Great and useful advice. If you are going to tune your 12-string down a whole step to D, I would recommend getting 012. gauge strings. Lighter strings will be a bit flimsy when tuned down due to the lack of tension. Also remember to tune your 12-string every time you place the capo on a different fret (it will throw it somewhat out of tune..) Another important tip (for any acoustic guitar player) is to always monitor the humidity where the guitar is stored. Keep it between 45-55% RH ideally, to avoid any prolonged damage (drying out, bulging). And always store it in it's case when it's not used!

Hey Huell. You touched on something I totally neglected. String gauge. You couldn't be more right on the money. The funny thing is I'm so picky when it comes to string gauges for my electrics. I like 8s for my Tele but heavier bottom strings, ultra light all the way through on the LP, and I use 10s for my Carvin Semi-Hollow, yet I completely neglected discussing in my tips video on the 12 string. I have a three room basement studio where I film the videos, teach, and produce music and luckily the humidity is naturally good down here. Even the forced air heat in the winter doesn't dry things out too badly. I need to do a better job of putting my guitars back in cases though. If for no other reason than the fact that after one sweaty playing session I need to restring if I forget to wipe down. An expensive, bad habit. I appreciate you sharing your tips with me. I hope you have a great afternoon. Check out my latest upload if you have time LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED ON A 12-STRING ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E8ZUO4W15Jk.html. If not, no worries. May I ask you Huel, when you say "tune your 12 every time you use the capo". Do you mean tune it with capo on, ir re-tune it AFTER you capo & remove. I'm asking because my Takamine 12, 1982 is a gem to play. It seems to hold its' tune quite well. However, I do sometimes have to "tune in" to itself WITH the capo on! Is this normal with 12's? You seem incredibly knowledgeable!! Impressive. AND, 8 min. Axe- thank you for the lessons on the 12. Really talented & I'm grateful. Thanks ya'll!! - Kim-

When I first started playing 12 string I found that 12 string is a great way to get used to using finger and thumb picks. If you practice using the finger and thumb picks on 12 string, when you try it on a 6-string you're like a master of it. It's kind of like running with weights when you take the weights off everything seems easier.

I've been using thin picks for over 40 years,and when doing string changes,I use a #2 graphite pencil in the nut slots and wipe off after.It acts as a lubricant and prevents "ping" My higher end 12 strings (Guild and Martin) I've kept tuned to concert pitch for years with no problems ever. They are built to take the tension.But tuning down is a good idea with a capo too. Have a great weekend!

Glad to find your video. Many moons ago, played brother's 12-string, too chunky for my hands. Fast forward, I got lucky and picked up a Seagull 12+ at an estate sale (only $59). Man, after spiffing it up, that thing is like butter in my hands. Your video gave me some very nice tips on various aspects of playing. Really liked you comment on the pick thickness...after playing with at thicker (1 mm) pick, I accidentally picked up a .60 mm pick and the sound sprang to life. I also found out I like the Dunlap Max-Grip picks, the pick doesn't flip out of my fingers as easily on the 12-strings. Again, great video!!

@@8MinuteAxe 12 String Guitars are pretty strong. 12 String Guitar sets come in a plethora of Gauges & materials. For E Standard Tuning a set of 10s (or even thinner like 8s which Ernie Ball makes an 8 Gauge Nickel Wound 12 String set essentially Ultra Lights) because the thinner strings will put less tension on the top, minimize the breakage (especially on that High G which is only a step below the A String on a Tenor Guitar, the Octave4Plus .006 B4 String is under fairly low tension to prevent breakage & is a step above the A String on a Tenor Guitar giving you more shimmer), give you a more equal sound, & make it easier to play faster.

