Betaflight 3.2 and BLHeli now support Dshot Commands. Two of the most interesting Dshot Commands are "turtle mode" and "esc beeper" mode. ESC beeper means the motors beep when you flick a switch, so you don't need a separate beeper to find your lost quad in the tall grass. Turtle mode lets you temporarily reverse your motors so you can flip back over when you crash upside down.

A FEW IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. Until Betaflight 3.2 RC6, you need to go to the CLI and type "set small_angle=180" to make turtle mode work. I do this on all my quads as part of my default setup so I didn't notice it was necessary. This will allow your quad to arm at any angle (even if you are carrying it in your hands) so be careful.
2. If you aren't using nylock nuts, you are more likely to unscrew a prop when using turtle mode.
3. BLHeli_32 does NOT support Dshot commands by default. I tested this on an RTF quad with _32 ESCs but apparently they were already flashed with the correct firmware. If you are running BLHeli_32 you need one of the firmwares from Github to support Dshot Commands. You can download them here:

You need to flash either the Wraith .hex file or the Spedix .hex file depending on which one is correct for your ESC. Use the "Flash Local File" option on BLHeliSuite.
4. BEEPER MODE WILL MELT YOUR MOTORS if you leave it running too long. Don't just set it on and leave it for 3 minutes while you search for your quad. Flip it on, let the motors beep a few times, then listen and turn it off.
5. If you are trying to do Dshot ESC Beeper and it's not working, here's a likely cause. Betaflight RC6 added a feature to let you choose to use your regular beeper instead of the motor beeper. So by default, the motor beeper is turned off.
If you want to turn it on, go to the CLI and type:
set beeper_dshot_beacon_tone = 1
save

I'm not sure when they added this but, you need to use the CLI command set beeper_dshot_beacon_tone = 1 - 5 to get the motor beeper to work in The FB3.2.0 STABLE release. It is set to "0" by default and will not beep.

After watching this video I set up turtle mode,just for fun. Then yesterday I flew my kwad into a locked up tennis court on a Sunday . Then I remembered turtle mode I flipped my kwad and flew it out of there. Thanks Joshua you saved my day .

I love turtle mode and it has saved me a lot of walks. Additionally, it is sometimes very effective in loosening the quad from a tree branch as you can twist it off a branch, getting a rotational moment instead of just a straight vector. BUT, there is a disadvantage also which is in certain cases the reverse direction unscrews the propellor off.

Was pleasantly surprised to get this working on the Wizard X220 I had picked up during BGs anniversary sale. - SPRacingF3 - Betaflight 3.2 RC-5 - set DShot 150 - BLHeli 16.67RC [blheli-multishot] Both the esc/motor beeper and "turtle mode" work as expected once switches are assigned. I unfortunately spend more time upside down on the ground than I do in the air as I'm still really new to acro so this is an awesome add-on!

Again, thank for the awesome, informational video. I didn't think my ESC's supported DShot without removing caps but after watching your video I tried it and discovered that they seem to not only support DShot, but DShot 600 at that (yet to fly though). I can't get the beeper to work, but that's fine.

Thank you so much. Now have beeper and turtle mode on my Wizard x220. (I am less than 2 months into this). One cautionary note is to flash the ESC's *BEFORE* upgrading to Betaflight 3.2. The passthrough was messing up on SPF3 when using 3.2, but was fine when on 3.1.7.

that's only if accelometer is turned on? I have no problems without setting small angle with acc off.

If accelerometer is disabled then small_angle doesn't work, so it doesn't matter. You do not need the accelerometer on for it to work.

Hmmm... I've done everything in the video, as well as this here even though I have the accelerometer off, and when I switch the mode into the on position, the quad doesn't seem to do anything, it remains disarmed. EDIT: Nevermind it works now. I didn't understand that you had to disarm, turn on turtle mode, and re-arm... I had it setup where SwD-up was prearm, SwD-mid was nothing, and SwD-down was turtle mode. I thought I could cheat and keep it all on the same switch to save time. Instead, I took out pre-arming and promise to be careful. lol

Joshua, thank you for this video! Finally I've flashed my Matek F405 with BF 3.2.0 RC5 and Racerstar Lab 28A with BLHeli_S 16.63. Turtle Mode works with accelerometer turned on and small_angle = 25 (by default). Beeper works as well. No problems so far :)

Having used turtle mod on kiss for a while, it is great, I find the greatest advantage of it is getting the quad out of trees. Reversing 2 props at a time seems to work 90% of the time for me. so much easier than ropes, poles and climbing.

