I'm having flashbacks to 1982. My best friend in high school (Chris) had a 1968 AMX with a set of classic Cragars, and his dad had a stock 1970 Rebel Machine. The AMX had side pipes similar to the ones in the video. I bet Chris and I burned up 100 gallons of gas cruising on Saturday nights. Good times.
Having a 72 javelin myself I'm really glad you guys didn't do a LS swap. Y'all did a very nice job fellows. And be sure you wheel is square first before you grind you drills.
I like this car much more than I thought I would. Those big tires in the back, the side pipes, the stance... That thing has me written all over it. I'd drive the hell outta that car.
Some brothers I went to school with had a really nice Javelin with 360, Keystones, AND side pipes. Great looking car! Thanks for keeping the original drive train and NOT swapping to a LS!
This build has been such a roller coaster for me. First the excitement over the underappreciated AMC pony car, then the horror of the proposed LS swap, then the happiness of the change to build the original 304. I love the paint job, I am OK with the pipes, I really hate the stance. I was a young teen when this 'old school' look was new school. My best friend had a '67 Firebird 400/4-speed with the headers and cherry bombs and a jacked up rear end with Cragars and super wide tires. It looked good on that car, this car not so much. I am super glad you kept the Pierre Cardin interior trim. I'm glad you did this car but I wish you had made some other choices.
So glad you stayed with an AMC motor. I had a 70 javelin that I dropped a 401 and tourqueflite in, it turned out awesome. Very nice job guys it brought back some wonderful memories
I was in High School between 1976 and 1979... There were two kind of Cars in my High School Parking lot, Hi Riders and Low Riders. This Javelin looks like it came off the Hi Rider section of the Tennyson HS Parking lot,
I wish they built a 401 for it painted it factory AMC Caravelle blue and used Edelbrock or Offenhauser finned aluminum valve covers. But the car looks bad ass.
Nice to see the project finally finished and some dyno numbers for us to compare against! We very much appreciate the time energy and money that went into this build!
It’s beautiful. Nice job! I learned to drive in my dads 74 Javelin AMX auto 360. I soon owned a 1970 390 Borg & Warner 4 speed Mark Donahue Javelin in my later teenage years. Fat tires on the back, side exhaust, bumper bars on the rear leafs, this is a different model year but it reminds me of the cars I drove and I miss it. I would love this car, someone read my dreams.
I have been waiting to see her finished, she is gorgeous. I want it! I love everything you guys did with it, you stayed classy and cool. I hate the LS swap nonsense everyone else is doing. You did her right. And the sharpening drill bits tips at the end really ended the episode perfectly.
paused @ 15:44 Great Javelin ! Nice pretty little engine in that thing. The car is clean and tasteful great looks and is badass with the chubby tire and side pipes in there. going to make my chevy this nice one day hopefully maybe trade for a javelin because i like em so much i found one 1 time it was a sst too with a 401 only didn't have 5000 grand on me another buyer snatched it up right after i found her. Well, i say build the camaro for now.
I love the look. There were tons of cars on the streets and in the magazine's when I was a kid that had this exact look. It's not for everyone, and some folks may not even understand where it comes from, but it is absolutely era correct and I love it.
Had a 304 w/ a 3 speed in an old jeep when I was a kid. I tried for many years to kill it. Ended up selling it just how it ran when I got it. Had side pipes too! Ha, good days.
Being a lifetime AMC fan, I like the starting point for their project. Can't say I agree much with their choices. Other than buying the core, pretty much the same cost to do a 360 as a 304. with a fair amount more power. I like the period correct Cragar S/S wheels, but would rather keep the tires inside the fender lip. And IMO "pontoons" belong on boats - not muscle cars.
I had Craigers all the way round and a set of rear tires about that size on my first vehicle a Red 1971 f-150 Ranger XLT.....oh and had me a set of traction bars of course......Damn I loved that truck.
Damn! My second car (at age 18) was a red (with black vinyl top and black interior) 1973 Javelin with the 360. Put Mickey Thompson 50s on the back and I can't remember the wheels right off hand. This would have been about 1978. The car had just over 50,000 miles on it when I bought it. Biggest problem I remember was that it went through those Motorola alternators about one per year until I converted to an AC Delco alternator, which worked until I sold it.
