@goergeerwoll
@goergeerwoll 6 месяцев назад
As a dutch person myself i think both might be true. But also might not. Its subtilly. In The Netherlands people get along well by making harsh somewhat true jokes towards each other. It brakes the ice and you know what to expect from one and another. Regarding ray, i think he made a joke. He wasn't joking about how confronting bday's are. In a weird way when we point out bad things about someone it's a sign of love we care for that person. The closer the person is to you the harsher the jokes. Irony is a big part of our humor culture aswel. So things can be true and there might be some sadness to it but we laugh at it for the same reason. @@mikesmith5391

As a Norwegian, it feels so wrong yet interesting to see the siding attached directly to the framing like that, with so little ventilation between. We always have a gap of at least 25mm, usually 36 or 48mm, between the framing and the siding, which is open to the air top & bottom to allow air to circulate between the layers and remove moisture. The insulation is also held in place by an outside "windbreaker" housewrap, which prevents the circulating air from blowing through the insulation and remove heat Very interesting to see the nuances of building styles across the world!

That is what is done in NZ now too. Typically older houses didn't have it - but they also didn't have insulation, and the timber was Rimu or Kauri.
@tweake7175
@tweake7175 6 месяцев назад
Rain screens are done on new homes, only became code after leaky home syndrome. The house wrap is typically open to stop flapping, it doesn't stop air getting in and around the insulation. Sheathing or rab is used to stop airflow but its rarely used here.
@haphazard1342
@haphazard1342 6 месяцев назад
What you're describing is just a more modern construction technique, which is used in a lot of countries. Scott's house is an old cheap temperate climate build: we have the same style of construction all along the West Coast of the US and they have it in Australia too. All from the same era ~60-120 years ago. In many places the full standoff rain screen isn't required, but a breathable membrane is used on the entire exterior as the primary vapor barrier.
@cv990a4
@cv990a4 6 месяцев назад
I remember visiting NZ in Southern hemisphere winter 50 years ago, and the houses were freezing. No insulation, often the doors/windows were kept open a lot during the day, kids running in and out in bare feet or jandals (flip-flops) and shorts plus a wooly jumper (sweater) - standard operating procedure. That was true of my great grandmother's farm in Taranaki and it was true of my aunt's (then new) construction in suburban Auckland. It was just the way it was. You'd go to bed with a hot water bottle. That's the context for a lot of the construction of that time. Scott's house is from that time.

By the year 2100, that house is going to be a museum, run by volunteers, charging a few dollars to show people around. Perhaps showing them the legendary Scott Brown's last pocket cavity door that he installed, before inventing a new type of door that made the old pocket cavity ones redundant.

I have a 1940’s early early state house and I renovated a few years ago now with complete insulation. It had building paper unlike you so I just put insulation straight in. Has been good and certainly a worthy task. Closed up a lot of the air leaks around the floor and the house has been a lot warmer and drier. Ended up relocating the house too. been in the house for 11 years now and it's hard to find the next one because this one is so good! early adopter of what youre aiming for too. plywood and steel beams, reformatting layout but keeping the look and feel of a classic nz home.
@allanpennington
@allanpennington 6 месяцев назад
Mine is a 1960s direct fix rimu weatherboard in central plateau with building/tar paper behind the weatherboard. I assume its therefore OK to put the insulation directly into the external walls. Plus you can use full width 90mm insulation. The timber used was never gauged in those days and measures 92mm in most places.

Love your channel. Always informative. I noticed in this video that your original weatherboards are edge primed in red lead.A very effective coating but with it's toxic problems, now banned. I also notice that you are a great back and end primer and I applaud that practice. I do find the practise of using water based paints quite alarming as they are libel to allow water ingression and basically serve a reduced purpose.An oil based product such as a primer or undercoat will provide great longevity and help preserve the timber and the work that has been done. Really like the retrofitting of the double glazing.Thank you for all your effort in producing these wonderful videos.

We definitely still vent attics in Western Canada. And use those "hold downs" to keep the insul off the roof sheathing at the eaves... Little different on the wall set up though: we'll have (from the outside- in) exterior cladding, vertical "rain screen" batons, breathable "tyvek" membrane, plywood/osb sheeting on studs, insulation, vapor barrier, interior cladding/gyp board. 👍

I find the thing about breathing, damp etc very interesting. In my country houses are built with 20 plus 5 cm of insulation in walls and 30 in roof. According to our code the wind proofing should be 20x more open than the damp barrier. The houses breathe through a ventilation system that regenerates 90 per cent of the heat from the exhaust air

Ahhh, Kaikoura - heaven on earth I reckon. Boats cancel so think about flying as an option. Helicopter and fixed wing aircraft options both exist, aeroplanes are cheaper, faster and in the correct conditions you can see the whales, dolphins, seals AND throw some mountain scenery and finish in 30 minutes or so. Time enough to walk the peninsular track, eat some kai (food).- I know as I did this for 6 years....and I rate the flight option just as highly as the boats Watch the whales dive below the surface just as the boats do but also watch as they actually swim straight down - you cannot see that from a boat
