In this Airsoft [TUTORIAL] we learn how to perfectly shim your AEG Gears with the best method available, the "Bevel-To-Pinion", with an easy step-by-step procedure.
Drastically improve your AEG sound, battery consumption, overall Gears' smoothness and performances!
EXTRA NOTES:
BEARING: When reducing up-and-down play with Bearing, please try to obtain al least 0.3mm as specified in the [TUTORIAL], but if you feel so, try reducing the play a little more. What you're aiming for is the least amount of up-and-down play of the Gears with Bearings spinning freely alongside them.
When reducing the up-and-down to less than 0.3mm with Bearing, it's mandatory that you test the Bearings' rotation alongside the spinning of the Gears with both Gearbox's Shells closed and screwed in tight.
CUT-OFF/PISTON MATCHING: When you're done shimming, before closing the Gearbox, there's one more test you can make. Check if the Sector Gear interferes with the Cut-Off lever and matches well with the Piston's teeth, if not, try readjusting the Sector height accordingly at the best of your ability, you might need to re-set the Spur height in order to keep enough contact with the Sector, but try to preserve the Bevel position. It is best to have less contact between the Gears than altering the Bevel-To-Pinion match.
SAME BRAND OF GEARS/PINION: If possibile try to work with Gears and Pinion of the same brand, that will ensure you best compatibility and results.

Just did this with my gearbox, man is it perfect. This tutorial is amazing. I followed you step by step, obviously not same shims, but followed everything and now my gearbox is smooth as butter. No gears running, bevel and pinion are perfect- little bit of play side to side. Great, great tutorial my friend! Subbed for sure

Thank you for this very useful vid. I reshipped my v3 G36 gearbox as part of an upgrade. Tbh I was nervous as hell. I ended up enjoying it and getting (hopefully) best gear engagement and no rubbing. Took a while but worth it. If you can strip a gearbox you have the skills to shim it so go ahead. If you get it wrong start again. You'll get it right! Fwiw I kept a basic drawing If the gears and how many shinm fitted top and bottom. I also fitted the top case with strong c clamps for speed of removal to simulate it being bolted down. It prevents and movement in the gear shafts and how many shims required on top. It's well worth doing for best transfer of energy and longevity of the parts. When I shim a v.2 ill be using this as a guide. Again, thanks.

Hi I have a question. When I come to final step of shimming the pinion to bevel, there's a lot of play when I'm testing without the motor grip and motor, I only have the gearbox screwed together however once I put the motor grip and motor in and retest the play it meets the requirements. Is this how the final bevel to pinion test should be done (with the motor grip and motor) in place? Thanks

To bad my mp5k (Galaxy G. 5) doesn't have a lose grip which makes it a lot harder to shim properly. (Grip is part of the lower receiver so you can't check pinion to bevel gear) Perhaps you have tips for those as well and you could do a shim video for those aeg's. Would be so much appreciated. Thanks bro.

if you want to get the bevel to pinion shim estimator nearly exact...look at the amount of shaft that is sticking out once you adjust motor height..put your shims right up next to it and it should be nearly exact.

Thanks so much for the nice steady easy to follow video! Really appreciate it! Can this method be used to shim an MP5 gearbox? The trouble I have is the pistol grip is also the lower reciever so checking and testing is not possible with the MP5 pistol grip. Could an M4 grip be used to get the bevel set up? Possibly a stupid question as different grips will have different tolerances for motor position I would assume 😉

Thanks Isaac, this is actually what I consider to be an average result, I didn't want so show the best kind because it's often unrealistic to expect those results with stock parts or with parts that doesn't match extremely well. This is a good result but even an average result will give you such better performances because most of the stock gearboxes are very poorly shimmed.

Would like your help! I'm shimming a MP5k and I can't see the bevel and pinion meshing due to the design of the AEG. The lower receiver and pistol grip are a single unit unlike the m4. Do you have any ideas on how I can over come is problem? Great channel watched a number of your videos now all have been very informative and very well produced.

With the sector gear installed and the gearbox shell screwed together there's a lot of resistance when trying to spin the gears. Happens both with the sector gear shimmed per the video, and with no shims at all (just bushings). All gears are in good condition. Bevel and spur gear spin just fine without the sector gear, it's only after installing the sector when nothing wants to spin.

