"And we're already getting powerups! And we've already got a spread gun! And we're already dead!" :D
This week for No-Nostalgia Retro Gaming the votes are for "Turrican II", another run 'n gun platformer and sequel to the original Turrican which we've seen prior, developed by Factor 5 and published through Rainbow Arts in 1991, making it one of the later C64 releases.
...it's also MUCH harder than the original game... o_o;

A lot of us would put the C64 on the floor and press space with our foot for games like this and Commando (the grenades).

I don't have and never had a C64, but I imagine that's what I'd do.

Using the space bar as secondary fire button was very common on the C64. In emulators it is a good option to map the space bar to the secondary fire button.

The C64 Datasette controls are all mechanical, so no, the C64 can't make it rewind. However, the C64 can stop and start the tape while the play button is down, so as long as you're progressing through the levels, you don't need to touch the controls. But yeah, if the game needs to rewind, you need to press the buttons manually for that. The Datasette has a tape counter on it, and people would note which levels started at which positions, to avoid rewinding or fast forwarding too far or not enough.

I wonder if some of the bugs (powerups disappearing, losing reflection) could be due to the crack.

You didn't generally hold Commodore 64 joystick in your hand, it had suction caps on the bottom and you would put it on the table next to the computer itself (about where a modern mouse would be, to the right of the keyboard if you're right-handed). So pressing keyboard keys was a no-brainer, a lot of more advanced games required that. As for joysticks being atrocious - I wouldn't say they were particularly atrocious, but they did wear out the contact pads rather quickly. Despite me being 13-14 at that time, I very quickly learned to resolder them, as new joysticks simply were not available where I lived, I had to use what I got with the computer.

From what I remember of the Vic 20, the dataset could be controlled by the program in game. However once loaded the game, the game or manual would tell you not to press stop button as the program would stop the tape itself. So this resulted in playing with the play button down. When the program needed to load, the program would send a command to proceed playing or loading further game data until not needed. This was only used for the Play button, no other function was possible, no rewind, no ff etc

I personally found it super funny when the game suddenly decided to basically turn into Syobon Action (aka Cat Mario) after the 1st level. Turns out that this genre of difficulty for the sake of hilarity dates back to early 90s!

This is the type of game where you are expected to do multiple playthroughs. It's very difficult, but once you get accostumed to the flow of combat and begin to explore and learn where all the 1ups are (there's a LOT of them!), you'll see that it's easy to bargain your way out of even the harder, more troll'ey stages. The main Turrican trilogy are some of my favorite games of all time, it was really fun watching your first impression of it with these blind playthroughs lol

That's kinda the whole point of the series really is to give a fresh take on retro games I've never played despite being into retro games, and since I have so little past experience with the C64 that makes it a prime candidate for all of this! :D

It's an interesting port, though I wished they could of covered the Amiga tracks on the SID (I know others have since). Never played any Turrican game as a kid, but later through emulation as an Adult I did find this one on the difficult side. Kid me would of called it 'broken' and moved on to something else, instead of sticking with it :/

I know most people think of the Amiga version as their go to- but my first (and really only!) means of playing at the time was Universal Soldier on the Megadrive/Genesis! That was my entry into Turrican 2~ it's a shame though they did some ..interesting.. respriting, gutted out the shooting stages and replaced them with generic platformer stages loosely based on the movie... Ah yes.. the movie...where Luc Deveraux goes into an alien themed labyrinth, water flooded catacombs and fights a giant Andrew Scott about 6x his size... Just like the real deal!

Turrican 2 is one of my favourite C64 games of all time. I guess I just played it so much that the foibles and difficult parts just faded away in my mind, I always felt it was super playable and despite me being generally not great at games I was able to complete this multiple times. Do miss the Amiga music tho.

The sfx are seriously burned into my brain, haven't played it for 20 years and I remember them all. Also having the "keyboard" right next to the joystick was the default, so no big deal with the spacebar :)

Still waiting on the game that makes you play it twice because it was developed by two different companies for two different publishers, for two different markets.

