This video is a job we did of turning a large 600mm diameter steel plate ring into a final drive floating seal carrier for a Hitachi EX1900 mining excavator final drive motor. We are using our TM-26120G centre lathe and BM-63VE milling machine. The shop made "Go Go gadget extendo jaws", Kurtis made for jobs just like this that have a large diameter but need full access to the internal diameter for machining.

One of the most rewarding things about this craft is that you take a piece of ugly rusted rough steel and when you are finished , it is a shiny, precise, beautiful piece that is useful. That is something to be proud of.I did this type of work for over 50 years. I would really like it when a customer would return with more work, and give positive feedback on the last job. It seems to me that you know what you are doing because you do it similar to the way I would do it. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming. I really enjoy them.

Ah this was for the final drive I was rebuilding. The old ring was well and truly rusted in and bent trying to get it out. I suggested getting a new one made. Nice work.

I just love BIG. When the part just clears the ways by .060 or .030 and a nice workable TQ100 flame cut plate awaits it's rebirth into a beautiful new piece to get a piece of machinery back in motion is sooooo satisfying. Just can't be beat. Love the jaw extensions. Thanks folks, this is just great !

this is amazing work and is so needed. I've noticed some remarks on other videos that it's cheaper for you'll to make the part and it's faster than ordering an original part from the manufacturer of the machine needing the repair. Very interesting!!! Keep it up as these videos are very enlightening and entertaining. So much skill in this shop, thank you!!!

My dad was Captain in charge of training and to maintain the equipment on the Chula Vista fire dept for 33 years. I remember when one of the fire trucks puked a water pump, it was a Waukasha inline six gasoline motor that had been out of production and there was no replacement pump available, so he and I cast the body out of aluminum and cast an impeller and machined it on his home built milling machine, He retired in 1985 and passed away 6 years ago. I have talked to several Chula Vista firefighters and they ALL knew his name and who he was, a profound legacy. Kurtis, you might consider taking on an apprentice or two. Your skills NEED to be taught and paid forward, I know, I lived it and know how important it is to mentor the next generation.

Nice work Kurtis. This part reminds me of something i was looking to manufacture. Very similar in size but the price vs volume sort of killed the job. As you know customers want prices down with more volume. By the time i purchased the material plus machining. I think it worked out i would be making around $ 20 per hour ???? I will try to find a pic and post it of Insta to give you some idea of what the part looked like. I think i might have mentioned this part to you before ?? But anyway i will post the pic to show you anyway. Making one like this one would be more profitable for sure. Thanks for posting video,s of your work always good to see what your up to. I love the videos and the work you do. I took Metal Shop in High school in the late 1970s and have always loved the smell and the sounds associated with it. I'm a Biomedical/Forensic Photographer, so I know very little about what you do, and I find it fascinating. I always have a lot of questions, but I'm not even sure of what questions to ask or how to ask them. I know some of the terminology and parts of the lathe, and that's about it. The music that is added to these videos makes me want to do bad things to myself and anyone near me. I guess you couldn't use any Rick Astley due to copyright laws. Lol! "Never gonna give you up!" Just kidding. You're singing it in your head right now, aren't you? Lol! It's just annoying to me, and I know it's my problem, but I'm just offering my opinion. I know how to work the mute button, and I will continue to watch, regardless. Cheers, thanks for sharing, be careful, and keep up the good work!

Ok here is how to talk to us machinists (I’m a deluded machinist I have all the gear - top notch stuff but no talent and no machinist balls like this guy who is a legend) talk in terms of five millionths of an inch, carbide cutter inserts, hot metal chips flying, stick welding, tig welding and the melt pool,etc etc , these professionals will see straight through you but the deluded ones like me will nod knowingly.

Another good job and video. I love my bolt on jaw scroll chuck for its versatility as well. Soft jaws are just perfect for soo many jobs, precise turn around location as well as custom extended grippers like for this job. Funny thing seeing you mount a left hand tool in the outboard slot of the tool post to face off that ring. I understand you did it for 'reach' in this case but I've been using left hand tools mounted parallel to the bed to face off, just haven't seen it done before. All the best.
@CuttingEdgeEngineering
@CuttingEdgeEngineering 4 года назад
Hey Carl thanks for watching and commenting. Yeah mate another way to get extended reach if you haven't tried it, is use an internal boring bar upside down on the outer slot of your tool post with the lathe in reverse! Cheers, Kurtis 😎👍
