Everyone especially liked that it was not necessary to climb to the height of the intercepted target, but it was possible to shoot it down, being lower by 3-4.5 thousand meters. It should be noted that, at that time, the Tu-128 weapon system was superior in all respects to the systems of all other air defense aircraft: this was the missile launch range, the height of the targets hit, the angle of attack, the range of capture and detection of targets. It was bad with low altitudes, but this shortcoming was subsequently eliminated during the modernization of the Tu-128 in the Tu-128M. The combat use of the Tu-128 involved several typical options. In one of them, the detection of targets and guidance of the interceptor was carried out with the help of ground stations or AWACS Tu-126. It should be noted that when interacting with the latest Tu-128 crews, they often had to work in semi-autonomous mode. The fact is that the radiation pattern of the Tu-126 antenna had a significant "dead zone", representing a ring that the target skipped quite quickly. In addition, the altitude of the target was determined very approximately, by position relative to the Tu-126 itself. The operator of the AWACS aircraft gave only the course and composition of the target. Having received this data, the Tu-128 crew conducted a further search on their own. With another - autonomous - version, the Tu-128 crew had to act without the help of ground or air guidance equipment. The interceptor was assigned a barrage area, usually at a level of 11,000 m and above. This height of the Tu-128 was held, unlike the Su-15 and MiG-31, "without straining", without afterburner. There was an option to use "one hundred and twenty-eighth" as part of a detachment of three to four aircraft (the so-called "17x36" method). In this case, the detachment system was a narrow or wide bearing, in which the squad commander’s plane was the last. Each crew searched in its own sector and on the radio reports to the commander about the situation. He assessed the situation and made a decision on his own or reported to the CP and acted as directed. In practice, this technique was not practiced infrequently, since it required significant flight crews, their high flight and tactical training. Sorry for the google translation :(

Joke aside,Tu-128 was very advance for its time,thou it was outdated by 70s,when MiG-25 started taking over its roles,thou Tu-128 was still in service,but more for patrolling and just since they were still of use.Primary roles of intercepting were given to MiG-25 and to MiG-31 later on,while Tu-128 stayed for less important important tasks.

nikolai Vasilev Honestly the Tu-128 was a relatively poor aircraft compared to the Ye-152, which was contemporary to it. And considering it cannot exceed mach 2 for its own size in the late 50s-60s, the Mig-21 was faster, lighter, AND more maneuverable.

It's hard to believe, looking at the Russian TU-128 from the outside that this was a plane designed specifically to knock down in-coming enemy bombers. This Russian TU-128 Heavy Interceptor was a bomber size airplane with jet fighter speed. This plane was in dire need of a gun. No Gun, just 4-missiles for taking down bombers, that had no escort. Like our first production Phantoms, no gun, no way to defend itself from attacking aircraft, because of frequent missile failure at that time (late 60's). Mini-gun added, problem resolved. The biggest jet fighter by a substantial margin, the Tu-128, it even dwarfed our Phantom (62' lgth). and our Thunder Chief (64' lgth). Its use could have been expanded by the addition of a gun, I'm kinda glad they didn't.

@riccardosmirnov5063 5 лет назад
Yes, but actually the task was covered by Mig-25, the lack of in flight refueling capability has led to Mig-31. The Mig-31 can cover very long range CAP mission. In this way, the interceptor is already in the air when the alarm is given. Without losing time and fuel in a scramble. The Mig-31 has outstanding capabilities in long lasting supersonic interceptions, for atmospheric and low orbit targets. A similar thing had the F14.

@@snowblind9065 They had tsar bombs, masked trains with intercontinental nuclear rockets, the largest nuclear submarines with nuclear rockets and the fastest interceptor aircrafts. Also they constructed the largest cargo helicopter that still has the largest loading capacity and even can lift planes ( mil mi 26), and they had well advanced fighter aircraft like for example mig 15, 21, 29 or su 30 and 34 and very advanced attack helicopters like the mil mi 24. They had radar technology that could find out western stealth and spy planes ( Lockheed U2 and F117 Nighthawk) and eliminate them. The stealth technology was stolen by the germans anyway ;). Also they brought the first man and woman into space before any other nation on the planet and had an own space shuttle. Also they've build the fastest propeller Aircraft on the planet. All in all the had they had and still have the highest number of nuclear bombs in the world. And think about the Vietnam War that the Western World has lost after killing thousands of civilians also with chemicals.

@@perfectcell1157 You cannot realistically compare WWII aviation technology & performance with its 21st. Century counterparts. It simply does not work, not even in Sci-Fi ✈✈✈✈✈ P.S. The B-2 is faster than the BF-109 & can fly at a higher altitude. It doesn't need to be especially maneuverable. The B-2 can fly at night, the BF-109 is not meant to be a night interceptor.

And what the B2 has to do with the Tu-128? The Tu-128 is a sixties and seventies long range interceptor for B-52 and their missiles.