For some strange reason my f3 micro omnibus 20x20 does not want to go on boot mode or is recognized when i start it with the boot on a wire tuching. ill figure it out tho.

There's one more thing needed that isn't mentioned in this video. It might be obvious or common sense, but as a begginer I didn't realize I had to have the Arm Angle set to 180. After that, everything worked like a charm! Thanks for the video.

You definitely don't need arming angle set to 180 to use turtle mode. This was an issue a long time ago in like betaflight 3.3 or something, but it was fixed quickly.

Okay, I'm so freakin excited right now!! I had been running firmware 16.63 DSHOT in blheli_s! The buzzer wasn't working! Ok let me start over. I just finished this new build just for Betaflight 3.2 and I had been having nothing but problems with the tune! On punch-out's the kwad would jitter and shake like a cold wet Chihuahua!! I had to go back to 3.1.7 just to make it flyable!! Today I tried 3.2 again and figured I would mess with the filters, and take advantage of all 3.2 has too offer! While messing with getting the buzzer to work I had to flash blheli_s 16.67 multishot protocol, I got the motors beeping! I decided to have a flight to run the pack dead and to my amazement the F/N thing flew GR8!!!!!!! I'm assuming that it was my esc's not working right with that blheli_s!! I have Mr.Bardwell to thank for saving my ass again!!!

Got Turtle mode working on my Flight Test Gremlin. The first time I used it, I flipped over and managed to take off, on a soccer field cut short. The most surprising part was when I spun around and found out that I was on the opposite side of the field than I thought I was. The Flight Test Gremlin is about the size of a baby hawk, and all black. That would have been a fun one to find. Turtle mode saved me on this one.

In Betaflight 4.1 you must also enable RX_SET in the configuration > Dshot Beacon Configuration section to enable your motors to beep. And remember to plug your battery

I've been using 3.2.0 RC5 for 6 weeks now with 25A BLHeli_S quadrants. I've had these options. Before I connected my buzzer the ESC's would beep if I hit buzzer mode. They also beep after 5 mins of inactivity which saved me a quad a number of times before I added that oh sooo useful buzzer. Omnibus F4 V3.2.0 RC5 is dated 7-31-2017

Hi Josh You have to exten this Tutorial with enabling DSHOT Beeper in CLI! In the Final Version it is necessary to enable beeper_dshot_beacon_tone = 1 to 5 (diffrent tones) cheers

The ESC beeper was standart in blheli_S I think its called beacon or something...but now you can activate it with a switch and don't have to wait 1 minute before it starts beeping!!!! And the turtle mode is also a pretty nice feature! Nice video!

I guess if you have enough aux switches it might be worth while but personally i just use the beacon feature and save the aux switch i havent found motors to get warm with the beacon default settings and if you loose your fc receiver or something beeper on a switch wouldn't work. I would leave the beacon on like 5 minutes still if your using it on a switch as it could save your ass still.

ESC beeper has been around forever, was already in the old blheli. On older firmwares the beacon activates after a set amount of inactivity. With dShot commands you can now flip a switch and enable the beacon/beeper. Its the same thing as turtle mode. Your ESC's always had the ability to reverse. It is only now that you can "flip a switch" and change this setting with your transmitter.

Correct about just adding beacon to a switch, but wrong about turtle mode. Unless you were already flying in 3D mode, you'd have to get hook up your quad to your computer, run BLHeli Suite/Configurator, just to be able to reverse or run bidirectional (which also needs 3D mode). Moreover, you apparently don't know how turtle mode works in BF 3.2 RC5... it only spins the to motors on the side that needs to provide reverse pitch. Watch the damn video.

Just a quick heads up for whoever is trying to get the beeper to work and isn't making any progress after 1: you set up the remote to send the signal on the right aux channel and set up BF for beeper (and you see the signal moving on the screen) 2: you attached a battery (props off!!) (since it doesn't work without battery) 3: you verified the ESC's can run the DSHOT commands in BLHeli Check the configuration panel in Betaflight: there might be a switch somewhere that says 'RX_SET': You need to enable this as well! RX_SET is a flag that enables the beeper-mode you set up in the modes channel ;) Good luck! Thanks for everything, Joshua!

Hi @Joshua Bardwell Fantastic video as always :) I got the turtlemode to work like a charm. No problems at all, but the beeper grinds my gears. When I flip the switch the light on the FC lights up, but that is all I get. No motor beeps. Keep up the awesome content.