Hey Frank. Thanks for that. I've heard that some people do that. I forgot to mention and adhere to the most important tip. Buy a decent 12 string. The Ibanez is going back. All the reviews were lies or people with really low expectations! It plays and sounds exactly like I'd expect a $300 guitar to play and sound. I'm on the hunt again. Maybe the Taylor 150e. More likely a mid priced ($650ish) Guild or Takamine. I really appreciate you watching and for your suggestion. Have a great day and take care! -Mark

@@8MinuteAxe the one thing my twelve lacks is electronics. Between my son and I (all of which, I really purchased over the years) have a the ebony Tak EF 341 & 381 12string, Gibson 1997 CL 20, 2007 Tak Santa Fe, and of course the F400. Of all of these guitars the F400 is the only one without electronics and neither 12 has a built in tuner. That's the 1 thing I really wanted in my next 12 before I bought the F400. I'm in love with the EF400SCE but the near $2000 price tag is a little (sarcasm "a lot") out my price range. Lol

@@8MinuteAxe The High G is a .009 or thinner so that it breaks less easily. The lightest gauge of 12 String Guitar Strings like those 8's will save lots of tension.
@forni9853
@forni9853 3 года назад
When 12 string guitars first became popular most players tuned down one half or one whole step because the tension of adding six more strings sometimes exceeded the bracing of the acoustic guitars.Today's 12 string acoustic guitars have improved build and bracing that makes tuning down optional. Today's 12 string acoustic guitars willl last for a long time even if you tune to standard tuning.

There was an amazing amount of good information in that video. Sometimes I tune my 12-string down a whole step, sometimes not. Maybe I can win one of your Vangoa giveaways and keep one 12-string tuned down and one at regular EADGBE. I agree that sus chords sound fantastic. I do Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" on my 12-string and that A sus chord is positively haunting.

@@8MinuteAxe I hope that you changed your mind on the Taylor. In my opinion Taylors are not good 12-strings. I know I know Taylor is a great brand (which I agree with) and are known for making great 12-strings, but I strongly disagree. Why? One: they don't growl they don't have a personality that says, "I'm here. Now do something!" Two: their octaves are too subtle you should be able to hear them on the lower strings. You want to hear a great 12-string listen to Daddy Stovepipe. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bA5pVLPV760.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LbK2f2mEkgc.html

Hey Rich. Yeah, it definitely opens up a lot of possibilities and I would think for someone like yourself who is early in your playing career, it would breathe new life into your repertoire. I just got the Ibanez I'm playing in the video and I'll tell you, it's very easy to play. The string sets are much closer together than my other 12 string (I'm borrowing the natural wood top Mitchell from one of my students). That being said, it has a rather thin, tinny sound which I'm sure has a lot to do with the fact that it has a cutaway and a mid depth body, but also because it's definitely a cheaply made instrument. I'm going to return it and explore my options in the next price range ($450-$600ish). For what I do, it doesn't make sense to go all in but I also don't want to waste money money on something I'll never play. Let me know if you need help with any riffs, tunes, or theory. Good advice! I might add: try a thumb pick. It takes some getting used to, but it actually makes any acoustic guitar louder! Also, tune the first two pair of strings E and B) slightly out of tune with each other. this gives the guitar more of what it already has, and makes a kind of “chorusing” sound. Raise one E slightly high, and the other slightly low. Do the same with the pair of B strings! Not too much, or it will really be out of tune, but just ever so slightly. Why do you think a string ensemble sounds so rich; they are just ever so slightly out of tune with each other; not on purpose, but that is the natural way they tune and perform.

