Ground Control RC [ Tutorial Series ]
[ Tutorial - Charging a 1S LIPO with a Hobby-Grade Charger ]
Someone posed a question to me asking how to charge a 1S LIPO on a Hobby-Grade Charger, specifically the SkyRC D100 Charger.
That's a very good question and with so many options on these Hobby-Grade chargers it can be a bit confusing.
So, I thought I'd make a short tutorial on how I charge my 1S LIPOs with this charger.
The hardest part is getting the proper battery connector setup on the charger.
Here we go....
Build, Fly, Crash, Repair, Rinse & Repeat!

How about charging 5 batteries at the same time. How does the charger knows which battery is full. Or does it constanly charge until all batteries are full.
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 5 лет назад
That's a very good question. I think if you have a parallel charging board so each battery is monitored individually to make sure each one is fully charged that would be the way to go. I don't have such a board. I know there are many people that will charge several 1S LIPOs at a time using one of those multi-connector cables and I've use them in the past, however, it seemed not all the batteries were getting their full charge. So I typically charge (2) at time since my charger has (2) independent charging ports. Here is a link to a Parallel Charging Board for 1S LIPOs that has Over-Charge Protection, and USB power output, Supports LIHV as well and has many positive reviews: www.banggood.com/6-In-1-3-7V-1S-Lipo-LiHv-Battery-Charger-Board-For-Inductrix-3-7V-KINGKONG-Tiny-6-7-Eachine-QX65-p-1170998.html?p=WE081047791920140372

Hi. Great video. Just to make sure. How do you calculate the correct Amperage to set in the charger? Example I have a 1S (High voltage) 450mah 3.8v battery for my Emax Tinyhawk. Been charging with my Tenergy charger at 0.4A. Is this good and what about the High Voltage factor of this particular battery. Also should I be charging on ‘Balance’ or just regular ‘Charge”? Thank you you for your help. -DS
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 4 года назад
Very good questions Dave! I think you have the charge rate just right. I typically charge my LIPOs at 1C charge rate, which with your 1S 450mah LIPO would be .45 amps. So charging the LIPO at .4 amps is exactly what I would do. Some LIPOs have a 5C charge rate which would be 5 x the 1C rate or 2.2 amps for your LIPO. I baby my LIPOs so they last longer and rarely charge above 2C and only then if I'm in a big hurry and the LIPO is rated for a 2C charge. You would charge an LIHV at the same rate as it just has a higher voltage capacity of 4.35v per cell rather than the standard 4.2v per cell and so takes a bit longer to charge at the same C-Rate. As for charging a 1S on Balance or Charge if your charger doesn't complain you can use either one as there is no balance cable and will not be connected to the balance port. My charger will allow me to charge a 1S LIPO on the Balance setting if I previously balance charge a 2S or higher. For some reason, if I then leave it on balance and change the voltage for a 1S LIPO it doesn't complain. If I had it on charge and then changed it to balance it will throw any error because it can't detect more then 1 cell. An oversight on the firmware I suppose ;-) See you in the Air!

@@davesilva9174 , well, I've never had a multi-port 1S ONLY charger before and I really like my SkyRC Chargers but they are much more expensive. The charger you mentioned is very inexpensive and has (6) ports and has very good reviews. The only downside I saw was a complaint that it has no discharge feature for putting the LIPOs at storage level. Other than that it looks pretty nice ;-) I don't know if you're located in the US but it only comes with an EU Plug so you may need an adapter.

Hi thank your video. Question: How do I figure out my charging amp rate like you did? (you chose the 0.2A on your charger. (Thank you in advance) I have an E-flite 1S 25C LiPo Battery Pack (3.7V/500mAh) w/JST Connector Maximum Continuous Discharge: 25C Maximum Continuous Current: 12.5A
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 3 года назад
Hi Greg! That is a good question. LIPOs have (2) Rates: A Discharge Rate & A Charge Rate. You correctly specified your LIPO's Discharge Rate. The LIPO has a capacity of 500mah or .5 Amp Hours. It has a Discharge Rate of 25C which is based on Amp Hours. .5 Amp Hours x 25C = 12.5 Amps Discharge Rate. Many LIPOs have a Charge Rate of ONLY 1C. If I have a 1S 1000mah 25C LIPO with a 1C Charge Rate I should be able to Charge at 1 Amp as 1000mah = 1 Amp Hour. If the the same LIPO has a Charge Rate of 5C I should be able to Charge at 5 times that Rate or at 5 Amps. My Charger ONLY allows me to Charge at a resolution of Tenths of an Amp. So, if I have a 1S LIPO that has a capacity of 240mah and is capable of Charging at a Rate of 1C I Round Down. So, since I can't Charge at .24 Amps I Round Down to .2 Amps as my Charge Rate. If I Round Up I'm over the 1C Charge Rate. I hope that Helps and I'll see you in the Air!

@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 3 года назад
Hi Kevin! I could only assume they are not getting fully charged. I would check them with a battery meter or multi-meter. These LIPOs are small, I would also try charging them at less than 1C and see if that makes a difference. Say charge at .2 amps. It could be the LIPOs just can't hold a charge anymore. I hope that helps.

