That A310 video is actually very reassuring, when watched from the outside and inside of the cockpit. As in what we feel as a reason to panic while onboard is actually barely noticeable from the outside and perfectly within aircraft's capabilities.

@@donkoltz1 agreed. Gotta have a plan. In FL, we have fire season too but most people don’t know about it. The palm grasses burn here with ferocity. I know in south Florida, they let it burn ….a lot more than one might think. The recent fires were being watched and at 60% controlled but as usual, they let them burn. Letting the land naturally burn is part of the cycle. I realize this isn’t a one size fits all . Depending on if a town is nearby, the type of trees, wind and wind direction etc. but I do like how Florida doesn’t fight it. They let these things go every single year and it never builds up to dangerous levels. I no expert. Not even trying to be.

KPDK's tower would either clear me for that said low pass with pattern entry instructions or deny me the pass with a reason why ( optional ) A Clearance would be: November 8 8 3 Charlie Papa cleared for the Low Pass Runway 2 1 Left, fly runway heading climb to 2000 feet upon crossing runway threshold. A denial would be: November 8 8 3 Charlie Papa, request denied, traffic on short final. If denied i could request a delay and vectoring to get a slot to make the pass or just accept the denial that they are busy and forget about the low pass and move on. In case anyone is wondering, the MD-87 has its landing gear extended to increase drag and slow the plane during that steep decent so they don't over stress the plane when they pull up at the bottom of the dive. Airliners weren't made to do such aggressive maneuvers at high speeds, and that sudden change in G-forces with the rapid change in weight will flex those wings like nobodies business.

after dropping that much weight, the center of gravity has to have shifted & the flight profile radically different. Do flight systems automatically account for it or does it suddenly feel like flying a completely different plane to the pilot?

hmm i was under the impression that the gear is down as a simple override to the Ground Proximity Warning System, which would otherwise be screaming "TERRAIN, PULL UP!" wouldn't adjusting flaps be the standard solution for slowing airspeed on descent? then flaps neutral, TOGO throttle to exit, just like a normal emergency go-around?

As a child traveling overseas, the airlines would have a few music channels and 1 or 2 radio traffic traffic channels on the cabin headsets. Made for really cool conversations. It also helped that the pilots would share the pre-planed flight path. My father would give me maps and I would point out the landmarks in the distance and reference them on the map as were listening to air traffic. Made you feel more into the flight. It was like having a professional travel guide in the cockpit. I was welcomed many times into versus cockpits. Little did I know, my father was grooming me to become a pilot. Every time I fly, I’m smiling ear to ear with memories. Guess thats the importance of having both parents (male and female) in a children’s young life. Thanks dad..

1:56 The first time I saw that it was in 1998 after the hurricane Mitch in Honduras, the USAF crew did it with a C-130/C-160 I'm not sure which one it was because there was a few different planes carrying goods and supplies every day during a few weeks after the hurricane, but I remember the loud noise from the engines like "AAAAAAAAHHHHH" and the plane almost free falling until they got close to the run way and landed, it was the most crazy thing I had ever seen because the plane it was loaded to max capacity and they did from a very high altitude higher than this one from the video so the momentum gained should be something hard to explain in simple words...

Having experienced a last second go around due to a microburst -- per the pilot -- after we landed -- I can say it's the second most unnerving aspect of flying. The first? When your loved one -- not oneself -- is on such a flight and the pilot having to make multiple go arounds and not a damn thing that can be done to ease the anxiety. All pilots earn my utmost respect. None of them are paid what they are worth in terms of value and outcomes. Pilots are surgeons of the skies

Why on earth would they be retiring that A310? Seemed to be in great shape. Also, I'd love to have a C-160 up here in Alaska for remote village service. It's small enough and light enough to not damage the gravel road/sometimes runways but , can carry a lot more than a single engine Otter or de Havilland DHC-6.

I notice the planes used to fight fires are always an older plane. The stress on the airframes when dropping water or the fire retardant material is very high. I worry them using older airframes that the planes will break up during a fire drop.
@freightdog208
@freightdog208 2 года назад
The stress of a drop is well within the limitations of the airframe; that being said because of how they are operated they are inspected more than they were when in airline service. Regarding the age, this particular airplane was built in 1991, so not that old especially when compared to the airplanes that the jets replaced.

@sporange70

To a degree but mostly due to the strong winds experienced in the Azores and the runways proximity to the coastline. The wind hits the land and gets all churned up.

@@samiudsan1742 Land and sea breezes have effects reaching up to about 2000ft so yes if you get high enough you will get away from it. This type of turbulence may or may not reach so high. 0:30 I have landed there many times as an airline pilot. This is Lajes Field on Terceira Island in the Azores, one of several islands. It's an important refueling or alternate airport for Trans Atlantic Flights. The winds can be wicked. Was fortunate to layover many times. It is like stepping back in time. They raise cattle and laid back life style. They still have bull fighting and running of the bulls where locals line the road and taunt the bulls... This is where it happens. The Azores islands is part of Portugal. We got B767's and landed there less often, however we still had charters there as Lajes Field is a joint military and civilian field.
@NunoAndrade786
@NunoAndrade786 3 года назад
Wrong, this is actually Joao Paulo II Airport in Sao Miguel Island, which is around 100 miles away from Terceira Island. Lajes Field's runway is actually longer and wider than this one. Best regards

@@NunoAndrade786 It has been 13 years since I was there last (Lajes). 2001 to 2007 I landed there in a B757 and B767at least 1 or 2 times a month. Looked familure. Island, runway near water, azores, and never landed at airport you say I'm WRONG! Ha ha. However does not change fondly remembering my layovers. Quaint, historical and rural feel. People were friendly, food good. Except for serious winds and fog it was always a pleasure.

Gear down on the mad dog. Interesting. I can think of a lot of reasons, from GPWS inhibits, to the extended gear acting like a speed brake, but would think more about how it reduces climb out, especially in valley fire fighting. I know they're dumping a lot of weight which helps, but I sure would like to see their pre-run and/or after jettison check list(s).

I was wondering this too. Surely it’s not just to shut the gpws up, maybe to avoid flap config warnings too?
@quentagonthornton49
@quentagonthornton49 10 месяцев назад
@@LeeMatches It probably is just to shut up the GPWS and landing configuration warnings although I wouldn't know why one of the pilots couldn't just press the master warning button to shut it up or disable the GPWS and landing config warnings by either switching it off if possible or if not, pulling its breakers before flight. Certainly pilots doing firefighting operations would be very well trained for flying at very low altititude safely so simply ignoring the GPWS seems like it would be an acceptable option.