I really appreciate that. Trust me when I say that I am very grateful for the success I've had. Everyone told me that it's impossible to crack into You Tube so my plan was/is simple. Upload videos that I'm passionate about and that (hopefully) have some entertainment value. Genuinely engage with every single viewer (subscriber or not). Add value as much as possible. There are a lot of people on here that do guitar videos but very few continue to engage after reaching 1000 subs. At least that's been my experience. I get a lot of canned responses. I hate it when I write something thoughtful to a youtuber (usually because I'm excited about a particular video) and I get a thanks man in return. If someone takes the time to engage with me, I will do whatever I can to promote his/her channel. There's nothing wrong with that but that's where I'd like to think I add value. My viewers know that I return every email and respond to every comment. I'd like to think that I've built my subscriber base one at a time. It's very time consuming but if you don't like talking to the people that are watching your videos, you probably shouldn't be doing it. I won't forget the first 5 months when I had 104 subs and half were my friends. If I ever get to a point where it's simply impossible to make videos and respond to everyone then I'll get someone to help me with the videos and continue to respond personally. This connection is especially important when things aren't going well. Last week was a crappy week for the channel and all I needed to do to put things into perspective, was to read some of the nice comments and emails. I'm sorry for the novel. I do appreciate and value your time very much and I sincerely thank you for your comment. I hope you have a great evening. Take care and be well! -Mark

All good stuff. If I am not going to play the 12 string for a few weeks I will detune it until I am ready to play it again. I typically play it a half step low and capo. If for some reason I need to move the capo I will double check my tuning at that point. The strings are under a lot of pressure as you know and even moving the capo can change things quite a bit. I don’t buy cheap strings. They are just not worth it. Good strings will out last cheap one. And I alway wipe down the strings after I play. I really don’t want that moisture in the case. Keep up the good work.

Great point. The funny thing is that with my electrics I'm so picky about my string gauge. I use 8s on my LP, 8.5 on my tele, and 10s on my Carvin (well, that's more because of an intonation thing it's an AE185 with an acoustic bridge). I put 9s on the Ibanez 12 but then I sent it back. I wonder if they'll realize when they get it back that it has super light strings. LOL. Anyway, thanks again for the feedback. -Mark

I use a .73 mm Dunlop Jazz III pick. I like a little bit of flex in a pick but it’s still heavy enough for fast response. I found that Elixer strings last the longest and are easier to tune. I’ve had my 12 string guitar since 1997 and have tried a lot of strings.
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe 4 года назад
Hey Musk Rat. I switched to the .73 myself. I agree with your assessment exactly. I use a 1.2 for my electric and a .88 for my acoustic. Two other viewers suggested a .35 and .5. The .35 is like paper and the .5 gives too much and I lose accuracy. I need to try Elixer again. I sweat a lot and I found I didn't like the feel of the coating but I go through so many strings. A lot of times I'll finish a lesson and when I'm walking the student out of my house, I forget to wipe strings down and they are shot. I also play five guitars everyday between practice and lessons so it gets expensive. I use D'Addarios for my acoustic (10s for my 12 string, 11 for my 6) and Ernie Ball for my electrics (8s on my LP, 9 on my tele, and 10 on my Carvin Semi Hollow). Maybe I'll get a set of Elixers for all of them and give them another shot. It's been 10 years at least. Thanks so much for your comments. I really appreciate your time. @@8MinuteAxe How do you manage proper intonation with 8s on a LP? I use 9s on my Strat, Tele and Hamer SteveStevens, but on the LP fretted notes tend to get sharp, exspecially the A on the 2nd fret of the G-string, so I switched to 10s for the LP. As to strings I also play Elixers on my acoustics exclusively after having tried all kinds of brands. They sound great and last longer than any other brand I tried, even without wiping them after playing. And for picks I also use the Jazz III, but the MaxGrip 1.38, since I'm playing rhythm and lead on my acoustics and found that playing lead with thinner pics you're always at a loss against the guitar that strumms the rhythm, as long as you play without amplification.