Thanks for pointing out the risks of burning motors with turtle mode... I think I will use it only sometimes...Usually when I crash the prop on one side gets "unscrewed" due to the direction of rotation. If I start flying again without fixing that loose prop.... terrible noise... I do like the beeper though...

For those without a go pro on top I've mounted 2 light plastic rod that's not breakable if crashed hard one in the back and one in the front. Zip tie it to one of the standoffs and stick glue it if you don't have glue use a fat zip tie like the police use then clip the rest off. So now when you have your goggles on you can see which way your KWAD is leaning to and do turtle mode from there

So I’ve figured out how to set up channels and switches. For the Mobula7 tho will all these steps be the same? Also I can’t really figure out how to get the telemetry working with my FlySky TX. I have it enabled, but under the modes tab, do I need to assign it to a aux channel? Or if I leave it on Auto will it just read stick commands? And then for the telemetry output where I pick the version like FrSky and all those, would I choose IBUS?

Hi Joshua, I have done this update on my quads, and I'm running DShot 300 on my ESC's (installed BF3.3.0), and this feature is working but in order for it to work correctly the drone must spin the selected props in the reverse direction to push that side away from the ground. However, mine are spinning in the correct direction so if I apply power to the props that are free and clear of the ground, the props spin but of course because the are not spinning in reverse, they immediately pull themselves into the floor, and the quad cant turn over. Any idea why this is happening, other than that, the drone fly's and performs perfectly. Please let me know what you think. Thanks so much Anthony

the antenna your using is it any good if you pull the red cap off the wire looks like it has just been cut is this bad for reception and could it burn a vtx out i only ask as i was using them and had problems with vtx's burning and bad vid feed

Mr Bardwell, i am building a 3in quad with CL Racing f4 mini. i just noticed there is no place to add a beeper. is there any way to add a beeper to that fc? or can d shot beacon make my tiny 1407 motors beep lowed enough. like how my 2208 motors beep on d shot beacon. or do i just need to get a different fc that has a beeper pad. this is serious for me as i have lost many quads in the past so i truly need your help. Thanks.

I think you need to assign the beeper resource to the ESCs and set one of the tones with this command: "set beeper_dshot_beacon_tone=4" Change the number to change the tone.

Got it. Was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why the ESC wouldn't beep. Really appreciate your videos. I just started flying a few months ago and every time I've had a problem one of your videos has saved the day. I just built a 3" armattan japalura with an f4 all-in-one FC and it was flipping all over the place when I tried to fly. That video you made on resource mapping the motors was the trick. Great video! Quick question.. does the esc beeps not work when you also use a normal beeper? I set the beeper and only the actiual beeper beeps.. not the esc's... I use blheli32 wraith escs.. another question... are you going to make a in depth video about blheli 32? There arent alot of video's about it.. been waiting for it for ages:p.. pretty sure more people are:D anyway.. keep up the great work!

If motor beeper is set up just like a traditional beeper (same tab same line) how do you not use motor beeper and still use a traditional beeper? The Matek beeper I like using is way louder than any motor beep.

I tried putting the beeper and turtle mode on the same switch position, as i can't use a momentary switch and wanted to know when the quad was in turtle mode, made it do something random. sometimes turtle mode would work, other times it would go into turtle mode but the motors would not go into a reverse spin, so the quad would just pull itself into the ground when inverted, instead of pushing one side up. Ive taken the buzzer function off of that switch position now and turtle mode seems to be working consistently so far... this is with a holybro kakute AIO F4

ESC beeper can't be used while the motors are intended to spin. Beeper should really be disabled whenever armed.

I run BL Heli 32 and I have a beeper - is there a way to tell the FC to use DShot not the beeper. Beware with the turtle mode. It's probably not so bad with teh RC5 version but even so be careful. It's probably a good idea to put the turtle mode switch on a double arm switch. I've tried to take off a couple of times when the pre RC5 dshot motor reverse switch was active and it wasn't pretty for the quad. In fact yesterday I did that and the quad came back, hit me and cut me. incidentally one of the things I've been doing tonight is programming a double arm for that mode's output on my Taranis.

Hey JB i didn't know where to post a question to you so i used this video here.My problem is that i have an HGLRC Arrow3 4s quad and all the endpoints are at 1500 and tuned in very well but what happens is when i hover and release the pitch stick the quads nose points downward and picks up speed until i barely touch the pitch stick a tiny bit down and then the quad will level off as long as i hold the pitch stick but once i let go it does the same thing.I can sure use your expertise because iv'e hit a wall!!Thank you sir and i love your videos!!

