In this video I'm going to show you how to turn your jon boat bench into storage!
A customer dropped off a quick turn around project to me at #brigadeboats to work some magic on. This is a "balling on a budget" project. Something simple and cost effective yet adding to the functionality and fishibilty of the boat. The platform is a #trackerboats Topper 15. I'll show you in this video step by step how to add some storage to your jon boat to give you that #jonboattobassboat feel!
In this video I cover everything I do to turn your jon boat bench into added storage! Video includes: how to gut the rear bench, foam removal, how to cut your hand, prepping inside of bench for paint, framing in aluminum and rivets, paint, cutting hatches out of wood, sealing wood hatches with resin, carpeting hatches, installing offset piano hinges, mounting hatches and decking to boat, installing foam floor, carpeting foam floor, finishing touches, all materials and tools needed, final product, and tips and tricks along the way.
Talking to you on camera helps me not talk to the voices inside my head. Thanks for watching, hope this helps someone with their project!

Nice job. Black reveal is OK. Paining the bulk of the inside white will give better visibility especially at night.

Using the recip saw- hold the saw vertical so that that shoe rides on top of the metal your cutting. This will stop the vibration of the saw and make it controlled cuts easier. 😊

Great clasp. Rigid interior shelves. ru-vid.comUgkxBrJOMRANMI82dPOK0qoDtHhP-JpbErUg Yeah the shelves sometimes get misaligned with their supports in the lid if you don't have the lid fully flat, or you twist the shelves as you're pulling them out, but pretty much a non issue; just reseat and you're fine. Some spools of thread are a little too big and cause the shelves to not close all the way, however with the clasp you can still get the lid locked if the shelves aren't completely collapsed without breaking things ... so far.

Very nicely done. There’s a few things I would have done differently but I only noticed certain things because I watched you do it. You get better each time and we all learn from our mistakes along the way. You figure out what works best and what is the most efficient way to do things. Needless to say the end result you had was awesome. It’s a lot of work. I buy and build John boats and fish out of them for a year and then sell it and then buy another one and start over. In your head you think you can always bang it out real quick and then once you start sanding and prepping for paint you are quickly reminded of how much work it is to build one. I started out with a canoe I got for free. I refinished it, used it a few times and then sold it and used that money to buy a John boat. I then did the same thing and with that money I bought 2 more John boats and so on and so forth. I try to have 2 at all times so I can finish one and fish out of it while I’m building the other and then I will sell one. I’m working my way up until I have the money to buy a nice war eagle or something without having to take any money out of my bank account.

Very nice job! I'm going for the same thing on my jon boat. Just a tip: A skill saw works great for cutting aluminum sheet. The carbide blades go through it like butter. But just keep a firm grip on the saw in case it bucks back on you. Hearing and eye protection a must! Greetings from Alaska. Oh yeah, plywood is $100 a sheet here where I live. Unreal.

I was able to find alucobond at a sign shot for $60 per 4x8 sheet. Did the floor in my boat. 1 3/4" foam in the floor between the ribs. I believe im going to go with a textured paint on the floor. You did a great job trying to get ideas on how im going to do the front deck and put a rear bench back in the boat with storage like you did here. I like how you did the strips of foam under the foam board. For an air gap. Great work.

I loved the video! I made mine a little differently though. The seat lid is just one large piece connected to the aluminum with a piano hinge. It was a lot easier than aligning multiple pieces, and i have more access. It works great on my 14' Jon. I coated with polyester resin and primed and painted with Total Boat polyurethane paint and it turned out great! Thanks for the tutorial :)

I was reluctant to use a machine polisher because of hearing the horror stories. DEWALT delivers as usual. ru-vid.comUgkxfzbDkCRyv3CFXnLZI4APZtRRuG2uRmP2 I watched a couple Chemical Guys RU-vid videos and started with their medium to finish pads and polished. After experimenting on my tonneau cover I quickly Figured out the machine. It is an art. Just spread polish at the lowest rpm then move up to a higher Rpm to polish (not too high or it gets messy) Just keep it moving and let the machine do the work. Do not press down! The weight of the machine is enough. You will have Wax on wax off Larusso quality in no time at all!

Great video Anthony, is it me or are the number of people making videos about how great their new Classic XL is growing exponentially? Does Tracker give them a discount to make a video when they buy one I wonder? And whats funny is how these same folks brag about their new Tracker, but then spend thousands doing upgrades that Tracker shouldve done from the start. Anyone can watch your channel and build a better boat for half the money if they really want to, and add the stuff they want from day one, instead of making a 17,000 dollar Tracker into a 23,000 dollar Tracker lol.