It's not bad but you get what you pay for. I'm down to a short list. I'm leaning towards either the Takamine or the Washburn. I'm looking at the models that run for around $750. I think I may give the Washburn a try. The 24 scale neck and tapered design is attractive. I'm not a big guy and in doing my most recent video (the Metallica riffs on the 12-string) I had to work to squeeze those notes on the 1st and 2nd fret...and I've been playing for 30 years so I'd like to think it's not a matter of developing hand strength. @@8MinuteAxe Hi Mark! Yes guitartuna has Guitar 12 string standard as well as Ukelele Soprano in C. Anything else you can find on the pro bundle. I own a custom Kinkade jumbo 12 string cuttaway made in UK 1984. Spruce top Amazaque back and sides (although I ordered Ovankol) cherry bindings mahogany neck ebony fingerboard pearl snowflake inlays 50mm at top nut Schaeller pearl machine heads fitted with K&K pure mini pickups. The main feature of this beast is the fully compensated bone saddle. Each string has its own position and stays in tune with perfect intonation regardless of capo position. She is gorgeous just had her completely restored in Saigon Vietnam. Everybody who has ever played her has been extremely reluctant to let me have her back. You can play absolutely any style on her. The action is perfect and I use my own guage strings: heavy top/light bottom which I make up from 2 sets of 6 strings and some additional singles. Unfortunately I left her in Siem Reap Cambodia 2 months ago and now I'm locked down in Thailand and can't get back to Cambodia. It's driving me crazy. I just came over to Thailand for a week and now I'm separated from her. This lockdown is madness. There's even a curfew over here. I had to go out and buy a 6 string to keep my fingers nimble...I am now 68 and starting to develop some arthritis in my right hand fingers. I play a lot of Roger Hodgson Supertramp and Pink Floyd covers. Also ragtime and folk. I would recommend either a Guild jumbo 12 string or a Lowden. The Lowden is more similar to mine (Kinkade) I don't like Martin or Taylor. They don't have the warmth or sustain and overtones that my 12 string develops. I am so pleased with her after 35 years I wouldn't exchange her for any other guitar. However I have always said: Show me a finer guitar and I will buy it. If you want more info I can send you some pics and recordings via email if you have a contact adress. I met an avid 12 string collector from USA on a similar 12 string tutorial. He is now love struck with my axe and wants to order a Kinkade 12 string too! here is a link to a Kinkade interview. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qtqujuSuPYA.html Stay safe! Hey Paul, my new video a cover and lesson of the Beatles' Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, premieres less than an hour from now (2pm EST). Here's the link for the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vZdVOj1wSr8.html. The chat will be open from now (I'll be hopping on shortly until the end of the video). Please join me if you can. Either way, please give the video a few views (the earlier the view, the more weight it gets with the algorithm) , comment, and like when you have time. I'm also giving away another guitar and a pedal! I really appreciate your support. I hope you have a great weekend. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need tabs or helping with anything related to the guitar. I'm going to start doing free live lessons soon as well. Take care and be well. Mark

Surprised you didn't mention "Musette" tuning, which is really essential for a 12-string. The idea is to tune the pairs a "gnats" sharp/flat of each other. This is how you get that distinct 12-string tremelo/wobble wave-form. Tuning a 12-string "straight" with a tuner just sounds flat and dull by comparison.

regarding the capo, instead of paying ten of $$ for a 12-string capo, i went to the guitar store and bought an old fashioned standard Dunlop elastic 6-string capo for about $7; it covers all the strings properly, no muffled strings. It also stays out of the way of my fretting hand, which i cannot say regarding some of the newer contraptions. and no metal parts to scratch my guitar. retro is better in this instance.

Hey pkoven. I really appreciate you checking out the video and for the FYI regarding the capo. I always recommend the Kyser 12 but I do have a lot of viewers that are looking for a cheaper alternative. I guarantee they'll appreciate it too! I do a lot of classic rock covers on the 12 including a ton of Beatles, Zep, Stones, Boston, etc. Here's one of my latest, a cover of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (I also try to get as creative as I can with the videos too). If you have some time, let me know what you think. LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMOND COVER AND LESSON ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vZdVOj1wSr8.html&ab_channel=8MinuteAxe. I also give a brand new 12 string guitar away each month (I'm giving away another on Friday, my latest video has details on how to win). Either way, thanks for watching this one. Have a great evening and take care. -Mark

