Hey Terry, sure do 👍. I’m pulling these flies from Mike Valla’s Tying Catskill Style Dry Flies book. It has all the details and history surrounding the fly. Thanks
Nick, great tie. I have a question regarding hackle. When you tie on a hackle, does it matter what side of the hackle faces towards the eye of the hook? Should it be the “shiney” side or does it really matter? Thx.
Honestly, I don’t think it matters too much. But a lot of people like to tie dry flies with the inside of the fly facing the eye. So shiny side to the tail. Some say it floats better. Some say it looks better. Some say that since a wet fly is tied shiny facing the eye, a dry fly should be the opposite. I don’t know about all that. I think it’s your preference. Thanks
The book isn't about flies created in the Catskills. It's about flies tied in the Catskills, and used in the Catskills at the beginning of fly fishing in the US. Some of these flies were created in the Catskills, and some are variants of flies from other countries.
Nice but far from a ‘Catskill’ fly. The dubbing, and its secretive ingredients, is a history unto itself. Check out the discussion about this dubbing on Classicflytying.com
