound...
This is the easy and intuitive way, by tuning the strings in the order of 1 through 12. The guitar used was tuned with extreme precision and double-checked. The sound was compressed in order to give the player a lengthier tone, which makes tuning easier.

A knowledgeable guitar technician may tell you *not* to tune a 12-string to standard pitch - way too much tension on the neck, and this extra tension will cause the neck to warp. That's why you see a lot of used 12-string guitars with warped necks. Best advice is to tune it down a whole step D-G-C-F-A-D. Use a designated 12-string capo on the 2nd fret if you need to play in standard tuning.

Good advice. Have heard of this problem before. 12-String guitars are too precious to get their necks bent.

@@oscarsh2909 My newly-acquired 20-year old Guild Jumbo 12-string is off to the luthier for a heat press, in an attempt to correct the action. The previous owner played it at standard pitch all those years. I should have inquired prior to buying it.

I've heard this, but I have an acoustic Ovation 12 string. It has always been tuned to standard pitch. I prefer playing it that way. The neck is as straight as an arrow. Never a problem. I haven't even had to adjust the action on this guitar. It plays like a dream. It's not going anywhere. I'm keeping this until they carry me away. 23 years of service!!!! Maybe this is a rarity, but it's the only experience I have with an acoustic 12 string. I also have an electric Danelectro 12. I use it the same way. 7 years with me and no issues to date.

Same mate. I have a Danelectro 12-string (love it), and got an Ovation legend last Christmas. Thing came in tune, I play it most days, and I still haven’t had to retune! Such a beautiful, unique sound out of each guitar

I haven't played over 35yrs. Thank you for this easy step. No long talking just straight to the cords. Time to start playing again. Cut the nails and suffer the burning of the fingertips all worthwhile 😉
@meteoritesound
@meteoritesound Год назад
Wow, 35 years is a long time. Well, it's a good time to go at it again, with all the stress of a rapidly changing world, the guitar is an untouched sanctuary. And I know the feeling with the fingernails, it's a constant struggle. I found it's good to keep them lengthy on the hand that does the picking/strumming because it's like you have a guitar pick on every finger :) Also, 12-string guitars actually go nicer on the fingertips after a while. Initially, it might hurt, but when your fingers are ready, the force is distributed more evenly because it's double the strings and they won't "cut" into the fingers as much. I'm not a nerd or anything, but I've been playing a lot. Have an awesome day and thanks for expressing your gratitude! 🥰

@@ihitafel You can get them and put them on when you start feeling uncomfortable. It might take you a little longer to get those hardened fingertips. But the pain can be really discouraging, and I sure would have wanted a few of these in the beginning! 😉

@pastelskies8466
@pastelskies8466 Год назад
It's easy. On the wider low E string, go up to the 12th fret. That's what an octave higher sounds like. Now tune the skinnier low E string to that. The first 4 bronze wound skinny strings are an octave up, the last 4 steel are tuned the same.

@lucydayLucida

@@obg120 I've been having similar problems being new to the 12 string and not having played at all since my teens. I don't have the ear to tune anymore. I believe the 4 higher strings are the same as a 6 string and the paired string on the 12 just matches it's partner. Meaning the octave difference in the pairs only applies to the 2 bass strings E and B. Hope that helps. I've found a couple of 12 string tuning apps but the free versions don't give that functionality. I'm also having problems with some tuners seemingly maybe due to the resonance of the paired string while tuning its mate. The gorgeous sound of the guitar does make the struggle worth it and your ear will develop in time to not need assistance.

The G string on a 12 string is a common string to break, especially if you go just a little too high. I just tune my 12 string down a half step and put a capo on the first fret. I don't know how much truth there is to it, but I heard a long time ago that tuning a 12 string to EADGBE puts over 90 lbs of pressure on the neck of the guitar, so I tune mine down a half step, it prevents broken strings and has a lower deeper tone. It'll help your guitar last longer. I only paid 99.00 for my Rogue 12 string but it sounds like a 1200.00 guitar. I have over 7 guitars but the 12 string is one of the best under 100.00 bargains I've ever found. I'm happy with it. I agree with Patrick Kennedy, tune it down a full step or a half step, you won't be sorry.

@meteoritesound
@meteoritesound 2 года назад
12 String Strings are usually bought in packs of 12. I've personally never seen them sold separately. It's a good idea to always buy an extra pack because strings do snap from time to time, and many guitar players will replace all of their strings when one string snaps. But if you can get it separately it would be called the high A string or A3.
