Hey man, I like your videos. You have a good way of giving a concise summary, while keeping the important details. I also like your subtle humor. And the production quality is great. it's nice to see videos without unnecessary zoom ins and dozen of jump cuts. I hope your channel gets more views so you can keep the videos coming. It's clearly visible that you are passionate about coffee (while not going into the territory of coffee insanity ;).

Finally!! 😁 awesome video Aaron straight to the point! So I got caught with the grinder/burr bug rabbit hole, and currently own 2- fellow Ode ( SSP MP & 2nd Gen burrs), 1 DF64 ( I’ve been playing/swapping burrs with the standard Italmill, Ode 1s & Mazzer 189D), 2 DF83s (SSP HU & Standard italmill) and a Baratza Sette 270 (I still really enjoy the creamy espresso body from the conical burrs). The DF83 it’s a monster, one thing that bothers me a little bit is the motor spinning so hard that moves a little slightly the entire grinder every time I start it. As you mentioned stock burrs produce a lot of fines so currently I only use them for espresso. I’ve been thinking in upgrading my second DF83 to SSP sweet lab cast burrs to start playing with pour overs, but I think I need to get rid of some grinders before spending more money on more coffee equipment. 🤣 Cheers man and again content is getting better! Congratulations!

I have the V1. its great. This grinder's motor is so fast and powerful that you do not need to hot start it, so pop corning is never an issue. I also prefer to just hold the portafilter right below the shoot. The grinder is so fast ... so what I only have to hold it for a few seconds... no dumping from dosing cup to portaFilter. Skip that unnecessary step. Also I never squirt water on my beans. To me that is another unnecessary step and I've had no problems with my V1. another suggestion, tapping the sides of the shoot with motor on after a couple of sessions cleans out the shoot. (in two seconds) its been a rock solid grinder for one year now. no problems and I have never even cleaned it. (other than the side tap)

@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Год назад
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!! Honestly that’s a tough one. You are right that the X54 has the build quality and brands reputation behind it, and it does make good espresso! The DF83 makes great espresso and grinds faster, like way faster, and has the ionizer!! But I don’t know about the longevity vs the X54. Turin quality has come a long way but Mahlkönig has a stellar history and knows how to make long lasting gear. The X54 has some nice features over the DF83 like programmable grind times to get you a consistent dose and a nicer portafilter holder setup with hands free grinding… so it’s really hard to say. I will say that I haven’t compared shots from them side by side yet so I can’t comment on a flavor profile comparison but in my experience the DF83 has been tasting really good compared to my other flat burr grinders, except for the EK43!

I just received my DF83 v2 but I DO have static buildup issues. I have to use the RDT to keep it clean. Perhaps I need to open it to see if I really have the plasma generator. Perhaps I have old beans. Do you have any suggestions? I have the DLC burrs as well and to in order to pull a good shot, my dial indicator is on roughly 5 or 6 which seems way too low. Anything else pulls too fast. I did do the alignment and I found it to be pretty good. It seems as if Turin places a small white strip to improve alignment. I shimed it slightly more but overall I found burr alignment to be very good. I just find it odd that while my machine seems to be calibrated properly that my espresso shots (medium roast) are around the 5 mark. The burrs start to chatter around the 0 mark or slightly below so it seems to be correct. Thoughts?
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron 11 месяцев назад
As far as the static goes you could open it up and see if you do have a V2, if that’s what you ordered though I imagine it does have it. DLC coated burrs do produce more fines so it could be that combined with the speed of grinding with bigger burrs it’s creating more fines spray. As far as your grind setting there is really no right or wrong, if you’re getting good stairs that you enjoy at setting 5-6 then that’s perfectly fine. The grinder is designed to grind that fine. It could be your coffee. Getting burr chatter around the zero mark is normal if that’s where your dial indicator ring is set. The burrs are pretty much touching at that point. If you don’t like it you could set your dial indicator off chirp a little more but then your grind size would be around 4 or something like that for your espresso setting.
@mickyd3
@mickyd3 11 месяцев назад
@@coffeenerdaaron Thank you for your response. I took it apart and it does have the correct plasma generator or static reducer. Perhaps you are correct about the coffee. On another note, the burrs are probably not fully seasoned and I should give it more time. Otherwise, the coffee taste much better than what was possible using my Oracle Touch built-in conical burrs.

Hi Aaron, nice review. I own the DF83 v2/stock burrs - use it for both espresso and aeropress and it's an absolute beast and really happy with it. But I found that the inner diameter of the extension collar for the dosing cup is actually smaller than the dosing cup's inner diameter which creates a ridge that the grounds get hung up on, effectively increasing the overall retention. Is that the same as on your model?

I considered the Timemore 077s, but it seems that the adjustment range is very tight. How is this range for dialing in shots? I’m also considering the Zerno. It’s only 64mm, but with the pre-breaker and the blind burrs, plus hyper alignment, it seems like it punches above the 64mm level.
@coffeenerdaaron

I’ve had no problem with the adjustment range for espresso, it seems to have a decently wide range so I don’t think you’d have an issue. As for the Zerno, I don’t have any experience with one but I’ve heard they’re very nice, and I’ve also heard they out perform when it comes to 64mm’s!

