The 4Town thing is interesting because it's like... a lot of adults forget what it's like to be super into something that your parents might disapprove of. For a lot of teen films it was about romance, having a boyfriend or girlfriend they don't approve of, etc. But in real life it's often more just... hanging out with friends at the mall when your parents don't let you, or going to a concert even if they say it's not "safe". Is it smart? No. Does it feel like the whole world when you're a teen? Yes. And I think because for most adults our hormones are settled down, or we've been through it and know it's not that big a deal, we forget to be empathetic towards how it feels to be a teenager. Inversely, it's also a HUGE DEAL because not being able to experience formative events with your best friends can often be a thing that you carry with you into adulthood. I definitely got into trouble a few times trying to meet up with friends as a high schooler because my parents were strict.

I’m a 45 year old white dude from Southern California, and somehow this movie spoke to me more than almost any other Pixar film to date. I went through some tough situations when I was around that age (12-14) and I had a lot of pressure from my family to be “perfect” and to be the man of the house, and I never really managed to truly discover who I was inside. I became a chameleon, adopting the personality and interests of whoever I was around at the time so I could fit in, and it took me decades to break that cycle of codependency. So, seeing these struggles of this weird little Asian girl in Canada trying to come to terms with and define her own place in the world when everything is spiraling out of her control really hit home for me on a philosophical and thematic level.

The final "battle" represents both how big parents blow things out of proportion and how the past is glorified into utter silliness for the youth. That's why the setting is in the past. We've all had those moments where we recall crazy things we did as adolescents but if we think objectively it probably wasn't that crazy.
@TR-ej5nj

The crazy things we did in adolesecents probably feels so big because the pull away from the mother isn't just you trying to be yourselve but there is a emotional component that your going against as well, which makes those "crazy" things we did feel soo big. If that makes sense!

_I might be wrong,_ but I don't think the panda itself is a metaphor for periods specifically, the movie clearly acknowledges that in its world, periods AND the panda both exist... so it wouldn't make sense (in my opinion!) for the "panda" to be her actual period or representative of it, when a period as we know it (not turning into a giant red panda) _also_ exists within the film. The panda **I think** is just more symbolic of Mei's growth into her own person/growth away from her mother as a major component/result of puberty as a whole. Edited my response for clarification. I said "I might be wrong" at the start of my comment because I only watched the film and was giving my own interpretation of it. I hadn't seen any BTS before this comment, and I still haven't seen the creator directly state "it's about periods" or "the panda is symbolic of her period." If it is then that's fine but that doesn't change that, **to me, in my own personal opinion,** it doesn't make sense for the panda to be her actual period/symbolic of it rather than the different aspects of puberty in general. But this opinion isn't me taking away from the creator's intentions, it's just, again, my personal opinion of those creative choices/my interpretation of what was given. The best part about art is that everyone may interpret a piece differently, regardless of what the creator intended.
@Lauren-zx3gx
@Lauren-zx3gx 2 года назад
It happens while she’s going through puberty so yes, regardless of them coexisting, it’s still used as a metaphor for it. That’s just how it manifests in her family. The overall theme is Puberty, growing up and embracing who you’re becoming.
@llamallama1509
@llamallama1509 2 года назад
So much this! I'm lucky I went into this movie completely blind, but the idea that this movie is periods seems to have taken hold. I've seen multiple reaction videos where the reactors have clearly heard the movie is about periods before watching, and it biases their whole reaction. This movie is so much not about the functioning of anatomy. It's a movie about going from being your parent's child to starting to become your own person and parents learning to accept that. The periods metaphor is so secondary it is really misleading to even mention it. It's a shame because this misconception has really taken away from the movie, and the brief jokes about periods are quite funny if just accepted for what they are, not the central theme but a funny joke that also helps show how much her mother is being a tiger mother.

People seem to overlook the concert thing but the whole point is that even though it's a simple thing, it also represented something like she liked and cared about that was part of her individual interests. Something outside of her mother. The big red panda was a point of Ming's emotional baggage. A big metaphor for that lol 😂 Mei was born in 94/95 so that's why the future was 2002 in the film. I dunno, I think it's a Pixar movie tbh - - it's just a topic that people aren't used to hearing

Same. :) This was a mashup of anime and Pixar storytelling, but because it's Pixar's animation, I think some people are missing the anime aspects. It's filled with anime designs and tropes on purpose, including the typical magical giant boss fight in the third act. And trust, any daughter who's had a mom like Mei's is gonna feel like she's that big, lol. We just happen to be so conditioned by typical Pixar storytelling that when it doesn't fit that mold, it might feel off. And given that the animation styles are *so* different, people might feel it's jarring to see them mixed them together.

I don't think the whole panda thing is simply the beast inside you that you either repress or let out, and that letting it out somehow makes you 'you'. I think its about realizing and gaining agency about your life. Which is very fitting for a movie about a 13-year old kid. Also, GMa, Mom, and the aunts, are still their 'real selves' even if they repressed the panda. Again its acknowledging their decision, their agency in their own life to do what they want. Even if previous unfortunate circumstances led them to repressing it, it shows that these women are at peace with their decision.

And the music for 4-Town was written by Billie Eilish and her brother, FINNEAS (who voiced a member of 4-Town). The reason Ming's panda form was so ginormous was because she repressed her feelings so much. And the reason Grandma was so concerned about Mei transforming so much was more out of concern after her experience with Ming. There was really no other choice but to banish Ming's panda because it was so hard to control (and BIG). Keeping it in a Tamagotchi was a better idea because Ming could interact with it without having to transform into it, so it's kept in check in a way.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason. But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time. (Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.) People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them. If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.

