My birthcity Parkano. It's small city, but beautiful. Living in Turku since 1987.

Tampere is also nice city to visit. But better to visit Tampere and Turku at summer. Actualy if you travel to Turku from there you´ll need to change train in Tampere anyway. So you could visit both cities at the same trip.

Oldest by far. It was officially established 1229 but it's few hundred years older. Turku's and Åland's archipelago is one of the most beautiful and exciting Finland.

The military vessels are a part of maritime museum Forum Marinum's collection of historic vessels. Those two particular vessels are mine-layers which were the backbone of finnish maritime defense in case "the enemy" invades. But that video you watched definitely had some factual errors and did not show enough. I'm a Turku local so if you ever come to visit the oldest city in Finland and need a guide, i'll be happy to show you around! Got some fair bit of knowledge and trivia about my city as well.

Sodankylä is kinda warm in the summer, but not that much even then. 😂 I still recommend the Sodankylä Film Festival to you!! It brings a lot of people from southern Finland and even other countries to Sodankylä. The "nightless nights" (yötön yö, difficult one to pronounce, haha) are amazing in June, too... in the film festival, in evenings ans nights people gather to sit on the riverside drinking beer and just spending good time together. It's magical! I visited for the first time last year. There was also amazing free music gig from Finnish music artists like Olavi Uusivirta and Tuure Kilpeläinen.

I hope you can visit Turku in the summertime. Not during Juhannus though 'cause it is very very quiet and if you are not specifically coming for the festivals (Ruisrock, Down by the laituri etc.) I'd avoid those times because it is filled with festival people and gets a bit too wild. But it is one of the best summer cities in Finland. Also if you visit the castle, I'd recommend a guided tour as there are some quite interesting stories there...

Best way to enjoy Turku is take 1 night in an hotel or BN'B then take that ship Viking Grace (shown on early in this video) it is one of the newest ship to Stockholm. Take 1 day in Stockholm or go back with the same ship. In Stockholm there's Vasa ship museum, that ship sunk in her 1st mile on her maiden voyage. Both of the countries archipelago is so pretty during the summer =)

Nice. I recommend to visit Turku, but do it in summer. In winter it's as boring as every Finnish city. As you already know after living here several years, the winter is boring everywhere in this country unless you like winter sports.

An addition: I sent my comment before watching the video till the end. After 14 minutes I laughed at your reaction for that speaking of "harsh weather" in the video. You have become a true Laplander and know what is the REAL winter :D :D

Some beautiful clips, but a rather meager image of the oldest town and former capital of Finland. Listen in Google translate to how Turku is pronounced in Finnish, please. One problem with visiting Finland is that tourists get to see other tourists in the summer, while the Finns have taken long vaccations, which they spend abroad or preferably in their own private cottages (mökkis) in beautiful countryside somewhere in peace and tranquility. As an important harbour the Soviets really trashed Turku during WW2. The port was kept open with famous ice-breaking ships, developed and built in the local shipyard. The water in the Aura joki (river - listen to how the name is pronounced again) is brown, because it runs through very fertile landscapes, so it contains rather much soil. There are many museums, theaters, live music, arts museums, churches from different epochs, much outdoor art. The architecture in itself gives a perspective on different phases of Finnish history. Helsinki is only half the age of Turku, and that is very visible. A guided tour will absolutely be worth while if one is a person who enjoys facts and knowledge. Turku is a huge and diverse sports town - skating, sailing, hockey, soccer, running, rowing, even cheer leading, are great in Turku. Tall Ships Race stops in Turku in 2024 and it is spectacular. (Please google). Eating is a speciality in Turku, for example the Swedes tend to come over just to eat at the many restaurants and shop both in the indoors market (Kauppahalli) and the outdoor-markets (Kauppatori). It is not cheap but high quality. Parks in Turku are beautiful, with many age-old trees, many of which have their most northern location in southern Finland. They are truly green lungs, fascinating in every season.