I'll wait until i get my definitive gear set. I've done just for test on the stock gears. The main problem is that is a pain to adjust motor and bevel gear heights considering my masada grip and lower receiver are one single piece.
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
I feel ya! MP5s have the same issue, for the MP5 series I got a spare lower receiver from an old Marui and cut the receiver out, leaving just the hand grip, so I could shim it just as it was an M4. Very useful but of course you need the spare receiver in order to do that. Otherwise you can use a marker to color the pinion when setting the motor height. Keep setting the height until the ink of the marker disappear, proceed by about half a turn each time, that means that the height is right and you can then begin your shim job! ;-) Hope it helps, take care and have fun!

Thank you, very helpful video - but it seems like the gears are good, but, somewhat noisy [just a little, not like bad grinding], rather than very smooth sounding at 17:10? Sometimes I hear other people's guns on RU-vid and there's almost no gear or motor noise, just the slap of the piston on the cylinder head?
@Docv400
@Docv400 5 лет назад
You don't need any Shims on the Left-Hand (small) end of the Bevel Gear. The Motor Pinion Gear keeps the Bevel Gear in position against the Shims on the right, so it can't physically move to the left at all.

Hi! First of all I would just like to thank you for these tech tutorials, they're some of the best and easiest to follow I've seen. Second I have a question. So I've got a golden eagle m4 that right now is stock. I'm getting an shs high torque and a lipo for it, but I would also like to shim it for even better trigger response in combination with the other upgrade parts. Are the golden eagle/jg gears decent quality, or would shimming be pointless because the gears are bad? Thanks again!
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 8 лет назад
+MST Airsoft Hi MTS Airsoft, it's great to hear you like my tech tutorials! Shimming is never pointless, actually I would says is the first thing to do with every gearbox no matter what, sure Golden Eagle/Jing Gong gears are probably among the worst on the market, with little money you could buy SHS gears (13:1 are great to obtain better trigger response) and improve a lot your internals.
@team_omerta

Great tutorial! just wonder why the gear noise is reduced significantly when u reassemble the gearbox at the end of the video comparing to the one minute test. did u fine tune the shimming work? or is it normal when the piston and cylinder installed as well? Many thanks
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
Thanks khsoust, yes consider that the spring load will add significant stress to the cycle, which will be obviously louder when the whole mechanism's running. This Tutorial shows an average result, I didn't want to show the absolute best because there are many factor which comes into play when shimming a gearbox therefore not everyone will obtain the "perfect" sound but everyone can achieve massive improvements nonetheless.

I am now done shimming but have a question: In the last part when I attach the grip, motor and wiring harness, do I need to apply lubrication to test the smoothness of gears operation? I have shimmed the gearbox according to your steps; I am using Li-Po, 11.1V also having mosfet installed. When I am firing on auto I am getting like 8.6V and 26A-30A (I am using a volt-ampermeter)...I need to clarify that I did not had the spring installed in the gearbox when I did the test, only the motor with the gears and everything else but the spring. Is it a good current 26-30A?
@ChrisBusinsky
@ChrisBusinsky 7 лет назад
I always follow your guide and I must have watched it a good 30 times. Few times before each shim job. Weird thing happened to me yesterday. I"m running 13:1 SHS gears, 16awg wiring, 22tpa ZCI motor and 1800mah, 20C 11.1 lipo. My motor is brand new and it just stopped working. It didn't really get hot, didn't smoke, nothing looks burnt on it and it still turns by hand. When I connect another motor it works fine outside of the gearbox. I think my shim job was pretty on point, sounded good. The motor is definitely dead, but can you think of anything that might have caused that? Is it possible that it didn't have anything to do with my shim job or setup? Really frustrated that I have to buy another motor (so is my wife).
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
Hi Chris! Thanks a lot, my girlfriend gets frustrated as well when I'm all over my gearboxes so I fell you there! :-) Hard to tell without actually seeing it but I don't think it was caused by your shim job, first thing to do is check the springs on both sides of the endbell, check if they're well placed and they touch the copper that goes on the brushes. Look for any possibile damage to the connector plates, sometimes they bend too much and break, I wish I could be more specific, when something's wrong with my motor I usually take them apart and check the insides, it really isn't that difficult but takes a bit of practice. Hope you sort it out man! Let me know how it goes!
@ChrisBusinsky
@ChrisBusinsky 7 лет назад
Really appreciate the response. Thanks for the info. I'm not home now, but I'll check those things. Let me ask you this. Previously I had a matrix high torque motor and wanted to upgrade. Idon't think I mentioned that I have a Gate NanoAAB (active breaking fet). I don't have the option to turn that feature off, but do you think that could have caused the motor to burn up so quick? ZCI isn't the most high quality motor, but if I replace it with something higher quality (I was looking at the 22tpa ASG High Torque) I don't want the same thing to happen. I also really don't want to buy another fet when this one works.
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
Nah man, I don't think so, motors aren't that easy to break all of a sudden it should at least do some spinning, noise, even smoke or something. I'm not a fan of mosfets or ABs but usually they are the first thing to break if something goes apeshit, I'd recheck that the motor has everything in place, it might be just a broken connector or damaged brushes.

