Tunisian innovators have looked to the past for inspiration from sails on ships to come up with designs for new bladeless turbines.
A start-up known as Saphon Energy has developed a new turbine design which is quieter, safer and more efficient than traditional wind turbines and is capable of capturing twice as much wind energy.
37-year-old engineer Anis Aouini leads the Tunis-based firm. He says that they looked to the old technology used by sailors of the ancient civilisation of Carthage, as…

In case it's not obvious to you, it can only potentially extract the energy from that tiny circle of wind, that's why turbines have big blades, to interact with a lot more wind.

Well, I'm not trying to offend anybody, but I'm pretty sure that it is impossible for that generator to have an 80% efficiency (as they say in the video). The maximun theoretical efficiency is Betz limit = 16/27 = 59%.

This looks like a very powerful system. Good enough to power a single LED or 30 mA..... On a windy day.

A wind turbine’s efficiency can be imagined pretty easily by thinking about what would happen if you ran the turbine generator as a motor. Would this turbine turned into a motor generate a lot of wind? I think not.

Amazing. Between 1 and 5,75 Watts being generated there. That's not enough to power a single average LED-bulb.

Wow, they are really close! All they need are some large blades and then redesign it to make it rotate centrally instead of the power losing eccentric position...lol!

A 3 axle gear box requiring lubrication and periodic maintenance checks is suppose to be lower cost? It also looks like it is not self orienting (the blue mechanism looks like a hydraulic actuator to turn it in the right direction. Even the website says "Saphon’s aim wasn’t to improve the current wind turbines technology"

wow, I had seen a many bad designs, but this is an ultimate winner :-) The wind turbine power output depends from the crossection area and the windspeed. It looks, that the Tunisian engineers need a little bit more study of technologies 50+ years old.

I have to add.. the cost of the gearing that produces that oscillation, and is out in the weather... Big money sink. Also, that gearing is spinning mass - a big energy sink. Add in the (relatively) tiny surface area for wind to act on, and I don't see how this could possibly be more efficient than a spinning blade.

50 of those short towers makes 20 kilowatts. Impressive especially the design! Solves the bird and blade erosion problems too. I think you have a winner and the decentralized aspect will not only cut costs but will work well in India. India is on its way to a huge change in it's society along with the electrification of all developing countries. Once there were electric lights in America everything changed. The biggest was work, which could now be a 24/7 affair. It doesn't work well to work in the dark or by torch light so people didn't do it unless they had to. Lives began to move twice as fast and everybody loved that. This meant production around the clock and more jobs for everyone and we loved that too. This is what's coming soon to an undeveloped or under-developed country near you and it's going to be massive.

To all you skeptics out there. The engine works and had lots of prizes all over the world where it has been presented. Microsoft is even in talks with the company in order to become a global distributor. Yes it is African, but it will be wrong to presume that there are less competent inventors in Africa. Half of the engineers in Nasa if not more are from so called developing countries. This company just chose to produce this turbine in Tunisia. It's going to be manufactured very soon in large scale. I suggest that you read some more about it, litteraure it's available in the company's website and various other places. The Saphon is going to be installed in India pretty soon. Many countries in Africa in Asia are interested in the project. Good luck to one innovative energy provider with zero pollution

Peder skram what we cant critique stupid ideas because they come from 3rd world countries ? Are there ideas held to different standards? Your being condescending assuming anyone believes this is stupid because Africa came up with it. It's stupid because there is very little energy in air. 1/4[1.225]A*V^3 to be exact. So fundamentally to get more power than the big offshore turbines it has to be about that same size. Can you imagine a 190 m diamater dish!? Preposterous wind turbines work by using as little material (blades ) to sweep the largest area possible ( a big circle) this only gets energy from air that runs into it meaning you gotta build the maximum amount of material for minimum benefit. Fundamental laws of physics say this not just me. You cant take more energy from air than it has without sending the wind back the other way. Furthermore blockage effects limit the efficiency as solidity approaches 1 so there is no way this thing will ever pay for itself go ahead and try to dispute the fundamental physics of wind power but I'm afraid you have been scammed too

Interesting design . But wind-turbines derive their energy from the length of the load-arm . For example : short length (diameter) of rotor is small power , long length of rotor is high power , because the longer the lever or arm (blade) of the rotor is , the more the wind can exert load on the axle of the rotor , and so on the generator . No matter whether it is a propellor , or this system . It is analog to the system of the lever , or like a crow bar . I also think this system is more prone to failure due to its more complex functioning than a more simple and therefore more robust rotor-system . The more simple the system the lesser the wear and tear and thus the longer the lifetime . If the disc is made bigger , then the energy output will be higher . That is also why the present generation of wind-turbines have such huge propellors . The long the lever , the higher the load possible .

