You could’ve gone with 9 speed Advent group set without changing freehub, 46t x 30t chain ring, which would’ve given you awesome range.

Mistake or not...your boys are going to remember this. The time you took. The effort. The admitting of making a mistake(none of us are perfect). The redirection to make a profit. The bonding. That matters the most! Bravo!

I ran into the same thing with the same type of bike. I converted it to a twelve speed and learned what a hyperglide hub was compared to a microspline. Bought new hubs, watched a video on building wheels and rebuilt my rear wheel. It was a good learning experience.

How much I wish I had had a dad like this.

I have rebuilt/renewed/upgraded about 60 bikes in 2020 as an amateur bike dad. Yes it needs the right tools to do such a project and it’s not as easy as most people think.

Amazing job!!! Just incase you run into this problem again. You can swap out the feehub pretty easily. It just uses a large hex key to screw into the hub. You may have to adjust the spacers in the axle but it is a pretty common change to make if needed. Good luck on the next build!

Huge props to you for admitting a mistake, especially on social media. That is a great value to instill in your kids. Politicians and many adults would benefit from this lesson. Your only mistake is not putting down newspaper or something under your work area to catch and see tiny parts that might be unnoticed when they fall / fly out. It would also protect the carpet from any grease which would keep Moma bear happy too!

The crank puller stripped the threads because it wasn't snugged into the crank propperly top tip from a mechanic, use a spanner to fit it into the crank and tighten it as much as you can to get every thread engaged Also with the bottom bracket, for 68mm wide bb shell frames you want two spacers on the non drive side and one spacer on the drive side however specialzed bikes often use a 73mm bottom bracket shell, with these size frames you only use one spacer on the drive side, then if you run a bottom bracket chain guide that takes the place of the last spacer.

So far only a couple negative comments. I think taking a $50 bike + $50 in part and selling it for $325 was totally worth the time and teaching experience. You all rock ♡♡♡

you need to grease the crank puller before using it also make sure it's fully engaged i've taken out cranks much worst (fully rusted) than the one u got there with no problem

Oh man what you did to that original crankset was funny.

You could have completely changed that freehub body on the bike and the hollow axel for another 30$. I have had to do it before. Or just re- laced the wheel with a better hub. It’s not that hard

The treads of the crank puller must be fully submerged and or not visible or it will strip out SIGNED NICK

Best bet is to use pb blaster let it soak and that will work I used it on my seat post

I did that upgrade on my 2019 pitch sport. But i did 1x12 instead of 1 x 10. Also. I used the sram eagle set. Which.coast about 400$

Idk man, id find a new shop if they dont have the tools to get a freehub off. At least it worked out for you though, who ever first sold that for $50 had no idea about bikes or had to much $$$ anyway lol.

a 3x can sometimes be helpful imo, but my next bike i'm absolutely not gonna have one

Do you guys find that fork to have a bit of stiction? Mine works well but its a bit sticky, the action isn't the smoothest. On small bumps its a bit sticky, on large bumps its pretty good.

should have shopped aliexpress get ltwoo or shimano parts for lets than microcrodshify- Please dont cut the steer tube until you ride and adjust and get it to the right height- - you can cut more off but cant add it back!!!!

Lol im putting around $300 USD I got the bike for free. in a 2011 Hard rock MTB. For new cassette, chain, hydraulic brakes and a service.

Measure twice, cut once. it could have fit a 7,8,9 cassette but probably not 10,11,12. No idea why folks want to pay $79 for the Advent X when there are way cheaper and better options. The problem with this is buying a cheap bike and upgrading it where buying a more expensive bike may have been the better option with upgraded parts that someone else did that has depreciated.

@Frugal Fit Dad - I am looking to get my dad a cadence monitor for his new recumbant bike, as he has starting really getting into it. What would be a good option for this? and can you use a cadence sensor on an outdoor bike?

You destroyed the frame of that poor bike with the sledgehammer. Ever heard of simply unscrewing the bottom bracket from the other side and pulling everything out. Or alternatively use a saw? Simply buy a new freehub body and replace the old one. No brain.