You make a compelling argument except the whole point of this series is to cover titles released on the c64, not the Amiga.

@EdmondDantes224

@@Rabbitlord108 I actually would agree with him. Also, another thing that bothered me is they actually made two Turrican sets. for a long time, the more fully-featured Turrican collections were a physical-only release, and the eShop only got something called Turrican Flashback. I bought that thinking it was the best I would ever get. Then the two Collections came out on the eShop and I had to double-dip. They tried the same crap with Wonder Boy, putting out a lesser collection first before later putting out the better collection. This time though, I had the Turrican experience behind me and did not fall for it.

the funny thing is that Manfred Trenz actually considers the C64 version to be his "original version" to paraphrase

Turrican always felt like it would be a MUCH better game with s. But the whole "Health drains constantly when enemies touch you, enemies don't die after dealing a set amount of damage, little tiny green spider can just get into your hitbox and kill you in 0.25 seconds with you being unable to do anything about it" always bothered me. As a kid, I didn't have a C64, but I did end up with a Turrican game on the Game Boy. And oh boy did that little spinach green screen HAAAATE scrolling! Had to constantly start and stop, inch my way forward, with no idea what I was doing or where I was supposed to be going. I think the buzzsaw ball thing was limited, too, only being able to use it three times. ...I never got far in it.

in a time, where every game was tiny, and included a tiny operating system on the same disk, good jumping controls were a luxury.thi s game was not really made for most simple joysticks.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 4 месяца назад
I wouldn't have been so hard on that aspect IF NOT FOR THE FACT that the original Turrican already showed up earlier in this series and its jumping controls were PERFECT. :P

Im not from the age of those computers so i need to ask: which was, exactly, the version of turrican that made it a classic? I know it wasn't the 16 bits and those are considered very low quality, so how it happened?
@BeyondTheScanlines
@BeyondTheScanlines 4 месяца назад
I don't think it's that odd to be playing C64 games (or any old-school home computer) games close up to the keyboard - there's a lot of games which use secondary key controls after all! Though using the full keyboard can be a mess - you're essentially reading the hardware port directive, so implementing options to redefine them and what not would be a mess. Plus the lack of being able to save them might get in the way! As for why they chose to crack the tape version - I would have thought it might have been easier to source (or easier to replace the access routines over the disk version). The one thing missing is the intro sequence, when I won't lie is a tad meh on the C64 (but nicer on the Amiga unsurprisingly).

"we have metroid at home, on all other platforms, except it i better than the nintendo metroid" even... the zx-spectrum version of turrican2 is pushing the hardware even more. it has smooth scrolling, that halts on grid-edges, and that is too low frame rate to be very smooth

Does the game have keyboard controls too? Or do you _have_ to use both joystick/gamepad and keyboard?
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 4 месяца назад
I didn't check, but from what I understand, unlike with DOS where you can mess with stuff to put your own keyboard handler in place over what the BIOS provides, that's not really an option on the C64, thus the keyboard is wholly unsuitable for most action-based games. :P

Engh...? I didn't find it offensive or anything and I'm generally pretty picky about platformers in terms of personal enjoyment, so while this game's objectively "good but hard", subjectively it's not something I would want to play for long periods of time. :P

I never liked how you're constantly collecting weapons and changing them through the game, it's hard to avoid the need to collect everything so I always end up with a weapon I don't want.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 4 месяца назад
For games like that I always take the approach of, "Make the most of what you've got." Most linear games with auto-weapon-switching when collecting new weapons are generally made to be beatable with the most basic weapon available, since otherwise the game could literally become impossible. :P

As much as i love turrican, i despise the time mechanic. Really defeat the purpose of the exploration nature of the game.

Time limits really are a holdover from arcades and for the most part have no place in modern games outside of challenge or competitive mechanics. :P
