In this video, I go through the entire process of building a landing with stairs.
I go through how to work out your stair measurements, how to mark your stairs perfectly onto a stringer, and how to cut and install your stringers for the stairs.
This is a great way to build stairs and this is how I do it for decks most of the time
This is a job I’ve done for JTR Carpentry

The fact he uses manners with an apprentice means everything

I am a builder and I must say that interactions like this with apprentices is extremely rare. Usually all I hear is the carpenters screaming at them all day! It’s a credit to you and the young fella that you can work quietly and composed together like this. Excellent work!

The apprentice is lucky to have a supervisor the cares enought to take the time to make it clear and easy to understand. Great work guys.

I like to pack my waling plate/stringer off the house when doing decks like this. Either window packers or ripped strips of treated setup vertically. Stops water sitting between your waling plate and the brickwork.

At 11:00 why not just figure out the length on the edge of the beam, mark out 5 of that then mark the run and rise? It avoids the risk of small marking errors adding up over 10 marks and means you don't need to peer around the filled on the timber to mark

Exactly. It seems crazy they still use that old system. I've seen loads of videos on yt where their checkouts, say around posts are like 15-16mm out.

Raiser facing as a load bearer, that's weird, the fasteners are taking shear to hold the lazy person rolling their steps off the front edge.

we are required to have min 12mm gap between the stringer and the exterior wall to allow water passing through. It looks that you have the stringer hard against the wall?

I usually find it stronger to put th risers in 1st, then the front edge of the step is better supported on top of the risers
@taniawalker6111
@taniawalker6111 6 месяцев назад
No need to cut stringers anymore when you can buy pre made galvanized ones that last a lot longer and are much stronger or timber ones already pre cut, you shouldn't concrete posts in ground anymore either, you need to just dig the hole fill with proper concrete(not rapid set) then use a post stirrup to keep it off the ground, also use bugles for fixing to posts and galvanized angles in the corners for extra support, you've used way to many nails.
@N1rOx
@N1rOx 20 дней назад
How can you achieve equal riser height if you purchase pre-made? Is it legal to have unequal steps in Australia? I can understand a made to order galv stringer, but not a pre-made one.
@Christopherjamesmurphy21
@Christopherjamesmurphy21 Месяц назад
Good stairs. Not sure im ok with the posts set in concrete though. Personally id rather pour it let it set and drill and epoxy 6x6 or 4x4 saddles that way the posts dont come in contact with the concrete. I like the stringer ledger.
@N1rOx
@N1rOx 20 дней назад
If the posts are treated to H5, they will last between 50 - 100 years. At that time scale, even galvanized brackets can see rust so it's seen as fine.

@DaveDoesCarpentry

I did it this way so that the grain of the decking boards on the landing is hidden. since the top decking boards aren't going the same way as the stairs

Little soldiers would have looked abit better- in my opinion, instead of ripping stuff down for the risers and instead of using 67000 nails I’d be more inclined to use bugles for everything ay but other then that top Job roota

Looks better with the tread nosing over the riser with a slight overhang, would also eliminate to need for that pissy little rip under the large riser board

It's a must nicer finish to run the tread board over the riser , water will pump in that groove and buckle those boards. Looks good tho

Please, this is not how it's done! Set your string lines up and build your braces first! Brace all your posts in place and use that yellow thing behind you called a wheel barrow to mix the concrete evenly and to the correct consistency. Wrong bolts for brick mate, and wow, dyna drilling into brick, and banging them in... 👏 12mm off the building bud --those little clamps are called stair gauges 🙄The end result is shoddy craftsmanship man!
