Buttermilk in Texas costs too much. It is almost $4 for whole milk buttermilk. I can make it much cheaper with one cup of buttermilk, some whole milk and 24 hours. It is simple to do, and you don't have to buy new buttermilk again, until you forget to make a new batch and have to start over. It happens. You can make a form of "buttermilk" by putting either lemon juice or white vinegar into whole milk, but that may be okay for cooking, however, not an enjoyable drink mixture. I like Bulgarian cultured buttermilk because of the cultures in it that soothe my stomach lining. Either type of buttermilk is good for meat tenderizing and baking. If you don't like buttermilk, try the Bulgarian style as it is good in ice cream as well as smoothies.