Brings me back to when I was a kid circa mid 80's, neighbor kids(brothers) both had 70 Javelins, one bone stock the other a 70's N50's flashback car...both 401 cars.
AMC was way ahead of their time. I'm so glad you put such a great example. AMC AMX IS JUST NASTY AND THEY HAVE BEEN GOING UP UP UP IN PRICE. WHAT BEAUTIFUL LINES ON THIS CAR. I JUST FINNISHED MY 1969 AMC AMX XCODE GO PACK 390 WITH EVERY AVAILABLE OPTIONS. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IT IS. A COP PULLED ME OVER TO TAKE CARS. I LET HIM DRIVE MY CAR. WHAT A SMILE. MINE IS NOT FOR SALE, SORRY. NEAL APOLLO BEACH FLORIDA
I've found the best way to color sand my car was to watch my cousin and best friend do it since they do that for a living. I tried one spot and immediately broke through the clear coat....ugggg. that goes for buffing as well....haha
I remember one of the commercials when a kid is standing next to a BLOWN Javelin and he’s explaining to his father that he fixed it. That was a long time ago. It was a real commercial.
That was my car when I was 16, that I had bought from my parents, only problem it had been wrecked twice, and s bean bag for a passenger seat! Sure would be nice to see what they want for it? Not sure too many people noticed the new hood with the cal induction from the rear of the hood. I kept the primer’d spoiler when I junked the car for $75. Didn’t have a place to keep her while I went to college and raise a family. I’m now 59.
Without a doubt yor were the man with a set of deep dish Cragars on your ride. Still the best looking Non OEM hoops for just about anything. In my humble opinion!
Beautiful cars guy's. Can you please do a 65ish buick skylark with the 310 wildcat? I have a 65 buick special with that motor and would love to see how you would build that specific motor
Hot digady dog Cleetas. The good ol boys of hot rodn did it again. Good ol American foreign job. My 67 chevelle used to get all excited ,and go to barcken its tires when it saw a AMC. "Yeah buddy" Jeepemcoming
Car looks really nice. I just think the side pipes need to be a little longer. They look too short to me. Maybe it's because I had a set of side pipes on a 1977 Buick regal. I measured the pipes and had them come from the front wheel well then the tip exited right before the rear wheel well. So it went that whole length. But to each it's own the car looks really nice
Fantastic build . Could you please give me the rim size and back spacing for the rims and also tire size if possible . Thanks in advance . I liked everything about it . Those that don't well can build theirs the way they want theirs to be .
Lower half of 200 hp is ridiculously low for even the street on a big car like that. You could easily make 350-400 WHP and be perfectly streetable and reliable. I wouldn't spend $40,000 on a car like this just to have a dog under the hood.
those wide tires will hold up to high speeds . car looks dynomite and sound great . My dad owed an AMX Javlin when him and my mom where dating then after they got married 😎🏁
I guess you guys are going for that retro look of the 70's early 80's. Well you differently got it. My 70 Javelin had the biggest tires I could fit, They used the letters back then. L60-15 Yea they stuck out a few inches and looked like crap. Why did you do this? The 71-74 Javelin looks so good with wide tires tucked under. if you get the off set correct 295/60-15 fit perfect. Also go with a 360 same stroke but with a much larger 4.080 bore compared to 3.75. huge difference.400+ HP with the same mods you did on the 304. everything else looks good. hope the next owner gets the stance right. It makes me cringe. Lets ot even talk about handling.
+1 Yeah, they went way too big on the tires. Looks funky. I remember seeing lots like that in the 70s, but that doesn't make it cool. Mostly they were junky Pintos and such with cheap leaf spring shackle extensions, big tires, loud mufflers, and no extra power. They just looked dumb and handled extra horrible...
Turns out, even as a kid I hated those absurdly over-sized rear tires.....seems I still do. Just a personal thing, not knocking it! Rest of that car left me drooling.
My wheels weren't cragers but damn they looked great on my 70 Chevelle' and yes it would smoke the 50's I took a friend for a ride he had a bad ass Nova. after the doughnuts I asked him if he wanted to race he said F??k no!
Why is the engine down so much on torque. Is it the intake, headers, cam? I would think a decent 304 would do much better. AMC engines are usually torque monsters.
