...how the heck did this game put ACTUAL GRAPHICS in the BORDER area of the screen?! 8O
This week for No-Nostalgia Retro Gaming the votes are for "Turbo OutRun", a port of SEGA's arcade driving game by the same name, done by Probe Software and published through US Gold in 1989.

To answer the question about how the game puts graphics in the border: To allow for clipping when scrolling, the c64 has registers to switch between 24/25 lines, and 39/40 cols. How this actually works, is the border is triggered when you guys the 24th or 25th character line So if you switch the screen size in between these, then that trigger never occurs. There is no character data there to display, but sprites can be anywhere and so show up their fine at that point. You can do the same with the side borders, but it requires exact timing to do it on each line between the 39th and 40th column, so this is generally only done in demos.

Turbo Outrun is indeed an arcade game and yes both it and the C64 version your girlfriend will go join ride with your rival if you lose to them. However the C64 version has different music than than the arcade version per Probe Software tradition.

I don't remember if this is one of the racing games in which if you run out of fuel/time, your car slows to a stop, but if it crosses the checkpoint in the process, it lets you keep going.

This seemed to have a couple seconds leeway after running out of time before getting Game Over, but that was it. :P

I think the C64 has 8, 8x8px hardware sprites. This sprite swapping thing maybe is drawing sprites to get them to overlap? By combining two together. or it has a number of roadside objects that have backgrounds drawn into them but I'm thinking that's less likely.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 2 месяца назад
From what I can tell, the ENTIRE SCENE is background tiles. Since the framerate of the raw gameplay is not very high it suggests each screen refresh is happening over several vertical blanks and is somehow being buffered so that it all comes out on a single frame once ready to display. Sprites seem to be used only for the gauges at the bottom and weather effects.

@@Pixelmusement ok. So I guess it's this: each frame is constructed ad hoc by combining all the bitmaps together to form literally every frame.
@iwanttocomplain
@iwanttocomplain 2 месяца назад
@@Pixelmusement from taking another look. It's all just 8x8 pixel squares of tiles bolted together with a parallax background as well. The road is in fact hdma line scrolling. It's quite the impressive thing. Probe were very talented.

I didn't know the c64 could play digitised speech and music
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 2 месяца назад
It technically can't, but a bug with how the SID chip functions makes it possible to produce digitized sound with it using an unintended method. :B

You need to plat Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast sometime. Easily the best Outrun game.

Never played the C64 version of Turbo Outrun. Graphics and audio do look nice, but there’s something about the perspective of the road not changing with the position of your car that plays awful tricks with my head. And that music tune in the shop, Sega tended to reuse that little jingle a LOT. It’s also in the Game Gear version of GP Rider on the motorcycle select screen.

6:40 If I saw a pattern like that I would have immediately assumed the game crashed. Some of the sprites seem too low on the screen. Was this a PAL release that you ran in NTSC mode?
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 2 месяца назад
I've mentioned before early in the series that my recording setup makes it much easier to capture PAL gameplay in an NTSC form factor, which is what's going on here; It's set to PAL but my video conversion results in an NTSC screen aspect. I imagine the gauges are getting cut off slightly at the bottom because of that given that those gauges are extending into the border area using interesting hardware trickery. :B

That arcade game has a pretty good soundtrack and they completely ignored it.
@lupinzar
@lupinzar 2 месяца назад
It's interesting that some ports retained some of their original music and some got new soundtracks. Obviously a good composer can make SID versions of almost anything, so I'm guessing sometimes the composers were just given the job without any source material to reference.

@@lupinzar @lupinzar yeah, I image they didn't have the best conditions for making this version. A SID version would be sick tho

@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 2 месяца назад
A lot of what ended up on the Amiga also ended up on DOS and there often weren't huge differences between the two platforms, thus given my ADG series trying to do an Amiga-based NNRG probably wouldn't work out so well. :P

if the automatic is anything like it is in Outrunners you actually get penalized for using it, your top speed will be significantly slower, might be why you're missing the checkpoints so easily.

Right, but trying to shift up and down on a one-button joystick while ALSO having to deal with turbo boosts sounds like a recipe for failure. :P
