My usual settings as of August 2023:
Right Trackpad As Mouse
Sensitivity: High enough such that swiping from the very left edge to the very right edge does a 360
Vertical Scale: 35-40% (Low)
Smoothing: 40 (Maximum)
Trackball Friction: High
Gyro As Mouse
Sensitivity: About 1/3 of trackpad sensitivity (high enough to look at the sky comfortably)
Smoothing: 0-10 (Low)
LEFT Trigger As Primary Fire
This is inspired by osu! players who click with the free non-mouse hand, which dramatically improves aiming accuracy, speed and ergonomics. Normal controller players use this two-hand technique as well: they fire with the right trigger but aim with the LEFT movement/strafing stick, which is recommended to refine aim, activate aim assist, and make it easier to move/adjust while shooting.

Appreciate your comment on reddit and this video, been trying to figure out the best control scheme to play DOOM II WADs and it's been difficult. Plan to give this a try this evening to hopefully enjoy some more FPS games on the SD.

did you reduce or remove the vertical movement on the trackpad? i dont see aot of verticl movement on the reticl when you move around. i tried gyro with trackpad on the steamdeck with the original fear. i just used trackpad as mouse and completly removed the vertical movement. i played like splatoon. i also had flick stick set up on the same config. i moved back and forth between the two to figure out what i like more. flick stick is more usefull to learn because i also play on pc. On pc i try both gyro ratcheting and flick stick. I started with flick stick but now i use both gyro ratcheting and flick stick on the same game config and i just switch between the two. For most games no matter if i play them on pc o rh the deck i use a sensitivity of 1:4 on the gyro. It does not matter if i use flick stick, gyro ratcheting or the pad. Most games 1:4 is a good sensitvity for me. I also use flick stick on 4rd person action shooters like Evil west, Resident evil 4 remake and Control ultimate edition. But steam input sometimes completly changed the sensitivty at random. Today i tried to make a config for Evil west. I had to remove the forced on mouse acceleration first. But then at completly random times the gyro and flick stick sensitivity changes. I heard theire where alot of bugs in the old gyro settings. So i moved to the beta version wich now also uses pixel per revolution for the gyro aswell. Wich means i can set up flick stick first, en then the same amount of pixels per revolution is automatically copied to the gyro settings. Then i just choose a modifier of 4. On the old gyro settings i had to set up flick stick and gyro seperatly. Because gyro used %. I had used the beta update for two days earlier and i worked at those moments. But today when i made the Evil west config steam just compleylt bugs out. Yesterday i played shadow warior 3 without any of these problems occuring. If steam does not fix this mess i will just change over to rewasd.

I do reduce vertical scale to 40%, that is in fact my #1 recommendation for first-person shooters, so, glad you figured that out on your own, pretty much the same way I did! And yeah, Steam Input can be annoyingly buggy and frustrating, I think that's another reason most people don't bother with it unfortunately. I hope Valve gets their act together here.

@@DoubleJumpPunch For me right now this mostly occurins when switching layers. Atleast on the new beta update. Also the beta update now uses pixels per revoution like flick stick. So i just set up flick stick first (even when i dont use it). then steam just copy's over the value to the new gyro settings and all i have to do is set a multiplier (1:4). But doing anything other then a basic config does not always work. So for some games i resort to rewasd. Rewasd has less options, but the do support a few gamepads with 4 back buttons form flydigi. Most controllers are limited to a switch or ps4 mode. so even if the controllerhas back buttons you will be limited to just copies of already exisiting buttons. But flydigi controllers are fully supported on rewasd, so for games like doom eternal i use the apex 2 (wich has a wheel i can use for weapon sellection). Also i still dont like the fact that Valve still is this bad at markeing the steamdeck towards gyro players. It is mostly up to people like you who make video's about it. All valve has to do is make gyro configs for the most ppular games. and then explain how people can adjust these configs. i really like the hipfire option that let you skip the softpull actions on the triggers if you pull it faster. i use this to aim and shoot, or to skip the ads aim and emediatly shoot when i want to. so tis way i cvan free up the other trigger. am also experimenting on doing this with the left trigger instead of shooting with the right. Just because pulling the right trigger can mess up your aim (and on a muose this is also reversed when compared to a controller).
