Situation Report on the crisis between Turkey and Greece, over the sovereignty on islands in the Aegean Sea. Since the 1970s, both countries have come close to armed confrontation over those contested territories which both Turkey and Greece claim as rightfully theirs according to the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. A flashpoint could happen any moment. What makes things even more complicated is that both are NATO members.

I don't think there is a need for an invasion. Simply airforce plus rocket strikes, until they surrender to terms. Of course, insurgency ,sabotage assassination ect... intelligence agencies stuff. Sound and somke bomb civilians (trucking them). Torpedo attack them. Also perhaps jamming and electronic warfare ect... If they don't go to terms make attacks harder and take control over the rest of Cyprus. But all that not necessary. Intelligence agency can do the job silently.

As an Australian backpacking around Europe years ago I worked in the Greek Islands for about 6 months, wow those Greeks are full on, very patriotic people, I was woken around midnight one night in my hotel on Kos during the Greek airline strike, Screaming jets coming in out of Santorini just above wave height popping up over the beach and mountains behind before breaking left or right just before they hit Turkish airspace at Bodrum, then the Turks sent up their jets, lol wtf is all this I thought, crazy. One thing I know is the Greeks wont let those islands go.

Last time Greece demilitarized an island at the request of turkey was Cyprus in 1967. It removed a brigade meant to protect the island in case of a turkish invasion. What happened? Turkey grabbed the chance and invaded the island of Cyprus occupying it ever since. Now they ask the same of the Aegean islands after they have already positioned an army next to them which (according to their own words) boasts the strongest amphibian assault units in the area. Make your own conclusions...

The hardest operation in Naval exercise is the taking of a island. Any amphibious ships used to try to invade any Greek island will end up at the bottom of the Aegean. An invasion of the Greek islands would be a suicidal mission for Turkey. The Greek islands are so heavily armed that Turkey wouldn’t stand a chance and that is the only reason why Turkey wants demilitarization. So that Turkey can have an easy cakewalk like they did in Cyprus in 1974. The Treaty of Lausanne has been violated by Turkey 1000 times over in comparison to Greece. Any country has the right to defend its borders and its citizens, the Greek islands will NEVER be demilitarized. Turkey has it’s largest Naval force (120,000 troops) facing the Greek islands. Why does Turkey have the largest amphibious installation facing the Greek islands in Izmir Turkey ??? Is Turkey planning on invading China ??? No, Turkey has it’s eyes on the Greek islands and has had its eyes on the Greek islands for hundreds of years. Turkey ain’t getting sh*t ever again. If Turkey starts a war with Greece they will lose their entire airforce and navy fleet within days…not weeks not months