@@JoshuaBardwell Thank you JB trimming the ACC via BF stick commands did the trick.I had to enter and save the command about 2-3 times before the FC decided to accept it so now my Arrow3 4s flies nicely and the nose doesn't point down when flying.I had to enter the command about 2-3 times before the FC decided to take the commands so i'm very happy with the quad now.Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to help me your awesome!!!Harry Lato

Hey Joshua, I installed URAV Beep in my kwad, in betaflight I made the correct voltage and amperage adjustment for my batteries, but the URAV does not follow the parameter established in betaflight, it beeps when the battery is still full, like 4.0 per cell, like me I configure it to beep when the battery is 3.5 per cell?

I got a conventional buzzer on my quad which can be activated by a switch. How does BF 3.2 distinguish between a conventional buzzer and between beeping with the motors via dshot-command? (just tied it and motors don't do anything, but conventional buzzer works.)

Ok so mine works...kind of...it really ZIPS over quite fast nothing like in your video. Yours seems to be more controlled. Mine acts like its going (for lack of better words) full throttle? These are Cicada 30amp with BB2 ESC's that claim to support DSHOT. Testing basic flight flashed with 16.67 and using DSHOT 600 everything at face value flies well. So should I drop it to DSHOT 300 instead of 600? I'm assuming that if the esc's do not support DSHOT they wouldn't work or at the very least not work well to the point to where I would see this out of the gate during test hoovering? Thank you

Hi joshua!!! Any idea about why when i'm activating the turtle mode, the buzzer start ringing?... it's really annoying!!! I mean the physic buzzer and not the esc "simulation"!! Thank you very much in advance for your help!!!

My turtle mode is kinda weird when i activate it. The motors spin in a different direction any ideas? Instead of spining clockwise is spinning anti clockwise.

So I have TBsS bullet 25 amp ESC's and radix PDB. My motors will only run on MULTISHOT. It says the ESC's are DSHOT600 compatible but I cant get it to work. would love to have turtle mode but i cant apparently :( is there anyway to get DSHOT600 working in my case?

Yup. Its pretty neat. Flash ESCs with version 16.65 and set the tone volume to 91 thru 94. Write setup and use 91 for the star wars imperial march tone. I am working on editing my own tones, but my current computer cannot handle the task.

I am currently running RC5 and 32 bit ESC's but when in turtle mode, my motors spin in the normal direction and any input I give it just starts digging a hole in the ground. Any suggestions? maybechange motors to bidirectional in blheli32 fix this?

Im using a stack-x from eachine and his firmware is a fishdronef4. Opening BLHeli and read setup appears 16.7. When I enter the flash screen appears several versions but not 16.67.

THIS VIDEO IS FROM 5 YEARS AGO setting up a beeper and turtle mode is easy now, and is just an option in betaflight 10.9.0 and you dont need these other apps like BLHeli. please watch a more recent video also dont run the beepers for too long or your motors can AND WILL burn out.

Could someone help me? I have Turtle mode setup with D shot. When I am flipped upside down and going to Turtle mode my Motors are pushing me into the ground not away from the ground. So basically it's doing the opposite of what turtle mode is supposed to do. Any help would be very appreciated thanks.

I set my quad up for turtle mode and beeper for motors but my motors will not beep. I have X lite pro transmitter and I use the temporary button not a switch, is that the problem?

I haven't been able to use any of these modes with BLheli_32. You mentioned BLHeli_32 already has command feature available by default. Have you been able to get this to work on your BLheli_32 builds?

I did test it on a _32 build and it worked but I was wrong to say that it works on all _32. You need to flash one of the hexes from this zip file to get it working: 1drv.ms/u/s!Al4b3QGPtgasmKwONsizGMLypM31vg Use either the Wraith or Spedix .hex file depending on which your ESC takes. The ESCs I tested on must have already had this hex on it and I didn't realize.

Will the BLHeli configurator pass through the FC to flash the ESCs? Or do the ESCs need to be connected directly to the PC (maybe with an FTDI or similar board) for the configurator to work with them?

Passthrough works on almost all modern FC.

I was running turtle mode on 4.2 and smoked 2 motors and two fets on my 4in1 esc.. Now I'm scared to do it on my new setup any idea why that happened?

I know it's an old video and if you don't get this it's ok, but my Tinyhawk 2 doesn't flip over right away. I have to hold the sticks for a few seconds for it to flip! Is this normal for the Tinyhawk 2 or should I just not try anymore? I don't want to burn anything up.

i got turtle mode on a aux switch but when i arm it when its upside down and activate turtle mode all the motors turn on just like a normal arm any tips please thanks