My family used to rent our spare rooms to Asian Transfer College Students a few years ago and I actually got to meet one of their parents when they came over to visit their kid in college. Their father was rather easy going and likable, if we spoke the same language i imagine we would have gotten along well. His MOTHER however, wow, the moment she stepped into our house I knew she was unhappy with us. She was yelling at her son in Chinese about how messy his room was and was cleaning it until 10 pm because they were sharing the room and she refused to sleep until it was clean to her standards. I tried to be polite whenever i saw her and stay out of her way after that. It was very enlightening in a way to see the difference in American and Chinese Parenting, and even between Asian mothers and fathers. Something i always found interesting was how they wanted to help with anything around the house but they also wanted to try "American pastimes" Such as Barbecues, Wine tasting and other things. I think the cutest thing i ever saw was when one of them learned guitar and serenaded the girl he was wooing. It made me smile so much hearing him sing to her.

I'm glad this comment section isn't as bad as I thought it was gonna be for this kind of movie. I think it's a great movie with an important message about growing up and generational trauma. I have two little sisters and they both loved seeing a movie like this. One that doesn't shy away from tough relatable topics and shows what it feels like growing up as a young girl going through life adolescence. And actually I think it's also relatable for really anyone going through changes as they grow up. It's such a difficult time and a universal experience. 10/10

Brave, inside out, Coco, encanto, inside out, and Moana all seem to be very generational relationships heavy in the story lines. Most also about breaking generational repression to be your true self.

7:15 I appreciate this scene soo much now that I'm an adult because I was 10 when it happened to me and I developed early (5th grade with a c cup early) and it's nice to see that they decided to bring this type of topic up. I was lucky enough to have a mom that was very open and honest about things with me.and when I asked questions she would answer it 🤷🏾‍♀️(of course she didn't go into full detail when I was younger but still). And truthfully I think it's what made our relationship as close as it is. I never went the common teenage phase of being embarrassed by your parents and not want to be around them. I was the kid who had no shame hugging her at school to where she was the one complaining lol I had no problem with my mom seeing my phone and I never hid talking to and about boys from her (of course it took me until late 9th-early 10th grade to be really interested in boys that weren't famous or anime characters). The kicker was that she's a pastor. None of my friends could understand how a pastor could be so open and honest. She got along with all my friends.....unfairly so But this movie showed so much of the realistic cringiness that comes from being a 13 year old girl or just 13 in general

i think this pixar movie is probably my favourite visually because it has actually stylized art direction and animation, compared with most other pixar movies which aim for photorealism and more realistic animation. I really think it would have been amazing in theatres. i also think this movie probably has my highest rewatch value of any pixar also, i think the mermaid bottoms are because as young girls in the early 2000s, they couldn't quite imagine what was happening below the waist hahaha. super funny actually

As an Asian, the most unrealistic thing about this more than turning into a red panda is how supportive, affectionate, and mild the parents are. Haha nah, I get. These parents are immigrants, probably by generations. So they softened up. Hehe.

The reason why four is the worst number is because in Chinese superstition, when spoken in Chinese, four and death sound similar.

I watched this with my oldest 7 at the time and she totally got it right away. I think it's important to keep her informed with what our bodies go thru. I have spoken with her friend's parents about it and I am shocked nobody else has spoken with their children about it. Girls now a days are getting their periods earlier and earlier and I would hate for her to get it and not know anything about it.

20:12 She said that because in chinese culture, 4 pronounces really similar to the word "death" and some people even feared the number. So it isn't just a random opinion of hers. Also, if you ever have time, I want you guys to react to this netflix series called "Girl From Nowhere" its amazing and it would be awesome if you guys could react to it!

Thank you for this content 🙏😊 I definitely think this kind of kids movie is long overdue, considering 10-14 is the average age kids experience puberty. This film is a wonderful springboard parents can use to dive into informative discussions with their kids about adolescence. It's time we remove the shame and stigmas that have historically made a challenging chapter of life even harder for many of our youth. Normalizing these experiences that everybody goes through is a vital step in raising well-adjusted, healthy individuals to adulthood. Everything from first crushes, to physical changes, to heightened emotions, to the desire for independence, to the balance of friends and family, etc. is tackled in this film in a way that is relatable and relevant. As an AFAB person who grew up in Canada during the era when this movie is set, I can safely say that I found this to be an authentic representation of adolescence and an accurate depiction of my generation 😊🥰 Keep up the awesome reactions! 🙏😍

Don't be too hard on Tyler. He has rich parents and is spoiled but....he has no friends. He played basketball alone and had nobody willing to come to his party unless the panda was there. And he was a closet case 4Townie. I bet Tyler was very lonely. He was no bully; he was a reactive, insecure, little twerp. They are to be pitied.

Why do people say this film is slow? It barely pauses for breath! I disagree about the concert scene too. The point was to represent a fight between parent and daughter but on a gargantuan level. The generational trauma reached full cycle; Mei hurting her Mom the way Ming had hurt hers. This fight was undoubtedly needed to air out long suppressed feelings which were beautifully resolved in the final scene. A fantastic movie, ridiculously good.

Disney didn't make the food look good. That credit goes to Pixar. Disney are the ones that wanted the movie straight to streaming instead of theaters.