@Maekiii

Nice tutorial. One thing to notice though is that "not all pinions are created equal", by that I mean some have thinner teeth than others. That means you need to leave more play with the ones that have thinner teeth for proper meshing. For some combinations I'm leaving a lot more play between the pinion and the bevel than you do here for proper meshing.
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 8 лет назад
+Maekiii Yes, there are many variables indeed with this method. Each configurations has it's own story, that's why is very important to learn the basics, why and how this method works, when you realize that your aim is to eliminate any kind of resistances and how to get it done, then you're good to make subjectives decision in order to get even better results out of your shim job. By following the "rules" you're definitively getting a huge improvement in any case, if the components have great compatibility, that's all you need to get one step further. If components are not matching very well, then patience and experience plays a huge role in achieving the best result.

amazine sound!! Is there any good way to shimming vfc 416 with original stock grip? My vfc 416`s sound is really terrible because of bad quality of vfc stock 416 grip.
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
Thanks Chris, this is actually what I consider an average result, which anyone can obtain with a bit of practice and average parts. The best results often need good parts and proper compatibility with each other, for example it's gonna be hard to achieve the perfect shimming with the VFC HK416 Battle Grip, it just doesn't keep the motor straight and the pinion always exerts an uneven pressure on the bevel gear, it sucks but it is what it is, I wasted lots of time on it and it's pretty much the same with Magpul grips. If you like the old VFC HK416 grip that's much better and I had great success with it on achieving flawless shimming.
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
Hi Chris, sounds a bit tight did you check proper bevel to pinion alignment? Some motor grips do not reveal the correct alignment when installed directly to the gearbox and you should try to install the lower receiver as well if that's the case, that might reveal the real placement of the pinion, obviously it'll be much harder to evaluate and some people even drill a hole through the lower receiver and gearbox shell to see the 100% correct alignment, that's drastic though. If you're sure you did everything right you might try re-checking the bevel to pinion alignment with the lower receiver on.

Hey Chupacarba Following the instructions on 6:20, Whenever i turn the gear, I find spots where the bevel gear is pretty loose (about .20mm to .30mm up and down). Turn it again, the gear becomes tight again (>.15mm) Is there anyway to combat this? Thanks for your time!
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
Hi danny! You should basically stop when the gears spin at their best, especially with bearings that might be with a slight higher gap than usual, always check with all the gears installed as well it's about getting the best result when all the gears are running simultaneously

Chupacabra Outdoor I only have this problem with the bevel gear. All the other gears are perfect but when I screw the Gearbox together and install the grip and motor and turn the bevel gear is when I have this issue. Currently my bevel is at .53 mm shims on top and when I turn the gear it's either way too loose or too tight

Hello! Love your videos! If my gun doesn't have a removable grip but its part of the whole lower body, how should I go around shimming my gun properly?

Hi Ben, actually the really best thing to do would be having a spare lower receiver and cut the body part leaving just the hand grip. Obviously not the cheapest way. What you can do otherwise is use a marker and color the bevel, you want a water marker so that the ink is easily removed. Then just with the bevel, trigger and wirings on install lower receiver and motor, plug a battery and make the gearbox run a bit, take off the lower receiver, open the gearbox, check how much color went away, maybe use a 0.2mm shim on the top of the bevel (flat part) just to make sure there's enought contact. This is a tedious procedure, you want the color to go away exactly where the pinion should match the bevel, then once you got the proper height shim the bevel and check the play with a long screwdriver from the cylinder opening of the gearbox, again not very easy. You could also drill a hole both in gearbox and lower receiver to make thing far easier, but it all depends if you're willing to do so. I hope I made myself clear enough, I could do an extensive tutorial about it as soon as someone gives me and MP5 or a Masada to tech or repair, which is not very often unfortunately.

