I have an idea ....23:45....if an aquarium air pump vibrating on a base board can help anyway when curing. Seems ive seen large vibration tables used for concrete molds, and noticed an air pump also causes vibration. Vacuum and pressure chambers are the best to use, but sometimes vibrating table removes bubbles. People also use uv lights to cure resin faster. need molds , chamber, table and uv light.
@barnabyhowesculpture
@barnabyhowesculpture Год назад
Hi there, it's not actually bubbles that cause the issue, its to do with shrinkage of the resin during the curing process. Polyester resin shrinks between 4-8%, so if the liquid resin is hardening and shrinking around an object (the sand plant in this instance) it can cause stresses in the resin which result in a split/fracture. The only way to address it is to slow the curing process in an attempt to reduce these stresses, by using less of the hardener, or pour multiple layers which is what I chose in this instance. Regarding bubbles, because the resin I use takes quite a long time to cure any bubbles are given adequate time to rise to the surface, so are generally not an issue I have to deal with. Thank you for your input though and for watching the video, which I hope you enjoyed.
@quietinspirationcreations3448
Absolutely incredible, new subscriber! Just a tidbit of info, if you put a liberal amount of denatured alcohol around the surface where hot glue attaches (ie. Plant pot or plywood) and wait a few seconds, it'll peel off easily.
@barnabyhowesculpture
@barnabyhowesculpture Год назад
Thank you very much! Yes I have heard that. I use a low heat hot glue that in theory is easier to un-bond, but it certainly fought me in this instance! Thank for watching.

You’ve given me some thoughts about ways I could use this general idea (not copying the actual idea, I totally respect it’s yours) in a tiny format! Hi there, really glad you liked my work. Feel free to build on my ideas in anyway you want. I think the idea of doing something similar in miniature is a great one! Good luck with your creations!

Kudos to you. As I was watching you progress, I really wasn't sure if it would work out but it turned out great. I thought the angled layers wouldn't work but it adds a really cool affect which is kind of cosmic. I also though it was brave of you to sand it free-hand on the belt sander. Sanding it that way and keeping it square must have been difficult but you pulled it off! The final piece looks fantastic and the only criticism I have is the purplish hue of the clear epoxy which is really really minor. Most clear epoxies have some kind of hue but some don't. I also haven't seen anyone use aluminum foil as a liner and it worked very well. I wonder if it would work on large table top pours which would allow you to reuse the molds.

Hi, love your work. The first cast with the thermal cracks can be fixed by drilling through the cracks, thus enlarging the void. This will be large enough to pour resin in and fix the fracture.

Hi, really glad you liked my work. I have tried in the past to fix cracks in resin by drilling into them as you suggest, but I've found that the drill holes are visible after I fill them with resin, and it doesn't always fill the cracks either. When a piece has failed beyond a certain point I've learnt to come at it from a different angle and start again. Thanks for your advice though, and I hope enjoy my future videos!

Love the final outcome! What I also appreciated was that you basically got half way through the first one, the effort to get that far, to then have to start over again. Yes I had to step away from the piece for a little while before I gave it a second go. For anyone who's worked with resin will know, you have to get used to things not going to plan as its a very difficult material to work with. I used to have about a 50% failure rate, but having persisted and learnt a lot of valuable lessons I've improved my rate of success over the years. Thank you for watching and your appreciation!

Hi Pedro, I spent a couple of years at art college many years ago, but it wasn't particularly productive, so not sure how much of an impact it made on me. Everything I've learnt about resin has been through experimentation and problem solving, as I've not yet found anyone else who uses polyester resin in a way that remotely resembles what I do.....or any resin for that matter. I guess that has possibly helped me in the long run, and is partly why I've developed a fairly unique style. Thank you again for your positive feedback, and I hope you continue to enjoy all the videos I release.