Lol, as per the Treaty of Lausanne, the Islands should be demilitarized so stop pretending like you are doing it only in defensive manners. and I would suggest you check the number of forces of each side again before saying something like "They will lose their entire airforce and navy fleet within days…not weeks not months" If your government keeps treating their neighbor like an enemy and keeps being a good lap dog and militarize that islands by borrowing other nations weapons, this represent a threat to Turkey and since we prefer peace over war you are comfortable talking like this. Your soldiers can play Airsoft with each other on that island while we have seen wars and had massive experiences on the field. @@tanertavlan1769 check again.the lausane agreement says that they cannot be naval bases and no fortification.greece have every right to put military especially when turkey thereats them.ans a little history lesson for you If we look at the case of the southeastern Aegean islands, collectively known as the Dodecanese, they are not held accountable to the Lausanne Treaty as Greece did not achieve sovereignty over the islands until more than two decades after the Treaty was signed. Instead, the Dodecanese are held accountable to the Paris Treaty, that Turkey is not a signatory of. Therefore, Turkey’s insistence on the demilitarization of the Dodecanese constitutes a “res inter alios acta.” According to Article 34 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, a treaty does not create obligations or rights for third countries, meaning that Turkey cannot demand that the Dodecanese islands be demilitarized. With regards to Limnos and Samothrace, the demilitarization of these islands, along with the demilitarization of the Turkish-controlled Dardanelle and Bosporus Straits, as well as the Sea of Marmara and the Turkish-controlled Imvros (Gokceada), Tenedos (Bozcaada) and Rabbit Islands (Tavcan), the 1923 Lausanne Treaty on the Straits stipulated that these areas of both Greece and Turkey must be demilitarized. However, this was annulled by the , which, as it categorically states, replaces in its entirety the Lausanne Treaty regarding militarization. Greece’s right to militarize Limnos and Samothrace was recognized by Turkish Ambassador in Athens at the time, Roussen Esref, with a letter sent to Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas on May 6, 1936. The Turkish government reiterated this position when the then Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Rustu Aras, in his address to the Turkish National Assembly recognized Greece’s legal right to deploy troops on Limnos and Samothrace, with the following statement: “The provisions pertaining to the islands of Limnos and Samothrace, which belong to our neighbor and friendly country Greece and were demilitarized in application of the 1923 Lausanne Treaty, were also abolished by the new Montreux Treaty, which gives us great pleasure.” In exchange, Turkey was able to militarize its islands, the Marmara Sea and the Straits, that they were not able to do due to the Lausanne Treaty. Although Greece has every legal right to militarize its islands to varying degrees, and have done so within the bounds of the Treaty of Lausanne for Lesvos, Chios, Samos and Ikaria, the bounds of the Montreux Treaty for Limnos and Samothrace, and within the bounds of the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty for the Dodecanes, Turkey’s insistence that the islands must be demilitarized threatens to end discussions between Athens and Ankara even before they begin.

Despite that, Article 51 of the UN Chart (which tops any other treaty) gives any member state the right to self-defense, so overall any such claims have no legal grounds. Given the constant threats from Turkey's side, and violations of Greek airspace by the Turkish air force, even over inhabited islands, I don't see how any rational person could possibly believe that those islands could be fully demilitarized, removing any ability to defend in potential aggression. The idea that those forces could be used by Greece for an invasion of Turkey is a joke, given the relative size of the armies, and the nature of those forces, it would be suicidal for Greece to even think about something like this. The Turkish airforce is a joke compared to the greek airforce. They even go as far to say that they can waste a few aircraft to overcome the technological advantage of HAF and take down a rafale. F16V (block82 already arived too). Meteor is the main long range weapon Turkey has to overcome. If you check the army department, Turkey has a numerical advantage but only in troop counts. Both Turkey and Greece operate about 350 leopard 2 tanks, while all the Turkish ones are leo2a4, 170 of the greek ones are leo2a6. 120 of the greek leo2a6 were manufactured in Greece. Greece is the last manufacturer of leo2 hulls left. Turkey was going to manufacture their own mbt but made many failed attempts, now they focus on upgrading their 64 year old tanks. So if a Turkish mbt gets damaged it can be debated how fast or if it will get fixed. On the UAV department Turkey invested far more than Greece on the larger UAVs like tb2, the effectiveness of such weapons can be debated since they are vulnerable to air defences, they can still do damage over islands. In the last few years both the greek government and smaller individual greek companies invested in the development of smaller drones like quadcopters for naval-army usage. On the air defence department, Greece is simply far ahead of Turkey, in fact this was one of the main reason Turkey broke bonds with the US, they were not provided with the same toys. Greece operates everything from long range to medium and short range SAMs. The new FDI frigates will basically be mobile SAMP-T SAM batteries that can cover the airspace of any island in a few hours, including the whole airspace of Cyprus. Turkey doesn't operate any sophisticated weapon that is designed to deal with the latest air defences.

Good video HistoryLegends but you forgot that the numbers of military troops on the ground is not the only think someone should look for but also who has the air superiority, because an invasion on Greek islands means that Turkey has full air control over the Aegean islands, which is not the case looking at both air forces, not just by numbers but also by the real number of active aircrafts, spare parts availability and how the technology of there aircrafts compare (F16 block72 vs F16 block50 for example). The same of course applies for the ships, submarines, tanks etc. So an invasion of Greece is looking very bad for Turkey, about Cyprus it will depend on how Greece reacts if they gonna help by attacking threw Thrace or sending air crafts and troops to Cyprus etc or if they stand still letting Turkey invade Cyprus wich is unlikely to happen because Greece has also there own troops on Cyprus not only Turkey. So for me every scenario is going to escalate into a full scale war except if USA wants to intervene (or maybe the will help one of the two?).

