Tusk Pilot Pannier Bags | Affordable ADV Luggage | KLR 650 Gear Review | Island ADV
I was shocked at how much stuff you get when you order this luggage set from Tusk. The bags, the racks, and more. Let’s give the Silver Fox a luggage upgrade.

This video is proof that the KLR650 is a great bike to ride, work on and explore the back roads. Awesome 😎

I got the large bottle holders, 2 liter 7up bottles fit perfectly in each one. I carry lots of water in them.

Very cool. I didn't know they had bottle holders larger than these. That's great. I'm always looking to carry more water.

I love the way you open the back door to 1 m of snow and casually pluck a can of drink out of it like that is just normal everyday behaviour 😂🤣😂

It's a time honored tradition out here. Everytime we get a big dump of snow, people are always posting pics of their new organic refrigerators, lol.

I just bought the Tusk racks and soft bags. The instructional video from the manufacture was lacking everything on mounting the soft sides. Your video explained a lot. Thanks for the info eh!
@IslandADV
@IslandADV Год назад
I'm glad it helped. There's probably more than one good way to strap these on too, but this way works great for me. I just spent two days riding hard trail with them fully loaded (rough dirt road, old Creek bed, climbs, and descents). They didn't budge.

Great video! I have the same set up, and bought hard cases too! Love being able to switch out quickly! One suggestion, get the aluminum flat backing plates for the soft bags. Makes it super easy to switch back and forth to hard cases, also you can remove the 2 top straps if not overloading them with too much. I didn’t like that strap across the seat, over time that will mess up the seat covering. The locking hand knob is also a brilliant idea when using hard cases, very secure and hard to walk away with! I too was very impressed with everything you get, and quality is right up there!
@IslandADV
@IslandADV 2 года назад
I think I'll definitely get the back plates this winter. I just got back from a big trip and I really was wanting that quick release system for the bags. But these really held up though. So far I've been camping twice with them and they are great. They held on through some wild trail riding too.

I bought the Pilot bag’s thinking they had a quick detach like the Olympus bags, not so. I’m going to modify my bags and make them quick detachable with some aluminum sheeting on the inside and outside of the bag and attach it to the included quick release bracket that came with my Tusk racks. At least that’s my plan. It’s unknown why they don’t make them quick detachable like the Olympus bags.
@IslandADV
@IslandADV Год назад
That's my biggest/only issue with these bags. They are sturdy, deep, and can take a wipeout for sure, but man they take a long time to get into and to mount. Once I mount the bags, they don't come off, and I usually don't open them up until I get to camp. Tusk does make a quick disconnect plate for them, but that's more money. I'd be very interested to see what you design for a quick connect.

Huge fan of soft luggage, dropped SO many bikes and never had a problem, very aerodynamic too.....with hard luggage you run the risk of damage or tweaking stuff....and it's Always acting as a huge Sail for many bikes, even empty.... But I still love the Looks of hard case better.

It's funny you mention it today. We were out in the woods into the mud and I had the hard case on. Got 100yards into the trail and the Hardcase clipped a downed tree. Spun the KLR right around. Took the hit like a champ though. Luckily no damage.

Great video ! I have a set of Caribou (Pelican type) hard cases but want a soft set alternative as well. Like this system and am thinking .. 🤔. Actually thought that first bottle you had maybe sprung a leak. 😜 Great job, again, and thanks for sharing ! 👍🏽

You know what, I actually bought a really good pelican style hard case from Princess Auto that I'm going to mount on these. The other side will have a big water jerry. Lol about the bottle, it's funny, that's first case of Schooner I've bought in years actually. It went pretty fast. Kept reminding me of Friday nights at Dooly's in Moncton, lol.

Lol. I think your ammo can idea would be a great option. I always thought Ron C’s alice pack idea was kinda cool too. With either of these, or both, and a green hard case as a tail bag and your set ! And some soda pops thrown in for good measure ! 💪🏽

@IslandADV

I saw the pic of your bike there on Insta with the cases. They look really good. Originally when I got the KLR I was going to do ammo cans, but they gave me all the KLR luggage when I bought the bike. After that, I really started liking the soft stuff. But, I've got a plan to create a trail riding build for fox that will include a big pelican case. These racks are just perfect for that.

Have the same setup except the bags. I mounted a 3” pvc pipe on the inside of the left rack for my tools. With a thread on cap and hasp to lock them up with.

@@IslandADV thought about putting a piece of plywood on the inside of the bag and bolting the soft bag to the metal mount. That way I could remove the bag just like a hard bag.
@garyrourke3284
@garyrourke3284 Год назад
Great video….my concern is the bag itself is only water resistant you need the inner dry bags to make it completely waterproof ….have you experienced any water or humidity inside the bags??
@IslandADV
@IslandADV Год назад
Thanks! The bags on their own are not waterproof you're right. But kit in the dry bags is fine in the rain. We rode for almost 2 hours in constant rain this summer, and all the dry bagged kit was dry with no humidity or condensation. I don't mind the dry bags though. I actually like them for storing kit in camp.

Great video mate, well done! I think I am going to go with the Tusk Olympus panniers - simply because I can use the quick release mechanism and take them off in seconds. If you need to dismount them in a hurry - thunderstorm and stow them in a tent or motel room, or to avoid theft, this option can't be beat! The Olympus panniers, combined with the 33litre duffel should be ample storage space and carrying capacity.
@IslandADV
@IslandADV Год назад
I was looking at those quick disconnects. They look great. And that would certainly be my only big issue with these, the time it takes to get them on and off. I'll have to do an update video to this for sure. Lots of things learned after a season riding with these. Cheers.

Well, it looks amazing on the bike, !! I've always preferred soft luggage ... not a fan about hard top, and side cases as they are very dangerous, to you and the bike ! If you watch my videos, you'll see one only bag of 60 L, on the back and I have the commitment not to add much more !! I´m always looking for loosing weight and volume, as the SET is kinda completed ... optimize is the word !! I still have room to go higher, and I´m trying to solve the "fridge" problem, that still goes on my back, LOL ... but I thing I'de prefer to go on those horse shoes soft bags ... the difference is that, they don't have to install and have all those hard frames !! I fall a lot, LOL, and everything in the way is a threat ... but I get the concept, and in your case, it looks amazing and I think it's much better than hard luggage. You did well !!! Wanna see more adventures, LOL. Bring on !!! Cheers

Hey, any wobbling with your panniers? Even high speeds?
@IslandADV
@IslandADV 11 месяцев назад
No actually. The way I strap them down in this video keeps them rock solid. I do recommend packing them a bit and then racking them on as you end up getting a tighter mount that way for whatever reason. But we routinely do highway speeds up to 120 km/h without issue.