@ernieforrest7218
@ernieforrest7218 Год назад
I will say your work looks very good, but frankly i was floored by your return comment regarding removing the foam floatation. Yes, you are correct in your opinion as to it not being necessary unless the boat flips over. Building codes are implemented for the benefit of the buyer, not the builder. Having been a home builder for over 40 years as well as a boat owner, i can attest to that. Hanging onto a boat that wont sink would be a better option than having the boat on the bottom and nothing to hang onto in my opinion. Coolers stashed in a small cabin have been documented in keeping a boat afloat, and thereby keeping the occupants alive. My opinion is that if you need more space for storage, get a bigger boat or find a better way than eliminating the floatation. For the record, boats over 22’ in length arent required to have floatation. But fact is that many of the better ones do, and for a very good reason. I do have a 14’ jon boat, and i did create more storage space, without removing any foam floatation i might add.
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats Год назад
My response was not meant to "floor" you. I didn't take it as a rude response. The fact of the matter is that I have a large viewership here. A lot of know it alls that feel the need to infere their opinion on my platform. The foam thing seems to trigger a lot of folks. Even though I've proved time and time again on video, it isn't doing what you think it will do. I could go on and on about modifications, weight capacity, howadding extra storage or decking can help it sink if flipped over, ect. We could even talk about modifications and how they aren't universal or regional, depending on the waters and intentions of the boat use. No point really. You do as you please with your boat, others will do as they want with there's. I can appreciate you like the foam. I think boat licenses should be required in all states. I think more guys should wear their kill switch lanyards. I think life jackets will save way more lives than relying on foam in an old aluminum boat to keep you afloat. Just my opinion, apparently, everyone's got them. Thanks for watching even with disapproval of foam removal. Happy boating.

60 gal well? How much weight capacity does a boat this size have? 1 gal = 8.33 lbs.
@fishing_with_TR
@fishing_with_TR 2 года назад
It would be for catfish tournaments. We catch a lot of fish over 40", so most stock live wells are just too small. Hagen Grubbs shows how to make one out of a tool box on his channell, but since I have a jon it would make sense to make it out of one of the benches.
@noahjohns7954
@noahjohns7954 2 года назад
@@fishing_with_TR ya but do the math. 8.33 pounds per gallon x 60 gallon= more than a 14 foot Jon boats weight capacity once you add fishing gear and a motor and gas and an anchor. It’s not logical unless you have a boat designed with one or that can take it. Use your mind before you sink a boat or completely rip the boat in your driveway. That’s putting your life in your hands in a bad way, but you do you boo
@fishing_with_TR

@@noahjohns7954 no worries. I have an 18'. I already use a 64 gallon plastic tote that's modified as a live well. The boat can handle it. Just would prefer to mod a bench for more space.

The benches in my 14' MirroCraft are filled with Styrofoam that in pretty sure is glued to the sides of the bench. What's the best way to remove it when it has been glued in?
@frankorosz901
@frankorosz901 3 года назад
Don't remove the flotation material. That is what will keep your butt afloat when the unplanned disaster becomes the " oh crap what do I do now" right now disaster.

@@frankorosz901 I'm adding in new foam in under the deck. It will actually have a LOT more foam than it has now when I'm done for that very reason.

Question: Do you apply the resin on both sides?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 2 года назад
I used to once upon a time. Over time I realized it really only needed it on the tops where rain water would normally penetrate. For floors you can do top and bottom to protect from flooded boat. It's more material and labor doing the whole thing so you just have to make that decision yourself. Me, I just do tops and sides now. Oil based paint bottoms usually.

@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats I just framed out my casting deck using treated plywood and opted out of using the resin. Is this a bad idea?

is it wise to remove the floatation foam?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats

You only need it if you flip the boat. So to me, its wasted space. I carry life jackets and run a bilge pump in case of leak.

Did it change the buoyancy and/or balance of the boat?

No. Unless he flips it upside down in water. Then things will change...

What was the height of the piano hinge? There are a few options. I assume it was 5/8 as you were using 1/2 plywood.

yes, 5/8
@thomassater3462

@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats I wondered the same thing. 5/8" for this carpet (the thin Home Depot product) seems to work for sure. For 1/2" ply with 20 oz boat carpet (a.k.a. the good stuff), I reached out to Tiny Boat Nation, because I wasn't sure what to buy. They recommended 3/4"-height hinge to me. This seems to be "on target" if I don't cut out the carpet where the hinge goes. The wood is 1/2", and I get about 1/8"+ of thickness from the carpet squashed between the underside of the wood and the hinge, then the glue and carpet on the top side.

By doing this, does it affect the buoyancy of the boat?
@1SevenZero
@1SevenZero 3 года назад
Don’t know if you ever got an answer to this, so figured I would chime in. As long as the boat isn’t flooded then no, because the hull is displacing water (not the foam). If the boat floods then yes, because the foam would then be displacing the water.