Great video! But I need help. I kinda have trouble shimming my gearbox because the bearings are loose.. Meaning if you take apart the gearbox the bearings would either be on the axle on the gears or falls out of the gearbox shell. Please help me.

glue em.. with normal superglue.. if you ever want to change them, just heat it with a lighter.. it falls right out.. also change to bushings if its under 7mm bearings.

ciao, bellissimo video e molto istruttivo. Una cosa non ho capito: il rodaggio degli ingranaggi lo fai a secco o dopo l'ingrassaggio?
@ObamaTookMyCat

Dopo aver Shim, si vuole ri grasso tutti gli ingranaggi. Ma probabilmente non così tanto che poi rallenta il loro movimento. Ho dovuto tradurre questo! hehe

hi, great tutorial mate, I would like to ask, I never shimmed before and my v3 needs it. the problem is that The bevel gear is on 7 mm bearings while the other 2 gears are on 7mm bushings. I got told bearing are more delicate to shim. how should I proceed? Thank you again
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
Hi Doc. Volt! Yes they are mole delicate, check out the extra notes in the description for some suggestions on how to threat bearings! Basically you must ensure the proper spinning of the bearings as well as free spinning of the gears, without going too tight risking to add pressure on those delicate bearings. Always aim for least amount of play with free spinning of gears/bearings, but be more careful and always tend to prefer a bit more play on the axis than excessive pressure on the bearings. Let me know if you need further assistance, I'll gladly help! ;-)

I think the several times I have done this and gotten seriously saddening results from still gear whine is because no one ever mentioned that you want to have a little bit of play. I would always shim till .05mm of freezing up, but if it has .1mm of play it might drastically reduce the noise of the shims to bushings.
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 8 лет назад
+geekometer96 Hi geekometer96, unfortunately there's no "golden rule" when it comes to shimming airsoft gears, the noise isn't always the best evaluation parameter either. Misaligned motor grips, whiny motors and other detrimental factors might produce some degree of noise even in the most well shimmed gearbox. In the end, tech's ability and experience is always the secret ingredient for perfect shim jobs, you said it yourself, you need that experience to understand how to practically make the best out of your work despite what everyone tells you. In your particular case, I certainly agree, there's one particular reason that most techs don't consider: when closing the gearbox with all its components inside, tightening its screws and installing the motor grip the gearbox shells will inevitably tighten the gears up more so than when you tested the gears' play with just some parts inside the gearbox, maybe even without the motor grip. This is why you need that 0.05mm more of play in MOST but not every case, so a good starting point is leaving the tiniest bit more of play than the very minimal. I hope I was clear enough, don't hesitate to write me if you need more help and enjoy your techings! ;-)

Yup, M120 is a strong enough spring under that you might have some issues on the piston cycle. Bevel to pinion and AOE should be done no matter what IMO though.

It should work up to for at least 20.000 BBs as every spare part you have put is hi quality. That being said, the exception to this would be the ETU from G&G which broke on my RK 74 at the first chrono I tried to do (didn't even get 200 BBs with it)..

i have a problem, my bevel gear has to be shimmed so high that i cant fit a shim on the other side of the gear without it stopping it from spinning freely when i assemble both gearbox shells.... can i run the gun without a shim on the other side of the bevel gear? I have 8mm ball bearings
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
Yup, sometimes it's necessary but it's always best to have at least a 0.1mm shim. With bushings you could file the top until you get completely flat alignment with the gearbox shells, doing so you could get enough space for at least one shim, not with bearings but for sure try without any shims on that part, lube properly and check for eventual grinding. I think I had the same issue with my M249.

Just shimmed my other v2 gearbox the other day. I have the following problems after I shimmed them correctly (I think so? lol): 1. Some bushines are spinning 2. My Spur gear hits the AR latch? would love to hear your advice on this.
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR
@CHUPACABRAOUTDOOR 7 лет назад
Hi Kaizler, you should glue the bushings to the receiving holes. About the AR latch, it's very unlikely that the spur touches it, the AR latch should always be in contact with the bevel and bevel only towards the bottom part of the gearbox. Are you sure you placed it correctly? Send me a pic on Facebook if you wish.
@KaiCheen
@KaiCheen 7 лет назад
I just glued them in with a metal superglue, do you suggest using metal epoxy instead? as for the spur hitting the AR latch, in the end I found out that it the problem was the AR latch all along. It was to fat that its hitting the spur. Now fixed with an extra AR. Thank you!

Ciao.
