Marti Germany is renovating and extending an electrified railway tunnel under traffic. The so-called tunnel widening system, developed by Marti Technik, is the decisive factor here. The Petersberg Tunnel Expansion project sets new standards and demonstrates the innovative strength of Marti engineers.

Doesn't this also allow trains of a larger, standard loading gauge to enter the tunnel. IIRC Germany's railways were originally constructed by a variety of different local railway companies. I would expect they didn't all have the same loading gauge, so like in most old European systems some tunnels are too narrow or too low to fit a lot of 'standard' carriage types. Increasing the loading gauge of a line is a great long term move, especially if it's current loading gauge is smaller than that on nearby lines so quite a few train types have to avoid that particular line (i.e. double-decker cars, or wide flatcars etc.) Imagine if we did this across the EU and all of our trains were actually fully interoperable across the continent. Of course, increasing the loading gauge is very spectacular in the case of tunnels, and a little bit less so with tight bridges, but outside of them, it's more about moving all kinds of obstacles out of the way of the future larger trains, oh, and shaving bits off platforms to fit the wider trains. (if the goal is to go to a wider loading gauge.) Of course this problem is much worse in the UK, where some very widespread loading gauges don't fit a flat car with a container on top.

The 'dramatic' background music is horrid, and is mixed so loud as to interfere with the narration. Next time, please hire an actual adult to do the audio. I have to wonder, is the rest of your company this incompetent??
@KimmoKM
@KimmoKM Год назад
Impressive. I wish I had known of these videos when there still were people who were hyping up Elon Musk's Boring company, as though getting gigalucky with Peter Thiel making something out of a company you had stakes in gave you more special expertise in tunneling than a century of built-up institutional knowledge and know-how. I think this would have rightly shut them up.

@Critizens

The original tunnel was built in 1874 and back then just blasted into the rock - so it wasn't sealed against water and almost 150 years old. It had to be renovated one way or another.
@marioxerxescastelancastro8019
What a waste of money and materials. The tunnel already existed and nothing of value was added. 2 tracks before and 2 tracks after.
@wilsonx3217
@wilsonx3217 Год назад
If you want to use bigger trains you have to enlarge old tunnel.
@theVtuberCh
@theVtuberCh Год назад
It removes a safety risk. They couldn’t use both directions of track at the same time because the tunnel was too narrow to allow the trains to pass arch other at speed. Now that has been corrected and it doubles the throughput
@marioxerxescastelancastro8019
@@theVtuberCh I know that was the premise, but it is false.
@ElRel