Olavinlinna castle is the most beautiful. Hämeen Linna castle is also nice. You should visit. Btw, we Finns don't even know all our history, and it is because our lovely Swedes destroyed it when we wete part of Swedish kingdom many hundreds of years. For example, 30% of all viking swords have found from Finland, and always from graves with owner. It tells a story how we have had lots of viking culture that time. Lots of things hidden.

Southern Finland does have Northern Lights but it's super rare, saw some actually this winter in Espoo.. like, one night and that's it. done.. so I guess Turku can have them as well, once every 20 years or something like that.. very rare but unless my eyes are betraying me it happened =P

When Finnish ancestors came to Finland they first settled Varsinais-Suomi (Finland Proper in English) where Turku is as well, the Sami people were already in the modern day Finland, but further up north. We then started to spread around the modern day Finland and Western Russia and pushing the Sami people more north (most of western Russia was originally settled by Finnic peoples like St. Petersburg was settled on top of Finnish villages but we later lost those lands to Russia). So the Finns and Swedes pushed Sami people more north and the Russians pushed Finns to the west and we ended up sandwiched between 2 empires (Sweden and Russia) who used Finland as their warring playground for centuries. Finns were slaves, peasants, soldiers and workers to the Russians and Swedes for the most part. Very sad history, the worst known time in Finland is Isoviha (known as The Great Wrath in English) tens of thousands of Finns were killed, raped, tortured, (cities like Oulu and Raahe were completely emptied and abandoned for a couple of years) and most of the children were taken to Russia to be work slaves and sex slaves. St. Petersburg was mostly built by Finnish slaves originally "to be a nuisance to the arrogant Swedes" -Pushkin's The Bronze Horseman poem. It's actually the first piece of literature they teach to kids in Russia of how Peter established the city of St. Petersburg on the Finnish swamps of Neva and pushed away the "wretched Finns".

Btw when it comes to getting interested in Finland, you can get there by getting interested in your own country's history. You know, USA hasn't existed for long (relatively speaking. not even close as long as our castles for example). What American's are, they are migrated Europeans. Of course there are twists to the story, but European history is America's history.

check out a bit of dave cad, a bit of some other popular english speaking youtubers in finland .... not for reactions but for maybe the style and the reactions. i DO get it if you want to have your channel low-key and low effort but sometimes - being a fanboy - it is a bit frustrating what kind of videos you react to. but you do you! i don´t have a problem with that. everyone has the right to make the content they want

The AI narrator keeps talking of medieval buildings but there are hardly any. Finland was a poor country and most buildings at the time were made of wood, Turku burned down so many times and most of the buildings with it. Then in the 1960s the politicians decided to tear down a bunch of beautiful old buildings cause they were too expensive to maintain or something and replaced them with crappy “element buildings” (the Soviet vibe houses). I live in Helsinki (I love it too!) but am from Turku, I still think it’s a lovely city overall and the archipelago is my favourite place in all of Finland, but unfortunately the city is hardly mediaeval in anything but history. Nor are there are northern lights btw Turku is like the warmest and least wintery city in Finland. You should visit Tallinn, it’s only a 2-hour ferry ride from Helsinki and its Old Town truly is OLD and so beautiful. We don’t have anything like that in Finland. There are a couple of nice castles in Finland. Apart from the Turku castle there’s one in Hämeenlinna and a real nice one in Savonlinna (linna means castle.) Savonlinna is by lake Saimaa (biggest lake in Finland) in Eastern Finland, it’s amazing in the summer. If you visit Turku you can take a ferry to the Åland Islands or Stockholm as well.

This video is a bit different, TOP 20 things why the author loves living in Finland. It has a scenery from Pori, the 10th biggest city in Finland, a region, that even most Finns don’t know much about. This video was not best video about Turku. If you want to visit Turku best time to visit is time of Keskiaikamarkkinat ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g9_6QpDNRQY.html ) Then you can visit in Stockholm by Sillja/Viking Line. Päivä Tukholmassa (day in Stockholm) is cheap and you can see thousands of islands and, of course, Stockholm.

If you name your video as a guide, it will be commented on as a guide by Finns. If you react and banter, name the video accordingly and you will get lots of friendly comments. We are matter of fact, deer. And we can have a wonky sense of humor.