@gerardvaughan1847
@gerardvaughan1847 5 лет назад
Yes the thing is utter lunacy. Albert Betz made some gross assumptions in his reasoning, but also drew attention to an otherwise overlooked fact. Another fact that is overlooked - particularly by "windfarm" designers - is that a Turbine has opposite " economy of size" to that of an Alternator. This makes the combined economy of size, a necklace- shaped function of Size. (on a "log". scale, i.e. x times so much per scale division) there exists a size region of lowest cost per unit of energy supplied. This is the region of size where the two components cost about the same. In my (rather large) experience, this region is around 0.5 to 1m diameter !!

Boy, were they ambitious with the number of bulbs on their display board, or what? At 0:47, we see voltage (apparently) between 20V and 33V. We see current (apparently) ranging between 20mA and 40mA. That's a power of between 0.4W and 1.2W. As someone else mentioned, not enough to light an LED light bulb. On a really windy week (month). they could harvest 1kWh in, what, between 40 days and 120 days? At $0.16/kWh, that'd be about $0.50 and $1 per year. We're talking a really, really long return on investment! Maybe the could put two or three garbage can lids up there and double the power. Or build a wind farm in a foreign country! With a wind farm, maybe you could light a single light bulb!

@ Erik J I can only hope you're joking... First, there is no perpetual motion of any kind, it defies the basic laws of thermodynamics. Second, there is no pressurization of any kind occurring here, and even if there were (which there isn't) the "pressure" can never exceed atmosphere, 14.7lb/in^2 at sea level (where they are) and the wind being a fluid will not allow itself to become pressurized when it isn't contained in any way and will just flow out and around any supposed containment this preposterous design would attempt to achieve. Third, this video is two years old, and you haven't heard a single thing about this ludicrous design of bladeless wind turbine elsewhere... why exactly do you think that is? Keep in mind, wind turbines/mills have been tried in numerous configurations for literally THOUSANDS of years, and only now is this magical design magically appearing and so great, save for the fact that the demonstration can't light even a single bulb in the array because it displays on the multimeter at 0:45 at around 33 volts and about 0.11 amps, so maybe around 3.63 watts. Oh, and that's DC, not AC, so if you wanted to use it for a household appliance that uses AC it would have to go through an inverter, which would be "lossy" as well. This isn't me saying it's generating no power, this is THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT saying it's generating hardly enough wattage to light a SINGLE LED bulb used in a keychain flashlight. So, they are fighting against mathematics, physics, thermodynamics, and reality... which is why this scam died out over three years ago and merely managed to bubble its way back to the top of the crap heap in the last two years to make another round of april-fools.

Nobody Uknow I think you misunderstood my use of terms ... obviously PRESSURE cannot be accumulated as the air can flow around the bowl... I was referring to the FORCE of the wind, which is trapped inside the bowl like the wind on the sail of a boat. You do understand how sailboats work right? Although Sailboats have no regard for atmospheric pressure, magically the FORCE of the wind still makes them move anyway. Have some common sense bro. Additionally you also have no idea how the geometry of the toggle system and the gearing angles and other internal mechanisms are set up. It is true that is isn’t generating a lot of power, but that has nothing to do with the mechanics. The generator is obviously not efficient but again... this is a prototype and those shortcomings can be rectified. They comment very early on about the efficiency. Look at the small size of the thing. It seems apparent to me that it would be useful in situation where a large bladed turbine would not be feasible. I think that’s the point. A small footprint solution for specific situations. It’s seems evident to me that more work is needed, but I see this as a concept... not a finished product and I’m giving them credit for creativity. There must have been some necessity for them to design it the way they did. I don’t think they meant for it to replace the huge wind turbines already out there... it’s a solution for a specific situation. This is what inventors do, they work as much as they can on a concept until they need outside help, either with technical assistance or with finances. I don’t see them as scammers. How many products have you invented and brought to market? There is a difficult process to navigate. And There are countless products that never make it to market for many different reasons. To say that a lack of mass production is equal to lack of validity just isn’t true. Big corps couldn’t care least about the environment. They just want fast easy money, and they aren’t concerned with helping out small niche groups or dealing with specialized products unless they can rape people on the pricing. This is why specialty products are usually reserved for the wealthy because that’s the only way they can make the profit margin they require for niche products. obviously isn’t a fortune maker, but it could be useful in certain situations. And you’re over reaching on the single led power consumption. 3 Watts is plenty for a small led panel which can provide a quite useful amount of light. I’ve developed products in the LED industry. A Walmart LED flashlight is far less efficient than a high end set up. There are more factors than just the led itself. No one uses the DIP or bulb that you are referring to. They use SMD chips, and along with a good driver you can put out a very good amount of light with 3 Watts. In any case, I doubt that they would be tapping the juice straight off the generator, they would be charging batteries with it, which this would do just fine as is. If left overnight to charge it could charge a full bank of 8 to 12 car batteries overnight. Which could be very useful. Obviously not as a continuous power source, but as an emergency back up system. It would work for a small outpost in an emergency situation.