@Lurking Carrier 1. Why would Greece secede claims on the islands wich belong to Greece and have mostly Greek people living there? 2. Why wouldn't Turkey secede there illegal claims on the islands? 3. Turkey does not have the military power to start and win a war against Greece and Cyprus. 4. USA has not the best relations with Turkey in the last 5-8 years, which keep getting worse instead of better (in contrast they have excellent relations, which are getting stronger every day, with the Greek side), so it is unlikely that they would be willing to help Turkey to such an extent and not Greece.

@@quvy338 Well, my point is that the Hittites, the Lydians, Lycians, Carians, Phrygians (and what not): (i) did not have a lasting impact on the world History and civilization like the Greeks had and (ii) had no discernible ethnocultural and linguistic continuity through the ages like the Greeks still residing on these areas (well, up till 1922 at least) had. Note, that I'm not claiming Greeks are a 'pure' ethnic community by any means. Cause that would be absurd for ANY historical nation, for any ethnic community. But you can't argue that there were people who called themselves Hellenes in those parts (Ionians, even the turkic and arabic word for Greeks derive from that) back then and for dozens of centuries straight.

to all the Turkish audience: Treaty of Lausanne 24 July 1923 ARTICLE 13 // SECTION (3) : The Greek military forces in the said islands will be - limited to the normal contingent called up for military service, - as well as to a force of gendarmerie and police - in proportion to the force existing in the whole of the Greek territory. IN SUMMARY : what this all means is that the Greek forces can be legally on these Greek islands AND ALSO in proportion to the forces that exist on the mainland of Greece. THIS MEANS THAT GREECE CAN LEGALLY ADD MORE MILITARY TO THE ISLANDS IF IT WISHES - in order to protect themselves from additional Turkish genocides. Remember that the Greek nation is small, the Greeks do not breed like Turks and rabbits, therefore it is important that Greeks apply self defence to protect their very small Greek islands from the massive large barbarian Turkish hordes and the genocidal Turkish Aegean Army that is 150,000 strong just a few kilometres away from all these Greek small, almost defenceless beautiful islands with very small Greek populations. Your Turkish politicians do not mention all the above FACTS because the TRUTH embarrasses the Turkish nation and Turkish culture. BTW these are the same arguments that the rest of the civilised world is presenting to the pirate nation of Turkey on a daily basis. What you need to remember is that it’s not just me saying all this -- it’s the rest of the civilised world saying all this to Turkey !!!!

Clarification. The treaty of Lausanne includes an Article regarding the islands of Lemnos, Samothrace, Mytilene, Chios, Samos and Nikaria (that these are now Greek), and has a clause around “limited” military specifically for Mytilene, Chios, Samos and Nikaria. It does have an article on the Dodecanese islands in that they belong to Italy. That is it. After WWII the Dodecanese islands went from Italy to Greece - in summary because Italy lost the war… (1947 Treaty of Paris). Turkish officials were there as observers, but were not signatories. So there is nothing unclear with the Dodecanese. Greece does not have any type of agreement with Turkey in terms of limiting military presence on the Dodecanese islands.

What he forgot to tell you is the history that pre-dates what he was talking about. In 1453 the turks attacked Constantinople and occupied the land that they are in at the moment. The Greeks, up until 1821 were slaves for 400 years to the turks who came and occupied their land. So, the modern impressions of what is going on cannot be understood without being aware that turkey has no place over there historically. There’s a small bit of information but, even the names of the cities ate biblical.

11:36 no no no, this is false. The Aegean Islands weren't awarded to Greece in the Lausanne Treaty, but in the London Treaty (1913), and neither were they awarded on the condition of demilitarization. The semi-militarized status was only "in good faith", imposed on both sides but not a condition for sovereignty. Turkey also stopped the demilitarization that it was supposed to hold in 1936, so why can't Greece do the same now that it's threatened?
