Welcome to Bonita's Kitchen! Today we will be making TURKEY NECK SOUP! So tasty and made with turkey necks! See recipe below!
Our website link: www.bonitaskitchen.com

#homemaderecipe #turkeyrecipe #newfoundlandandlabrador #bread
Ingredients:
TURKEY NECKS, AS MANY AS YOU WANT
1 PIECE SALT BEEF, CHOPPED in small pieces ( soak over night in cold water)
4 CARROTS, peeled and chopped
1 TURNIP/rutabaga, peeled and chopped
1 PARSNIP, peeled and chopped
3 POTATOES, peeled and chopped
3 Sticks of celery, chopped
1 Medium onion, peeled and chopped
1 Can tomato soup, rinse can with broth or water.
¼ Cup rice
1 Tsp pepper or more
1 Tbsp thyme, fresh or ground
Method:
Soak salt beef over night in a bowl of cold water, In a large boiler start the boiling on your turkey necks half full of water or stock/broth.
Drain water off salt beef, then add beef to boiler with turkey necks and pepper, cook for 20 to 30 minutes on a medium heat, covered. Stirring occasionally and removing any foam from the top of the boiler and tossing.
Chop all your vegetables in small pieces then add to boiler with turkey necks and salted beef, cook for another 20 minutes.
The last 10 minutes of cooking your soup add rice and tomato soup, if you don’t like tomato soup leave it out. Continue cooking for another 10 minutes and your soup is ready.
Serve with fresh rolls or sandwiches.
Bonita’s Tips:
Please note, if you don't use salt beef use 1 tbsp sea salt to seasoned and salt the soup. You can use a ham bone or pieces of ham if us don't use sea salt because ham is salty.
Rinsing tomato soup can gets all the soup to use, no waste.
I apologize in advance if anything in this video is not clear or miss read, please follow my recipe when making this dish.

Bonita, I grew up in the 40's and 50's In Kingston Ontario and brought up on a farm by my Grandparents, So happy that happened to me. Grandmother was a great cook like you and back then it was rare to buy things from stores ready to eat so most people cooked at home. I often watched my Grandmother cook and learned lots of things that I have used in my older years. I live alone now for 10 years and cook 99% of my meals.

This is close to my dads Turkey Soup. But I boil the turkey carcass and pull the meat from the bones and put the bones in a roaster and roast them. After roasted I put them in salted boiling water with some apple cider vinegar till I get a good bone broth. The tomato soup, we put in a can of crushed tomatoes and put in some hot sauce and Worchester sauce. We also put in barley to thicken it.

Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! I will be trying to cook this soon! I don’t think I can find salt beef, but I can generally find beef chunks for soup. I can get organic chicken bone broth. I can’t do the Jiggs dinner broth since that has pork in it, but I can get a broth to be rich and satisfying with adding some cabbage to my soup along with the other vegetables. I am surprised you didn’t add whole Bay Leaf. That can make a big difference in the overall flavor to me; its another way to make the broth richer. I might also add fresh Rosemary along with the fresh Thyme. Bless you Bonita! You have helped to fuel my interest in cooking again after my husband passed away a few years ago. I really appreciate your videos!

Looks delicious, thank you for the recipe. I will definitely try it (without the beef tho) ☺️. It's a great thing to use up a part of the turkey that may be mostly wasted, and the butcher would have plenty around the holidays.

On a rainy, cool day in the Midwest, this sounds appealing. Wouldn't have thought to add the beef, though in my definition, those are "chili-sized" pieces.... hmmm? turnips hard to come by in these parts....

@@bonitaskitchen I've had the pleasure of touring "The Rock" twice (2017 & 2018) and particularly enjoyed some meals there. Once, on the north end of the island, at a small restaurant near the Viking settlement..... I had something called... straining to think of the name here.. "bissel" perhaps. It had salted cod and salted pork along with some vegetables but it wasn't a soup. Would love to see you do that traditional dish and I'd try to replicate it here in SW Indiana.

@@bonitaskitchen YES! YES!! That's it. It capped off a wonderful day at L"anse Meadow!. If they can just get that border open again touring Newfoundland even in the rain (on a motorcycle) beats our 37 or 38 degrees with lots of humidity!!! If I can make it at here at home, perhaps I'll imagine myself in the cool breezes along your magnficient coast.

Hi Bonita I made the turkey neck soup and it was so tasty but the turkey neck was so tough what do you think i did wrong I followed your recipe to a T ?
@bonitaskitchen
@bonitaskitchen 2 года назад
Thank you Alma for making our soup recipe and letting us know. Some turkey necks are big and frozen a long time. So next time try cooking the turkey neck longer until the meat starts to break away from the bones. That should help and then follow the recipe for the rest. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. :) Bonita

Is salt beef the same as corned beef?
@bonitaskitchen
@bonitaskitchen 4 года назад
No they are two different types, salted beef it pickled in sea salt, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VGUwVR5gZeI.html this is my link to the method. Corned Beef, peppercorn, bay leaves, allspice, cinnamon, ginger, coriander, cloves, nutmeg and mustard seed you can put garlic as well. If you don't have access to our traditional salted beef you can use a ham bone, or chucks of ham, or just add 1 tbsp of sea salt. I hope this helps and enjoy...... :) Bonita