I just got back into the 1s battery game with a new micro airplane. I haven't used these types of batteries in a very long time. How does the charger know when to terminate the charge if it can't measure the actual battery voltage because there's no connection/input to the balance port since there's no balance lead? I understand that it doesn't need to see individual cells because, duh, it's a 1s battery. But, I'd think it still needs to see the battery voltage so it doesn't just keep charging, charging, charging and eventually puff the battery or worse. Thanks.
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 3 года назад
If its a standard 1S LIPO you would set the Charger for "Charge" and select "1S" for the type of LIPO and it will terminate the charge when the voltage gets to 4.2v. If it's a 1S LIHV LIPO you would select "Charge" and "1S LIHV" and it will terminate the charge when the voltage gets to 4.35v It will test the voltage using the power leads the same way a battery meter would test the voltage. So it knows when the LIPO has reached full charge. I hope that helps.

@@GroundControlRC I still don't see how the charger is detecting the battery's voltage without an input from the balance circuit side. What about with parallel charging multiple 1s batteries?
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 3 года назад
@@whoknows8678 It's like taking a multimeter and checking the LIPO voltage. The Charger can Charge and Test at the same time. I don't have a parallel charging board but it would have a circuit built-in that monitors the LIPO Voltage on each port the same way and stops supplying voltage to the LIPO once the charge is complete.

@@thesixtorontotoronto2495 , I have not used the 4in1 chargers before. I have used those cheap little single LIPO USB Chargers before and I don't trust them at all, however, I have a couple of good quality Balance Chargers, namely, the SkyRC D100 V1 & V2. They are a bit expensive but I can charge anything from a 1S to a 6S including LIHV. I know the iMax B6 Chargers are very popular and much less expensive. You will most likely need the adapter cables for LOSI connectors as not many come with those cables. The other thing to consider when looking at more expensive chargers is; do they come with a power supply or do you need to purchase that separately? Many do not come with power supplies. Another way to look at is, 1S LIPOs are very inexpensive, so for the price, I would definitely try one of the 4in1 chargers as they are probably the least expensive options for just charging 1S LIPOs. I hope that helps.

Nice presentation, wanted to throw in my two cents, not trying to be a know-it-all, or rude, it's just that I recently had a problem finding connector for an older quad, and ended up going down quite the rabbit hole of connector types and the mass amounts of misinformation mostly due to vendors. There are 10 different JST (Japanese solderless terminal) families, each has many subcategories, the red connector everyone calls JST is a JST RCY. The connector you referred to as Losi is a Molex 51005/51006. Losi is RC truck maker and originally designed these for their trucks. The name is known in some areas of hobby and country other places they've never heard the term. Almost all the small white connectors out there and definitely in RC hobby, technically are either JST or Molex-(PicoBlade) type connectors. Here's a few links that helped me figure some of it out. hackaday.com/2017/12/27/jst-is-not-a-connector/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JST_connector micronwings.com/Products/SectionConnectors/index.shtml Also, that is an awesome charger, friend has one, and mine is very similar. As you know, you can use DC to power that charger, which until a couple months ago I thought was just an option, you may already know this too, but it actually charges batteries quicker and more efficiently balances them using DC power. It's not that big of deal with the 1s, but for your larger multi cell batteries it's a big difference. To the point I actually purchased a DC power unit for my charger instead of using a large mah battery. On a 4s 1300mah battery, it probably knocks 10-15min. off the charge time, and each cell is rarely off more than 0.002v. Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there, take care, happy flying!
@GroundControlRC
@GroundControlRC 4 года назад
Thank you, and no worries! Yep, connectors are confusing and I know the Red JST Connector is not the full nomenclature but sometimes you have to keep it simple. So I use the same label as the vendor to describe the connector so others will be able to find it. Then there's micro servo connectors. You not only have to know the connector but you also need to know the pitch because it just wasn't confusing enough ;-) Sometimes the connector I referred to as a LOSI connector is also referred to as a Walkera connector ;-) I hear people all the time refer to quadcopters as Drones? Now everything is a Drone? I understand where you're coming from and I appreciate the links you provided. I will have to, perhaps, in another episode of the Pilot's Lounge provide those links to viewers so they will have access to this information. I created a video just to go through some of the issues I was having finding Micro Servos with the proper connector ;-) The charger is great and if you use DC rather than AC the power goes from 100watts to 200watts ;-) Thanks for the info as it is much appreciated and I'll have to pass it along. The sound reproduction (The info is great but some how I could not get the "mike" sound up on the PC or Macs. Do not know why. Wonder if anyone else can fill me in. Good info.

@@ronaldbarrett350 Hi Ronald! Thank you much! Yes, I wish I had better equipment to use in those older videos. I think the audio as well as the video is much improved now over previous videos. I'm hoping in 2022 I can upgrade the camera again. I've gotten a little bit better with practice on the audio volume etc. Sorry the sound was poor quality. See you in the Air!