Arron, I'd love your thoughts on how much grinders matter (taste wise) to those of us who drink a more traditional Italian espresso rather than more modern third wave light roasted single origins. Maybe a 70/15/15 blend Brazil, Guatemala, Robusta or Monsoon. Roasts in the Full City Plus range. No oils but darker than most 3rd wave coffees. Just an example. A nice SO Brazil 50/50 wet/dry dropped at the first sign of second crack is good too. To put things into perspective, something a hair darker than Onyx Eclipse. Which I believe currently is a Guatemala (I have about 1/2 a kilo of mine left, lol). I'm curious because, to me, all coffees like this have a chocolate, toffy and or roasted nut flavor to them. There really isn't much origin characteristic to bring out so I am not sure how much it really matters. As an aside, can't wait for the next grinder review! Super helpful.
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Год назад
First off let me say thanks for watching and thanks for the great question! I'll start out be saying grind quality matters, it can have a huge impact on enhancing the flavor notes of a coffee, as I'm sure you know, but to your point with darker roasted coffees where it's much harder to taste and separate the flavors or taste origin to begin with, it probably doesn't matter as much. I say that as someone who doesn't drink dark roasts, or even medium roasts that often, if ever at all. I can only assume it doesn't play as big of a role in the final taste in the cup, but some might argue that if a grinder can improve the flavor profile of a light roast, couldn't it then improve the flavor profile of a darker roast to the same degree? I'm just throwing that out there as a question cause I honestly don't know, but if I had to guess I would say it probably doesn't make as much of a difference in your scenario. Hope thats helps!!
@kitcraft9516
@kitcraft9516 Год назад
@@coffeenerdaaron Thank you for always answering so concisely and with candor. I want to reiterate that I personally wouldn't consider the coffee dark, but it is much darker than these Nordic style pour over roasts that are popular today. So it is better to err on the side of it being considered a dark roast, lol. More to the point: I really don't taste origin flavors in the coffees I prefer. But I'd love to be able to intensify what I do taste. Maybe to increase the body of the shot and highlight the dark chocolate flavors. I guess my takeaway is that even if I am not getting more clarity with a better grinder or burr set with my particular tastes in coffee, I might still improve what flavors are there. So, thank you. Now, to figure out just how much grinder I need, lol. There is a big gap between something like an ESP and the DF83.
@coffeenerdaaron

I've been using the niche zero for about 2 years now and while I have loved it, I find the amount of static, as well as the trouble I have switching from espresso to brew grind settings (seems to lose some alignment after moving from espresso to filter and back), would the df 83v2 be much of an upgrade for filter brews?
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron 11 месяцев назад
It's a little bit of a hard question to answer since the Niche is conical burr and the DF83 is flats. So it depends on you flavor profile preferences a bit. I don't have a ton of experience with the Zero however the filter brews I have had from it didn't really impress me, but I have had great espressos from it. I think the performance for both filter and espresso, and the fact that I prefer flat burrs, the DF83 is a fantastic bargain and gives a lot of other higher priced grinders a run for their money. Personally I think it's a better grinder than the Niche, but that's just me.

@@coffeenerdaaronI've got a lot of great coffee shops and roasters nearby who use ek43's and I really enjoy the some of the interesting lighter roasts they have. Problem is using the niche for filter they never end up tasting the same. So I'm currently throwing up possibly getting an ode v2 and keeping both. So I guess the more important thing is, does the ode v2 produce better filter brews than the df83 in your opinion? Would be nice to have a machine that does both equally well to save bench space but that's life I guess
@coffeenerdaaron

@@UncommonS3nse the Ode gen 2 is a good grinder for the money but if you want one to do it all I'd say sell the Niche and take the money you would've spent on the Ode and put it towards the DF83 V2! The lid is the same size as the DF64 and other variations I believe, so you could purchase a metal one if you'd like, the metal one is heavier and a little more awkward to handle so some will prefer the wood. I'm sure you can also find someone who'd be willing to trade a metal lid for a wood lid! Side button is an improvement after the original DF64's the button was bellow the portafilter forks, so like bellow your cup, or portafilter so a little awkward to reach although I did find after getting used to the DF64, on the DF83 at first I was looking for the power button and then being like oh yeah it's moved! :D Everyone complains about the power cord placement, I think we're all in agreement, odd design choice :p Stands out a bit more maybe on the white version though! :o I didn't notice any difference in the feel of adjusting the DF64 over the DF83, both are relatively nice and smooth, not amazing but not something to complain about. DF64V is the their latest, it shares a similar spring to the DF83 and a whole new design vs the other DF64's more similar to the Lagom P64. On my V1 DF83 I noticed an improvement in clarity and reduction in body (less fines) by opening up the declumper a bit, Original V1 had a two layer declumper. It seems like the DF83 v2 has a similar declumper set up to my modded one now though with only the single layer door so should be similar. I find it's a good balanced burr and does well for filter too.
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Год назад
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I do know that the lids are the same size but I forgot to mention about potentially swapping to the older metal lid if you want. For me the difference in smoothness of the adjustment dial was noticeable over my DF64 so I though it was worth mentioning, and honestly it was one of the first things I noticed out of the box. I agree on the declumper, when I put mine back together after filming I actually cut off the flap and I have notice a slight improvement in my filter brew clarity, however I still think, especially with the standard burrs, it’s better for espresso.