New sub here,, doing all the things a sub should do. So comment wise, I keep my failed pieces for a different use. The areas you like in the first casting can be harvested from it. I would cut them off and give them a good sanding and polish, then mount it. This can be sold with the perfect piece. One thing that isn't sold often these years of digital age are bookends. You are handily with a saw so cut your L's from interesting wood or cast them for accent. I prefer driftwood which is very abundant where I live. Mount the casting on a sturdy wire, a chain which you soldered link to link, wood or another casting. Pretty much anything goes as long as it tells your story. With the rest of the first casting, make an "ugly" version or dissect for the best or worst parts. You can sell it with the second one and mount them alike but the contrast can be upped by enhancing the incorrect areas on the first one. With this one, I would add the crushed glass on the outside of the casting with resin and in several layers. This could be done with the hole filling if you are really unhappy with the way it has turned out before. Remember, the "eyes of the beholder". I noticed a comment about how to fill the hole. I use a very small bit then work up two sizes. Use a craft grade syringe. For the hole made by the drill, use a jewelers file to smooth it. Use compressed air for detritus removal. Then, fill the hole with Super Glue, the molecules are smaller than those of resin so you get a more complete connection. Use oil and diluted India Ink to fill large bubbles. Leave a bit of air so the oil, ink and air can move. I It will stain the interior of the bubble eventually but that in itself can be grand. Again, use the crafters syringe. and leave it to dry before filling the hole. If you don't want the hole to show ink, do this really cleanly by not touching the filled bubble, expect not to get the whole thing filled unless you close the crack first. This is all best done with the "hole" side is turned to be on top of the piece. I have one last suggestion, when casting a large, unusual shape, bubbles can hide anywhere. Granted, the pressure pot can deal with these but here is a way to deal with the bubbles you can't see. Life the form about an inch or two off the table then let it drop. The bubbles can be coaxed out with this Cake Bakers trick. You don't want large bubbles in cake so doing this for a bit can really make the piece bubble safe. On that piece, I would have done it a good 10-20 times, at least a few times more once you have stopped seeing bubbles. I hope this helps. I don't often give advice but I have too much time on my hands today, it's a good change. Thanks for sharing this process. I loved it!
@barnabyhowesculpture
@barnabyhowesculpture Год назад
Hi there, thank you very much for all the advice and suggestions. I hadn't thought of using superglue to fill cracks, but you're right in saying that because the molecules are smaller it stands a better chance of running into the crack, I'll certainly give it a go if cracking is an issue again. Your method for removing the bubbles is something I have tried and works well, and I also find using a length of wire to manually coax out any unwanted bubbles or dust can work quite well. Anyway thank you for your subscription, for a small channel everyone helps!

You should have used UV resin to glue the time plant down. With all of that foil the light would easily have bounced around and cured it pretty quickly. Then you could have HELD the plant in place with your hand while the resin cured.
@barnabyhowesculpture
@barnabyhowesculpture Год назад
That could be a viable alternative. I do know that mixing materials into UV resin can prevent it from curing, because they block the light, and I did mix silica with the resin in this instance. I always choose the harder but more guaranteed method for making my pieces, as if something can go wrong with resin it will! Many thanks for watching and I appreciate the advice.

Not to sound like a critic.. You could have made your box (for final pour) out of acrylic and put it in your vacuum chamber and it would have turned out much better.. @barnabyhowesculpture
@barnabyhowesculpture Год назад
Hi, thanks for the advice. I don't tend to suffer from issues with bubbles, because the cure time is so long it gives time for any bubbles to rise to the surface, or I'll degass the resin before pouring it. The main reason I use the mould I do is to accommodate shrinkage of the resin, which for polyester resin is 4-8 percent. The aluminium foil pulls away from the timber boards slightly, shrinking with the resin. If I don't allow for this, either gaps form around the resin and the mould, or cracks within the resin. I've tried lots of things over the years and this method seems to work the best. Thank you for watching and I appreciate the advice.

The final piece is stunning! I've made a couple small (like for earrings) resin things, but I don't think I'd have the patience to try a large piece like yours. I've never seen anyone use foil inside the mold. Do you use that for all your pours like this? It seems to give the resin a pretty smooth surface, which I guess helps reduce the sanding a bit. Speaking of which, I think your handmade sanding tools are very clever, but I wonder how your significant other feels about the gunk in the sink. 😂
@barnabyhowesculpture
@barnabyhowesculpture Год назад
Hi, thank you for watching and glad you liked the piece. Yes I use the timber and foil method for all my resin pieces. Unfortunately polyester has quite a high shrinkage rate 4-8 percent, and the foil allows for this by pulling away from the sides of the mould and shrinking with the resin. It leaves a smooth but fairly wavy surface, so I then spend about 10 hours sanding and polishing each piece...........which is why I've developed some bespoke tools to make this process a little easier. And once I've finished and cleared up you wouldn't have known I'd been there!