Great stuff here. Been playing 12 string for over 55 years. Double pass tuning a must. I try most everything on a 12, just because; e.g. "Walk Don't Run" is awesome on a 12. I keep mine tuned down 1 semi-tone to D#. Only capo when playing with others. Use a 'G7th Newport 12 string capo with compensated pad. Works great with my Guild and Taylor 12 strings (1+7/8" nut) wihout needing re-tuning. Korg chromatic tuners. Fingerpick everything using my nails as picks. ;-{ >

I agree with all your points and suggestions, well done! Twelve strings are a beast and it’s definitely a learning curve. Tuning is a bitch and you have to tweak them until your ear tells you it sounds best, for one thing. A good tuner is es- sential and PATIENCE is the watchword. Like you, I like tuning down a full step not only to help reduce neck tension, but for the depth of sound it gives. And capos are a blessing for a twelve. Jingle jangle, baby. Nice video, thanks.

Moving the open chords up and down the neck was an idea I can try. The suspended chords sound interesting but I don't understand suspended chords. Another point I didn't know was to buy a 12 string capo. And to string one not at a time.

Retune several times. I use a thin pick on guitar, or the pick noise is too much. I use a heavier pick on the rare occasions I use a pick for my basses.

I am late to this party, appeared in my feed. Just wanted to say, i have been playing 12 string for 13 years (and been tuning it for 13 extra years haha sorry had to) but yes 13 years on the same 12 string (Cort NS) an intermediate guitar and i can tell ya, if you want to replace all the strings at once, go for it. My action is 4/64 on the treble and 5/64 on the bass side and my truss still has a long way to go. I have NEVER restrung one string at a time and the guitar is fine. Also, don't take it to a professional, learn to set up your own instruments. Remember, the professional setting it up doesn't play exactly like you do, so the instrument will intonate (yes intonation can be set on an acoustic, it's not that hard to learn how to) different to when you play it. I think, like thoery and good feel, being able to set up your own instruments is a vital part of making music. Plus it is really a lot of fun, and quite cathartic to do. Love the video, good tips otherwise.

The video will premiere today at 2pm (less than an hour from NOW!!). I will be doing a live chat from 1:45 until the end of the first play of the video. Here's the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wqyHrEkk064.html I hope you can join me. Either way, I would really appreciate your support with this one. I would really appreciate any help you can lend by watching the video multiple times, liking, and commenting. Great stuff Mark, especially for those who have little to no experience with 12 string guitars. Your blog and videos are the next best thing to being in a band with an experienced 12 string player, which is pretty rare to find. Also thanks for researching and playing demos of all those iconic 12 string guitar songs. I myself found a 12 string guitar indispensable when having to play worship music in church alone wih no back-up. The 12 string fills in with a much more full sound rich in overtones and harmonics that a 6 string just cannot match. Great advice about using a medium or thin pick as opposed to a heavy pick as it does give more control and even volume between strings, now I need to go buy some more as I always used heavy picks in the past. Thanks for all your time posting and sharing as it re-newed my interest in 12 string playing and like you, I have now relapsed into another addiction/ fatal attraction with my neglected FG-260 circa 1970. I had not played it since we moved away from our church in San Clemente in 1995. May I share some of my tricks? One tip to getting the classic 1960s sound amplified from an acoustic is an LR Baggs M1 pick-up as that is what everyone used back in the day before Piezos , it just sounds "right". The other thing I like about slack tuning the 12 string is you can play it tuned to D with no capo and tht gives different overtones and a rich sound to it which also allows you to sing songs that might be a bit too high in pitch for your voice, especially once you are over 50 or smoked cigarettes. God bless and thank you for the greatest and most comprehensive acoustic 12 string resource on the web, bar none! :) Jay
