Turning the giant attic above my workshop into a stock room for bikes. Yes, it has a fire pole

Did you know that there is an attic above my workshop? Well, there is, and it's enormous. With the recent completion of a staircase entering the attic from the outside, I'm putting it to use now to store bikes, parts, and tires. We also have a very interesting way to get back down to the workshop.

Seth, on your 2x8 comment for wheeling bikes up the stairs, one way to avoid your daughter playing with it is to have it hinged off the banister rail, that way you can have it in an upright locked position when not needed, and then when you need to use it unlock it and flap it down onto the stairs, you can even make it look like a facing board for the banister.

I was thinking just putting a gate at the bottom of the stairs. This way they are completely closed off to the kids when he's not up there. I'd also be wanting something around the firepole at the top to prevent any kid from falling through accidently.

Your videos helped get me into engineering. I watched you and Alex convert his van. I started watching your guys videos and that got me into mountain biking. Eventually my bike broke, so I watched your videos and park tool to fix it myself. This lead to me taking apart my bike and putting it back together and then I decided I wanted to design things and be an engineer. I’m now at Purdue Engineering which is one of the best engineering schools in the country, and I love it here. So indirectly your videos changed the course of my life. I love how you customize your house to match your personal needs, I remember when this was just a garage for three cars. Most people would have just kept it this way not even bothering utilizing the attic. You should cut those bolts at the top of the fire pole before you hit your head on them. 🤕😅

I 100% agree with giving old stuff new life. I recently got a 20ish year old Marin that I've been using to get around town because my ebike is in need of repairs I currently don't have the money or tools to do myself. Fantastic idea Seth, that's a HUGE space to utilise, and who wouldn't love a firepole to play on :) Maybe worth making the door at top of stairs taller so you don't have to duck every time?
@mtrx9816

Maybe it'd look weird from the outside, having this tall door real close to the roof? Idk it would for sure be more comfortable than ducking but I guess that could be an issue.

There’s always another optimization! So far on about 40 trips in and out I hit my head 2 times, so by the end of the year it should cost me 12 to 14 head impacts, or whatever it would take to make the opening bigger. There is a light and a fair bit of framing above the door and so it might not be possible to improve it much. Luckily I can just climb the firepole with plenty of headroom.
@ShamusConeysFilms
